52.07 Entrepreneurial and Small Business Operations · SOC 11-1021
⚠⚠⚠ Half of new US businesses are gone in five years and two-thirds in ten — BLS tracks it, and the rate barely moves between cohorts: 79.6% survive year one, 50.2% survive five, 34.7% survive ten. ⚠⚠ Every entrepreneurship page should open with that and almost none does. ⚠ Florida's own answer is a cheap certificate rather than a degree: 86% of the 2,102 credentials in this field are certificates of under a year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks every private-sector establishment from its opening. For the cohort that opened in March 2015:
| Still operating after | Share surviving |
|---|---|
| 1 year | 79.6% |
| ⚠⚠ 5 years | ⚠⚠ 50.2% |
| ⚠⚠⚠ 10 years | ⚠⚠⚠ 34.7% |
⚠⚠⚠ Half are gone in five years. Two-thirds in ten. And BLS notes that survival follows a similar path regardless of birth year — so this is not the residue of one bad decade, it is the ordinary shape of the thing.
⚠ The first year is the steepest single drop, costing about twenty percentage points. After that the decline is gradual and relentless.
⚠⚠ This is not an argument against starting a business. A third of them last a decade, which is a great many businesses, and the ones that last make their owners independent in a way employment does not. It is an argument for going in with the real number rather than the one on the brochure — and for treating the plan that gets you to year five as the plan that matters.
The federal occupational system has no code for it, because it describes who owns the business rather than what anyone does all day. The closest proxy is general and operations managers:
| General and operations managers (11-1021) | |
|---|---|
| 2025 median | $105,770 |
| Employed (2024) | ✅✅ 3,712,900 |
| Annual openings | ✅ 308,700 |
| Growth 2024–34 | average (3–4%) |
| ⚠ Entry | ⚠⚠ 29% high school, 27% bachelor's, 22% some college |
⚠⚠ 3.7 million jobs is the largest occupation on this site by a wide margin, with 308,700 openings a year, and only 27% of employers report requiring a bachelor's. Running things is a job you can reach from almost anywhere.
⚠⚠⚠ But read the median honestly: $105,770 is what running a business pays as an EMPLOYEE. Owner income is whatever is left after everyone else is paid, and in a business that does not survive it is negative. The two are not the same number and this page will not pretend they are.
| Code | FL public institutions | Credentials | Short certificates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrepreneurship (52.0701) | 28 | 1,425 | ⚠ 1,171 |
| Small Business Management (52.0703) | 20 | 677 | ⚠ 640 |
| ⚠⚠⚠ 2,102 credentials, 1,811 of them certificates of under a year — 86%. Just 144 bachelor's and 110 master's in the whole state system. |
⚠⚠ That shape is defensible and worth defending. A cheap certificate taken alongside a job, or while a business is actually starting, is a sensible purchase. A four-year entrepreneurship degree is a large opportunity cost for someone whose plan is to start something — and the credential persuades no customer, no landlord and no lender.
⚠ Where it is taught is the same story: Valencia College awards 514 across the two codes, Broward 338, Seminole State 305. These are state colleges, near where people live, at state-college prices.
Nothing on this page is licensed. Almost everything you might start is.
⚠⚠⚠ People get this backwards constantly: they study entrepreneurship and then meet the regulator. Find out what your specific business is required to hold before you study anything general — and note that this site has pages for many of those trades with the licence spelled out.
| Pair | Carriers | Overlap |
|---|---|---|
ENT1000 vs ENT2000 — both Introduction to Entrepreneurship | 11 and 7 | ⚠ none |
SBM2000 vs SBM1000 — both Small Business Management | 14 and 3 | ⚠ none |
ENT3003 vs ENT3004 | 5 and 5 | ✅ USF carries both |
⚠⚠ The first two pairs are one subject under two numbers with no institution carrying both — a transfer-matching problem rather than a credit one, because all four numbers are lower division. Send the syllabus.
✅ The third pair is different, and the difference is instructive: USF carries both ENT3003 and ENT3004, which is good evidence they are genuinely different courses rather than one subject filed twice. When one institution runs both numbers and distinguishes them, that settles it.
⚠⚠⚠ Plan for year five, not year one. 79.6% make it through the first year; 50.2% through the fifth. The businesses that fail mostly do not fail at the opening, they fail slowly — so the question to answer before starting is what the business looks like in year three, not on day one.
⚠⚠ Take the certificate, not the degree — unless you want the degree for its own sake. 86% of Florida's credentials in this field are short certificates and that is the sensible purchase. If you want a business degree, take general business and add the entrepreneurship certificate.
⚠⚠⚠ Find your industry's licence first. Food, child care, contracting, cosmetology, real estate — the operating requirement outranks anything on this page, and discovering it late is expensive.
⚠ Learn accounting properly. It is carried at 32 Florida institutions against entrepreneurship's 28, it costs the same, and it is the skill that most reliably distinguishes the third of businesses that reach ten years.
And consider working in the industry first. The general and operations manager occupation is 3.7 million jobs with 308,700 openings a year and mostly does not require a degree — so being paid to learn how a business in your field actually runs is available, and it is the cheapest education on this page.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, AND RELATED SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 16 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
