52.12 Management Information Systems and Services · SOC 15-1211
⚠⚠⚠ Computer and information systems managers earn $175,140 with 55,600 openings a year — and 26% of them report reaching it with SOME COLLEGE AND NO DEGREE, against 48% with a bachelor's and 14% with a master's. ⚠⚠ The rung below, computer systems analyst, is $105,850 across 521,100 jobs. This is the best-paid management occupation on the site and one of the most credential-loose.
| Role | SOC | 2025 median | Employed | Openings/yr | Growth 2024–34 | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer systems analyst | 15-1211 | $105,850 | 521,100 | 34,200 | ✅ much faster (7%+) | bachelor's, associate or some college |
| ✅✅ Computer and information systems manager | 11-3021 | ✅✅ $175,140 | ✅ 667,100 | ✅ 55,600 | ✅ much faster (7%+) | ⚠⚠ 48% bachelor's, 26% SOME COLLEGE, 14% master's |
⚠⚠⚠ $175,140, and a quarter of the people earning it never finished a degree. That is the highest median of any management occupation on this site and one of the loosest credential profiles on it.
⚠⚠ The honest reading is not “skip the degree”. It is that the degree buys the first interview and delivery buys everything after it — so it is worth paying for at the start of a career and rarely worth paying for later. The 26% did not skip the work; they substituted fifteen years of it.
⚠ And note the scale. 667,100 managers with 55,600 openings a year is a very large management occupation — more people manage information systems in the United States than work as registered nurses in Florida, several times over.

| Typical first role | systems analyst, $105,850 | software developer, $135,980 |
| The rung above | ✅ IT manager, $175,140 — reached from both |
⚠⚠⚠ Computer science pays about $30,000 more at the first rung; MIS points more directly at the rung above. Both routes reach the management job, and plenty of the 26% with no degree reached it from neither.
⚠ The test that actually decides it: do you want to write the code, or decide which code is worth writing? If it is the first, take computer science and do not let anyone tell you MIS is the easier path to the same place — the first rung is $30,000 apart.
⚠⚠ Worth knowing for access: Seminole State College awards 103 MIS bachelor's a year, fourth in the state behind USF, FAU and Florida State. A state college in the top four for a business-technology baccalaureate is unusual, and it means this degree is reachable without a university for students near Sanford.
| Number | Carriers | Sector |
|---|---|---|
ISM3011 Introduction to Information Systems Management | 12 | 7 state colleges, 5 universities |
ISM4011 Introduction to Management Information Systems | 10 | 9 state colleges, 1 university |
| ⚠⚠⚠ Overlap: none. Not one Florida public institution carries both. |
⚠⚠ This is NOT the trap the marketing pages carry. There, MAR2011 is lower division and MAR3023 upper, so the cheaper one cannot supply baccalaureate hours. Here both numbers are upper division, so no credit is lost whichever you take.
⚠ The risk is purely transfer matching: an evaluator comparing ISM3011 against ISM4011 sees two different numbers and may not recognise them as the same course. Send the syllabus, not the number — it is a one-line problem that costs a semester if you leave it to the evaluator.
ISM4323 Information Systems Security is carried by 10 Florida institutions and ISM4324 Cybersecurity Analytics by 6 — inside the business prefix, not the computing one.
⚠⚠ That is the governance and risk half of security: policy, compliance, audit, risk assessment, incident response management. It is a different job from the technical security work on this site's cybersecurity path, it pays comparably, and it is reached from a business degree. If the organisational side of security interests you more than the packet captures, this is the route.
⚠ And the analytical end has already moved: ISM4545 Advanced Machine Learning for Business is carried by six Florida institutions, in the business prefix. MIS is not the non-technical option it was fifteen years ago.
ISM3113 and ISM4113 exist for it at seven and six institutions.ISM4314 is carried by seven institutions, and the PMP is the credential most often named in postings.⚠⚠⚠ Buy the degree at the start, not later. 26% of the people in the $175,140 job have no degree, but essentially all of them substituted a long career for it. If you are 19, the bachelor's is the cheap route; if you are 40 and already in the industry, certifications and delivery are.
⚠⚠ Decide MIS against computer science on what you want to do, not on which is easier. The first rung differs by about $30,000 in computer science's favour; the management rung above is common to both.
⚠ Take systems analysis and project management seriously. They are the two courses that describe the actual job, and they are what distinguishes an analyst from a graduate who can only code a little.
⚠ If you transfer, send the syllabus for your intro course. ISM3011 and ISM4011 are the same subject and no institution carries both, so the receiving evaluator has probably never seen the other one.
And look at Seminole State if a university is not convenient. 103 bachelor's a year puts it fourth in Florida for this degree, at state-college prices.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, AND RELATED SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 15 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
