52.03 Accounting and Related Services · SOC 13-2011
Accountants and auditors prepare, examine and attest to the financial records organisations run and are judged on — statements, tax, controls and the audits that make the numbers credible. ⚠ A median of $83,680 with 124,200 openings a year, one of the largest steady hiring markets on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And the fact that should shape a Florida student's plan: Florida still requires 150 SEMESTER HOURS for a CPA licence while other states have moved, and bills to change it have passed the Florida Senate unanimously TWICE and died in the House both times. This page covers three related roles.
Florida teaches these together and people move up between them, so this page covers the family.
| Role | SOC | 2025 median | Outlook 2025–35 | Usual entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk | 43-3031 | $50,670 | ⚠⚠ −6% decline | some college |
| Tax preparer | 13-2082 | $54,920 | 5–6% growth | ⚠ 38% high school |
| Accountant or auditor | 13-2011 | $83,680 | 5% growth | bachelor's (69%) |
| and above: licensed CPA | 13-2011 | higher, and required to sign audits | — | ⚠ 150 semester hours |
⚠⚠⚠ The clerical tier is being automated away and the professional tier is not. The BLS is explicit: “software innovations have automated many of the tasks performed by bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks”, so “the same amount of work can be done with fewer employees” — 1,532,400 jobs falling by 85,600 over the decade. The same handbook notes clerks are expected to move into “a more analytical and advisory role”, which is a description of the skills that survive rather than a reassurance about the ones that do not.
⚠ It is still a real way in. “With appropriate experience and additional education, some bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks may become accountants or auditors” — and in Florida, 40 public institutions teach the certificate against 13 that teach the degree, so for many students it is what is nearby. Take it as a start, with the degree already planned.
O*NET, on accountants and auditors: prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards; compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payment, reporting, or other tax requirements; develop, implement, modify, and document recordkeeping and accounting systems, making use of current computer technology.
⚠ The demand is unusually steady. 124,200 openings a year against 1,595,200 jobs is a large, predictable hiring market that does not swing with a product cycle the way computing does — every organisation of any size needs this done, and much of it is required by law.
To be licensed as a CPA in Florida you need 150 semester hours — thirty more than a bachelor's degree, for which nobody hands you an extra qualification unless you plan one. It is the single biggest cost and the single biggest deterrent in this career, and it is currently being dismantled across the country: the AICPA and NASBA approved alternatives to the 150-hour rule in May 2025, and state after state has legislated new pathways.
⚠⚠ Florida has tried twice and failed twice, both times in the same way.
| Bill | What it would have done | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| CS/SB 160 (2025) Public Accountancy | revised the education and work-experience requirements for CPA licensure | passed the Senate 39–0 on 19 March 2025; ⚠ “Died in Messages” in the House, 16 June 2025 |
| CS/SB 364 (2026) Public Accountancy | the same reform, refiled | passed the Senate 35–0 on 29 January 2026; ⚠⚠ “Died in Messages” in the House, 13 March 2026 |
⚠⚠⚠ So as this page is written, Florida still requires 150 hours. The proposed alternatives — a master's plus one year of experience, or a bachelor's plus two years — are not law, and the Florida Institute of CPAs has said it intends to refile. Do not plan around a pathway that does not exist, and do not assume advice written for another state applies here.
⚠ What to actually do about it:
If you are starting at a Florida state college, this is the easiest transfer story of any career on this site. The lower-division business core is almost universally carried:
| Course | Carriers |
|---|---|
| ECO 2023 Principles of Microeconomics | ✅ 39 of 39 |
| ECO 2013 Principles of Macroeconomics | 38 — and it carries the (GE CORE) marker |
| ACG 2071 Managerial Accounting | ✅ 37 of 38 carriers of its prefix (97%) |
| ACG 2021 Financial Accounting | 32 |
| BUL 2241 Business Law I | 25 |
| TAX 2000 Personal Income Tax | 22 |
⚠⚠ But the upper division collapses, and that is where the real filter is. Intermediate Accounting — the course accounting students are actually weeded out by — runs as ACG 3101 (7 institutions), ACG 3103 (4) and ACG 3111 (5); auditing as ACG 4632 (7); cost as ACG 3341 (6). None above eight.
⚠ The good news is that this matters less here than elsewhere, because those courses live at the universities and the A.A. transfer protects the lower division you took at the college. The warning is different: intermediate accounting is a step change in difficulty, it arrives immediately after transfer, and students who coasted through the principles courses meet it badly.
⚠⚠ Settle the 150-hour question in year one. It is the decision that determines your cost, your timeline and whether the CPA is available to you at all. And watch the legislature: two unanimous Senate votes suggest the reform will eventually pass, but it has not.
⚠ Take the lower division at a state college with confidence. ACG 2021, ACG 2071, ECO 2013 and ECO 2023 travel better than almost anything on this site — this is the rare path where the money-saving route carries almost no transfer risk.
⚠ Then take intermediate accounting seriously. It is the filter, it comes right after you transfer, and the principles courses do not predict it.
⚠ Do not stop at the bookkeeping certificate. It is a real job at 40 Florida institutions and it is projected to lose 85,600 positions nationally over the decade. Use it to get paid while you finish the degree, not instead of finishing it.
And get the internship. Public accounting recruits early, often in the penultimate year, and a busy-season internship is the usual route into the firms that pay for the fifth year.
There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, AND RELATED SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 16 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before committing to a route.
