52.20 Construction Management · SOC 11-9021
Construction managers plan, price, schedule and deliver building projects — coordinating trades, controlling cost, enforcing code and safety, and answering for the programme. ⚠ A median of $114,990 with 9% growth, on a route with no licence gate at entry — compare architecture at $99,280 after an accredited degree, 3,740 supervised hours and a six-division exam. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding that matters most in Florida: a construction degree is worth THREE YEARS of site experience toward a contractor licence under s. 489.111. This page covers three related roles, and two routes that look alike and end in different places.
| Role | SOC | 2025 median | Jobs | Outlook 2025–35 | Usual entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost estimator | 13-1051 | $78,740 | 226,400 | ⚠ −3% decline | bachelor's |
| First-line supervisor of construction trades | 47-1011 | $79,920 | 921,600 | 5–6% faster | ⚠ 27% certificate, 22% less than high school |
| Construction manager | 11-9021 | $114,990 | 609,100 | ✅ 9% much faster | bachelor's |
⚠⚠⚠ The supervisor and the manager do overlapping work on the same site for a $35,070 difference, and the thing that separates them is a degree. The federal education data for first-line supervisors is striking: 27% postsecondary certificate, 22% less than a high school diploma, 21% high school — this is a job you reach by being good at a trade. The manager role lists a bachelor's and “work experience in a related occupation: none”.
The BLS makes a distinction most people miss. Candidates with a high school diploma and several years of construction experience “may be more likely to work as self-employed general contractors than to be hired as construction managers”, and large firms prefer applicants who combine construction experience with a bachelor's degree.
| The trade route | The degree route | |
|---|---|---|
| Path | trade → foreman → superintendent | degree → assistant PM → project manager |
| Where it lands | ⚠ often self-employed contracting | ⚠ employment by a large firm |
| Florida licence timeline | 4 years, incl. 1 as foreman | ✅ 1 year, on the degree |
| Earnings shape | whatever the business makes | a salary with a ceiling and a floor |
⚠ Neither is better and they are genuinely different careers. The trade route builds equity in a business and carries its risk; the degree route buys a salary and a title at a firm. What you should not do is drift into one while believing you are on the other, which is what happens when someone takes a construction degree expecting to end up running their own crew, or spends eight years on site expecting a corporate project-management job to appear.
O*NET, on construction managers: inspect or review projects to monitor compliance with building and safety codes or other regulations; plan, schedule, or coordinate construction project activities to meet deadlines; direct and supervise construction or related workers; prepare and submit budget estimates, progress reports, or cost tracking reports; confer with supervisory personnel, owners, contractors, or design professionals to discuss and resolve matters.
⚠⚠ Every one of those is about other people's work. A construction manager builds nothing personally and is accountable for everything. The skill is sequencing, negotiating and forecasting — and absorbing the fact that weather, a late delivery and a subcontractor's cashflow are all now your problem.
✅ O*NET and the BLS agree: O*NET gives 550,300 employed, much faster than average (7% or higher) on 2024–34 and 46,800 annual openings; the BLS gives 609,100 jobs, 9% growth on 2025–35 and +55,200. At $114,990 this is the best-paid non-engineering, non-medical path on this site.
If you search Florida for a “construction management” degree by its federal code you will find nothing — no Florida public institution awards under it. The state teaches the subject as construction engineering technology: 16 public institutions, 521 credentials, 305 of them bachelor's degrees, with a master's tier above and associate and certificate routes below. UF 128, FIU 120, Seminole State 71, UNF 58, Valencia 40.
⚠ That placement is a hint about the degree's character. It sits with engineering technology, not with business — statics, materials, mechanical and electrical systems, drawings. Expect more technical content than a management degree implies, and note the practical consequence below.
Florida's contractor statute is unusually explicit about what a degree is worth. Section 489.111(2)(c) accepts:
⚠⚠⚠ So the degree replaces three of the four years. On a full-time basis — the statute counts 2,000 person-hours as a year — that is three years of earnings and three years of life, which is a far more concrete return than most degrees can point to.
⚠ But read the field list. The pathway names engineering, architecture or building construction. A business administration degree is perfectly acceptable to an employer hiring a construction manager and does not satisfy this route — so if a licence is anywhere in your plan, the degree subject matters more than the degree.
Florida carries 334 building construction course numbers across 26 public institutions, and the most widely shared reaches only 9 — about 35%. Compare that with accounting's 97% or economics' 100%. The recognisable spine is thin: BCN 2405 Applied Statics and Strength (9), BCN 1272 Plans Interpretation (8), BCN 1251C Building Construction Drawing (8), BCN 1001 Introduction to Building Construction (7).
⚠⚠ Treat these as one-institution programmes. Take the general education and the mathematics anywhere; take the construction sequence in one place, and if you must move, expect the receiving department to evaluate you course by course rather than by number.
⚠⚠ Decide early whether you want a salary or a business, because it changes the degree. If it is a firm job, a construction or business degree plus internships is the route. If it is your own licence and your own crew, take the construction or engineering degree specifically — it converts to three years of the licence requirement, and business does not.
⚠ Get on a site while studying. This is the path on this site where summer work is most directly convertible: it counts toward the experience requirement, it teaches you what the drawings mean, and it is how the firms recruit.
⚠ Do not aim at cost estimating as a destination. It pays reasonably at $78,740 but it is the one role in this family projected to shrink, by 6,900 jobs over the decade. Estimating is an excellent skill and a narrowing job title — learn it inside a management role.
And take the statics and materials courses seriously. Florida teaches this as engineering technology for a reason: the manager who can tell whether a subcontractor's objection is real is worth much more than one who has to ask.
There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, AND RELATED SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 15 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before committing to a route.
