UX Designer and Web Developer

11.08 Computer Software and Media Applications · SOC 15-1255

⚠⚠⚠ Web and digital interface designers earn $104,000 against graphic designers' $62,960 — $41,040 for closely related skill pointed at screens rather than print, and BLS expects one to grow and the other to shrink. ⚠⚠ Florida awards 1,133 credentials in this CIP family and NOT ONE is a bachelor's, while BLS gives a bachelor's as the typical entry. The degree-holders came from somewhere else.

Licensure and accreditation
⚠⚠ NOTHING IS LICENSED, THE PORTFOLIO IS THE CREDENTIAL, AND THE DEGREE IS NOT WHERE YOU THINK IT IS. BLS gives the typical entry-level education for web developers and digital interface designers as a bachelor's degree — but Florida's web and computer graphics CIP family awards 1,133 credentials a year and none of them is a bachelor's. ⚠ 661 are certificates of twelve weeks to a year, 368 are associate degrees, 96 are longer certificates. The bachelor's-holders in this occupation came through computer science, digital arts or digital communication and media. ⚠⚠⚠ BLS'S OWN AI LANGUAGE IS WORTH READING CLOSELY HERE, BECAUSE IT IS MILDER THAN ON THE DESIGN SIDE: "improving web development tools and increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) for web development may soften the employment growth of these workers. These tools may make these workers more productive, and it may also allow some workers in other occupations to do basic web development tasks." ⚠⚠ That is SOFTEN THE GROWTH, on an occupation still projected to grow, against "reduce the need for these workers" on graphic design, which is projected to shrink. ⚠ The second sentence matters as much as the first: basic web work moving to people in other occupations is exactly what has already happened to simple site building, and it is why the defensible position in this field is applications rather than pages. ⚠ 13% of digital interface designers are self-employed, so for a minority this is a freelance business with all that implies.

⚠⚠⚠ $41,040 for pointing the same skill at a screen

RoleSOC2025 medianGrowth 2025–35
✅ Web and digital interface designer15-1255✅ $104,000✅ 5% — faster than average
Web developer15-1254$92,650
⚠ Graphic designer27-1024⚠ $62,960⚠⚠ −2%

⚠⚠⚠ The design skills overlap substantially. The money does not, and neither does the direction of travel. If you are choosing a design education in Florida and the medium is genuinely open to you, this is the most consequential table on the site's creative pages.

The occupation is 132,700 jobs with about 8,000 openings a year, 13% self-employed, and BLS gives the typical entry as a bachelor's degree.

⚠⚠⚠ BLS has three different registers for AI, and they line up

Reading the federal handbook across three occupations this site now covers:

OccupationProjectionWhat BLS says about automation
Medical records specialist✅ +8%automation noted; no dampening claimed
Web developer / digital interface designer✅ +5%AI “may soften the employment growth of these workers”
⚠ Graphic designer⚠⚠ −2%AI “projected to… reduce the need for these workers”

⚠⚠ Those are three deliberately different phrasings from the same agency, and they track how routine the output is. Where the product is a finished artefact that a tool can now generate, the language is “reduce the need”. Where it is a working system someone has to specify, build and maintain, it is “soften the growth”. Where the work is checking, auditing and defending a decision, there is no dampening claim at all.

⚠⚠⚠ That is the most useful thing a student can take from the AI question, and it is more informative than any forecast about the technology: the exposure is to the routine PRODUCTION half of a job, not to the job. Position yourself on the specification and judgement side of whatever you choose.

⚠ And read BLS's second sentence here, which people skip: AI “may also allow some workers in other occupations to do basic web development tasks.” That has already happened to simple site building — which is precisely why the defensible ground is applications rather than pages.

⚠⚠⚠ A CIP family with no bachelor's degree in it

CodeFL public institutionsCredentialsBachelor's
Computer Graphics (11.0803)18855 — 661 short certificates, 194 associate⚠⚠ 0
Web and Multimedia (11.0801)32269 — 173 associate, 96 certificates⚠⚠ 0
Modeling and Simulation (11.0804)290

⚠⚠⚠ 1,133 credentials and not one bachelor's, in an occupation whose typical entry BLS gives as a bachelor's. The graduates holding degrees came through computer science, digital arts or digital communication and media instead.

⚠⚠ Which is not a reason to dismiss the certificates. 32 institutions carry the web and multimedia code and Valencia alone awards 276 computer graphics credentials — these are cheap, local, and in a portfolio field they get you making things. But know what they are: the tier beneath the degree, not the degree.

⚠⚠ The subject has no home prefix either

Measured across the whole Florida course file, 181 distinct active course identifiers carry “web”, “user interface”, “user experience” or “human-computer” in their statewide titles — across 25 DIFFERENT PREFIXES.

⚠⚠⚠ Not one reaches 14 carriers, and the top of the list is clock-hour technical-college training. Set that against HSC0003 at 55 carriers or PSY2012 at 33 — this subject is genuinely homeless in the Florida catalogue.

⚠ The practical consequence: you will assemble this education rather than enrol in it, and transfer credit will be difficult because no two institutions number it the same way. Keep syllabi for everything.

Necessary skills

Advice

⚠⚠⚠ If you are weighing graphic design against interface design, weigh the $41,040 and the direction. $104,000 and growing against $62,960 and shrinking, for closely related skill. That is the clearest single decision in this cluster.

⚠⚠ Get the degree from a computing or digital media programme, not this CIP family. It awards no bachelor's at all in Florida, and BLS says a bachelor's is the typical entry.

⚠ Use the certificates for what they are good at. 32 institutions, cheap, local, and they get you building. CTS0070, CTS0071 and COP2830 are the ones with the widest reach. Stack them under a degree rather than instead of one.

⚠⚠ Learn to build, not just to specify. BLS says AI may let people in other occupations do basic web tasks — that is already true, and the ground it does not reach is real applications.

And keep every syllabus. 181 course numbers across 25 prefixes with no course above 13 carriers means transfer evaluation in this subject is genuinely difficult, and the syllabus is the only thing that travels.

Programs that lead here

A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.

Web and Interactive Design 34 Florida schools
The certificate and associate tier — 34 Florida public institutions, 1,133 credentials, ⚠⚠ and not one bachelor's degree. Valencia 276, Miami Dade 191. Cheap, local and good for building a portfolio; not the degree BLS says the occupation expects.
Computer Science 16 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ Where the bachelor's is. BLS gives a bachelor's as the typical entry for this occupation and the web CIP family awards none, so the degree-holders came through computing. ⚠ It is also the defensible ground against BLS's warning that AI may let others do basic web tasks — the answer is to build applications.
Graphic and Digital Design 41 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The comparison that should change somebody's mind: $104,000 here against $62,960 there, and BLS expects this occupation to grow 5% while graphic design declines 2%. ⚠ Closely related skill, very different market.
Information Technology 39 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The nearest operational neighbour and far more widely taught — 39 Florida institutions. The same CTS clock-hour courses appear in both, and the technical colleges teaching web design teach networking alongside it.

Related, but not a route in

Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.

Instructional Design and Educational Technology 10 Florida schools
⚠ A real destination: EME6405 Educational Web Design is taught at four Florida universities, the field screens on a portfolio the same way, and training and development specialists number 452,300 with 43,900 annual openings and much-faster-than-average growth.

Careers similar to this one

Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCES AND SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Cybersecurity Analyst Computer/Information Technology Administration and Management
Cybersecurity analysts defend an organisation's systems and data — hardening configurations, monitoring for intrusion, responding to incidents, testing defences by attacking them, and investigating breaches after the fact. ⚠ A median of $129,180 and 21% projected growth, the fastest of any computing path on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ And the thing nobody says in the advertising: this is NOT an entry-level field. The federal handbook is explicit that analysts typically arrive from systems administration, and a security credential with no operational experience behind it is the commonest disappointment in this job market. This page covers four related roles.
Database Administrator and Database Architect Computer Software and Media Applications
⚠⚠⚠ One job title and two occupations, moving in opposite directions. Database ADMINISTRATORS earn a $104,620 median and are projected at 0% growth over 2025-35; database ARCHITECTS earn $139,500 and are projected at +9% — with FEWER people and MORE annual openings. ⚠⚠ And Florida has no undergraduate database degree at all: the dedicated code produces 62 credentials a year and 61 are one UWF master's. So the specialism is assembled from courses, under seven competing statewide numbers in three different colleges.
Network and Systems Administrator Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications
Network and systems administrators build and run the infrastructure everything else sits on — switches, routers and wireless, servers and virtualisation, directory services, cloud platforms, backup and monitoring. ⚠ A median of $99,130, reachable from an associate degree, at 56 Florida institutions — the widest computing footprint in the state. ⚠⚠⚠ But read the outlook honestly: this occupation is projected to DECLINE, and so is the support work below it. The growth is in the two rungs above. This page covers the whole ladder and says where to aim.
Software Developer Computer and Information Sciences, General
Software developers design, build and maintain the systems everything else runs on. ⚠ A median of $135,980 nationally and $130,980 in Florida, on a bachelor's degree, and among the highest-paid on this site — above every two-year route and behind only computer hardware engineering. ⚠⚠ It is a CHOICE path: no single major owns it. Counted degrees show computing majors supplying under a third of working developers and ENGINEERING supplying nearly as many. ⚠⚠⚠ And it is the only career here you can enter with no degree at all — about one developer in five has none.

Courses along this path

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.

CTS0085 —Web Security Specialist Request a guide
⚠⚠ Web Security Specialist — 150 clock hours at 13 Florida technical colleges, and the MOST widely carried web course in the state. That the top of the list is clock-hour CTE rather than a degree course is the shape of this field.
⚠ ⚠ Clock hours, not credit. Useful and cheap; it does not articulate into a degree by itself.
CTS0070 —Web Design Foundations Request a guide
Web Design Fundamentals — 150 clock hours at 7 technical colleges. The entry block of the clock-hour route.
CTS0071 —Web Interface Design Request a guide
⚠ Web Interface Design — 150 clock hours at 7 technical colleges. The closest thing Florida's CTE system has to a named UX course.
COP2830 —Web Programming Languages Request a guide
⚠ Basic Web Page Programming — 8 institutions, the most widely carried COLLEGE-CREDIT web course in Florida. HTML, CSS and the foundations everything else assumes.
⚠ ⚠⚠ Florida numbers introductory web work at least four ways — COP2830, CGS2820, CGS1820 and COP2822 — none above 8 carriers. Register by number and keep the syllabus.
CGS2820 —Introduction to Web Design Request a guide
Web Authoring / Introduction to Web Design — 6 institutions. The same ground under a different prefix, which is the recurring problem in this subject.
COP4813 —Web Applications Programming Guide
⚠ Web Applications Programming — 6 institutions and upper division. This is the applications side BLS's warning does not reach, and it is the single most defensible course on this page.
COP2842 —Developing Websites Using Php/Mysql Request a guide
Developing Web Sites Using PHP/MySQL — 4 institutions. Server-side work and databases, which is where page-building becomes application-building.
CEN4721 —Human Computer Interaction Guide
⚠⚠ User Interface Design / Human-Computer Interaction — 4 institutions, upper division. The academic core of UX, and the part that is research rather than decoration.
⚠ ⚠ Also appears as human-computer interaction under the CAP prefix at other institutions. The subject is spread across 25 prefixes statewide.
DIG0083 —Multimedia Web Interactive Designer Request a guide
Multimedia Web Interactive Designer — 300 clock hours at 8 technical colleges, part of the four-block DIG0081–0084 ladder totalling 1,050 hours.
⚠ ⚠ A CTE occupational completion point rather than a college course. It is a job title you can be hired on.
DIG2000 —Introduction to Digital Media Request a guide
Introduction to Digital Media — 8 institutions including UCF. The college-credit bridge between the clock-hour and degree routes.
COP1000 —Introduction to Computer Programming Request a guide
⚠ Introduction to Programming. Named because the whole argument of this page is that building beats specifying — and because BLS explicitly warns that basic web tasks are moving to people in other occupations.
⚠ ⚠ Florida numbers introductory programming several ways (COP1000, COP2000, CGS1540).
PSY2012 —General Psychology Guide
⚠ Introduction to Psychology — 33 institutions. Named deliberately: user research and interaction design rest on how people actually perceive and decide, and this is the cheapest serious grounding available.
STA2023 —Elementary Statistics Guide
Elementary Statistics — 39 institutions. A/B testing, analytics and usability measurement are statistical work, and the designers who can read the numbers win the arguments.
ENC1101 —English Composition I Guide
English Composition I — 39 institutions. Interface copy is design, and a portfolio is a written argument as much as a set of images.
GRA2190C —Traditional and Digital Illustration Request a guide
Traditional and Digital Illustration — 8 institutions. Named because visual craft is still the entry ticket, and it is the part of design least displaced by generative tools.
