ACG 2021 Principles of Financial Accounting is the introduction to financial accounting: the system a business uses to record its transactions and report its results to people outside it, such as investors, lenders, regulators and the public. Students learn the accounting cycle and the four financial statements, then work through the major balance-sheet accounts: cash and receivables, inventory, long-term assets, liabilities and stockholders' equity. Most versions end with the statement of cash flows and an introduction to financial statement analysis.
It is one of the most widely taught courses in Florida. 32 public institutions carry ACG 2021, including 11 of the 12 state universities and most of the Florida College System. Three more colleges teach it as ACG 2021C (below). It is the first accounting course in nearly every business degree, and it is a state common prerequisite. A student who wants to enter an accounting, finance, management, marketing or other business bachelor's program at a Florida public university is expected to have completed it, usually with a grade of C or better.
The state's title is Accounting Principles (Condensed) (3 credits). Its description explains the word "condensed": the course "includes all topics found in ACG-001 and ACG-011. ACG-001 + ACG-011 = ACG-021." ACG 2021 compresses what was once a two-semester sequence into one term. ⚠ That is why the course moves fast, and why falling behind in the first three weeks (transaction analysis and adjusting entries) is the most common way students fail it.
⚠ The two-course version still exists at a few colleges as ACG 1001 Principles of Accounting I. ACG 1001 alone is only half of ACG 2021, and Florida SouthWestern gives no credit for both. See the ACG 1001 guide on this site.
Every carrier teaches the same core: the accounting equation, the cycle, the statements and the major accounts. But the catalog descriptions show two distinct ways of teaching it:
| Preparer emphasis | User (decision) emphasis | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Daytona State, St. Johns River (ACG 2021C), Valencia (ACG 2021C), UCF | FIU (Accounting for Decisions), FAU, UF ("conceptual introduction"), FAMU (ACG 2022, "from a user's perspective") |
| What it stresses | Journalising, posting, adjusting, closing and reversing entries; payroll; sole proprietorships as well as corporations. Daytona State's list includes "payroll" and "reversing entries". | Reading and interpreting statements: what the numbers mean for an investor, lender or board. FAU: "investors use these statements in deciding whether to buy or sell stock or bonds, banks use them in lending decisions." |
| Fits | Students heading for accounting careers and A.S. accounting technology programs | Business majors who will use accounting information rather than produce it |
⚠ Both satisfy the common prerequisite, and both prepare you for ACG 2071 Managerial Accounting. If you plan to major in accounting, and your college's version is the user-emphasis kind, practise journal entries beyond what the course requires. Intermediate Accounting (ACG 3101) will assume you can record transactions fluently.
31 of the 32 public carriers teach ACG 2021 at 3 credits. ⚠ The University of Florida teaches it at 4 credits. None publishes contact hours. The guide records 45, the Florida convention for a three-credit lecture course; UF's four-credit version would be about 60.

ACG 2021C Principles of Financial Accounting, the integrated lecture-and-lab form: St. Johns River State, Seminole State and Valencia, all at 3 credits. It has its own guide on this site. It is the same course under Florida's numbering.ACG 2022 Financial Accounting, the state's four-credit version, which "will differ from ACG-021 in the depth of the subject matter covered": Palm Beach State College (4 credits; it does not list ACG 2021) and Florida A&M (3 credits). ⚠ A Palm Beach State student's course is ACG 2022. Confirm with the receiving university that it accepts it as the ACG 2021 common prerequisite.ACG 2021L, a separate lab: Miami Dade runs a 1-credit computerised lab that reinforces ACG 2021 in general-ledger software and Excel. Florida A&M lists a 3-credit ACG 2021L.ACG 1001 Principles of Accounting I, the first half of the old two-course version, which is not a substitute on its own.Because the course number is the same, UF accepts a three-credit ACG 2021 from another Florida public institution as the course. Your transcript carries the 3 credits you earned, not UF's 4. That does not repeat the course, but it can leave you one credit short of a degree's hour total. Ask your UF advisor how it is counted.
The statewide record lists none. Some colleges expect college-level math readiness: Daytona State recommends "appropriate placement scores, successful completion of college prep course or a qualified developmental exemption." ⚠ The arithmetic is simple, but the course assumes you are comfortable with percentages, interest and multi-step problems. If algebra is shaky, take MAT 1033 or MAC 1105 first.
The first accounting course, normally taken in the first or second year, followed by ACG 2071 Managerial Accounting. Together they are the two accounting common prerequisites for business majors, alongside principles of economics (ECO 2013, ECO 2023), statistics and a business-calculus course. Check the Common Prerequisites Manual on FloridaShines for your intended major. Accounting majors then take Intermediate Accounting (ACG 3101), which builds directly on this course.
⚠ This is a cumulative course: each chapter assumes the last. Plan on 6–9 hours a week outside class, mostly working problems. Do the homework when it is assigned rather than before an exam, because the exams test speed and accuracy at recording transactions, not recall.
AI tools explain accounting concepts well and can generate unlimited practice transactions with worked answers. That is a real help in a course where practice is what matters. ⚠ They are less reliable at the course's actual work. A model will produce a confident journal entry that debits the wrong account, or a cash-flow statement that does not reconcile to the balance sheet. The skill being taught is noticing that. Use AI to quiz yourself and to check reasoning after you have done a problem. Do not use it to produce the entries. Most homework platforms randomise numbers, and exams are proctored, so the only route to passing is being able to do it yourself. In practice, accounting software and AI now automate much routine recording, and what employers expect is an accountant who can judge whether the output is right.
