11.08 Computer Software and Media Applications · SOC 15-1242
⚠⚠⚠ One job title and two occupations, moving in opposite directions. Database ADMINISTRATORS earn a $104,620 median and are projected at 0% growth over 2025-35; database ARCHITECTS earn $139,500 and are projected at +9% — with FEWER people and MORE annual openings. ⚠⚠ And Florida has no undergraduate database degree at all: the dedicated code produces 62 credentials a year and 61 are one UWF master's. So the specialism is assembled from courses, under seven competing statewide numbers in three different colleges.
The federal handbook covers database administrators and database architects on one page, and then splits them. The split is the most useful thing on this page:
| Role | SOC | Median | Employment | Outlook 2025–35 | Annual openings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Database administrator | 15-1242 | $104,620 | 78,000 | ⚠⚠ 0% — no growth | 3,800 |
| Database architect | 15-1243 | $139,500 | 66,900 | +9% (+6,500 jobs) | 4,000 |
| the two combined | — | $126,760 | 144,500 | +4% | 7,300 |
⚠⚠⚠ Read the last two columns together. There are fewer database architects than administrators — and more architect openings every year. The smaller half of the occupation is hiring harder, paying about $35,000 more, and growing at 9% while the larger half sits flat.
⚠ O*NET, working from the 2024–34 projections, says the same thing in its own words: database administrators “Decline (−1% or lower)”, database architects “Much faster than average (7% or higher).” Two agencies, two projection rounds, same answer — which is not always how this comes out.
So the sentence this page exists to say is: enter through administration if you must, but aim at architecture, and know from day one that they are different jobs.
| Database administrator | Database architect | |
|---|---|---|
| The work | Keeping a running system healthy — performance, backups, recovery, patching, access, uptime | Deciding what the system should BE — the model, the schema, the platform, the migration |
| Measured by | Nothing breaking | What gets built next working |
| Reported education | 89% bachelor’s, 4% post-baccalaureate certificate, 3% associate | 76% bachelor’s, 14% master’s |
| O*NET Job Zone | Both Zone Four — a four-year degree plus several years of experience |
⚠ Neither is an entry-level job. Job Zone Four means people arrive here from somewhere else — support, development, analysis — after several years. Plan the first job as the on-ramp, not the destination.
⚠⚠ The education rows are the actionable difference: the master’s figure is 14% on the architect side and does not appear at all on the administrator side. Design work is where graduate study shows up in this family.
The dedicated federal code for this field, Data Modeling/Warehousing and Database Administration (11.0802), is recorded at five Florida public institutions and produces 62 credentials a year:
| Institution | Level | Credentials |
|---|---|---|
| University of West Florida | Master’s | 61 |
| Hillsborough Community College | Associate | 1 |
| Daytona State, Miami Dade | Associate | ⚠ 0 |
| Florida Polytechnic University | ⚠ Bachelor’s | ⚠ 0 |
⚠⚠⚠ One live programme in the state, and it is a graduate one. An eighteen-year-old cannot enrol in a Florida public bachelor’s in database administration, because there is not one to enrol in.
This is what makes it a choice path rather than a programme path. Nobody hands you this career as a major. You take a computer science, information technology or information systems degree and assemble the database specialism out of courses — which means you have to know which courses, and that turns out to be the hard part.
Measured across the statewide file, the upper-division database course exists under seven Florida numbers spanning 21 public institutions:
| Number | Statewide title | Carriers |
|---|---|---|
COP3703 | Database Concepts | 5 — EFSC, FAMU, St Johns River, Seminole State, UNF |
COP4703 | Database Concepts | 3 — FAU, FIU, USF |
COP3710 | Database Design/Architecture | 4 — FAMU, FGCU, Florida Poly, Polk State |
COP4710 | Database Design/Architecture | 5 — FIU, FSU, UCF, USF, UWF |
ISM3212 | Database Concepts & Administration | 4 — FGCU, Florida Poly, Indian River, Palm Beach State |
ISM4212 | Database Concepts & Administration | 6 — Central Florida, FAU, FSU, State College of Florida, St Petersburg, USF |
CTS4408 | Database Administration | 3 — FIU, Florida SouthWestern, Santa Fe |
⚠⚠⚠ And this is NOT one course filed seven ways. The proof is in the carrier lists: seven institutions carry more than one of the seven, and FIU and USF each carry THREE. An institution running three of them is running three genuinely different courses.
The prefix tells you which college, and the college tells you what the course is about:
| Prefix | College | What the course is | Points toward |
|---|---|---|---|
COP / CAP | Computer science / engineering | The relational model, normalisation, query processing, transactions, physical design | ⚠ Architect — the +9%, $139,500 half |
ISM | Business / information systems | Data as an organisational asset — modelling requirements, reporting, analytics, governance | Analytics, BI, systems analysis |
CTS | Applied computer technology, mostly state colleges | Hands-on platform work — Oracle, SQL Server, installation, tuning, backup | ⚠ Administrator — the 0%-growth half |
⚠⚠ That mapping is the whole strategy of this page. The CTS route is the fastest way into a paid database job in Florida and the slowest way to the half of the occupation that is growing. Take it if you need work soon — and then deliberately go and get the design course.
⚠ Consequence for transfer: SCNS equivalency does not cross numbers, and a receiving programme names its prerequisite by number. A student who took ISM4212 and transfers into a programme that requires COP4710 has done a database course, not the database course. Send the syllabus, and expect to argue the case rather than assume the match.
COP2700 Introduction to Database Management is carried by nine Florida public institutions — Daytona State, Eastern Florida, Florida SouthWestern, Gulf Coast, Indian River, Lake-Sumter, Northwest Florida, Palm Beach State and USF — which makes it the widest entry point in the state. CGS1540 is the same idea at five more.
⚠ Then the certificate tier, which is where Florida’s state colleges are unusually strong: CTS2445 SQL Programming (6 carriers), CTS2433 (6), and the CTS2441/CTS2442 Oracle Database Administration pair (4 each). These are short, vendor-shaped and directly hireable.
⚠⚠ Watch the credits on that tier: the CTS database courses run at 3 credits at some institutions and 4 at others. It is a small thing until you are counting hours against a degree plan.
This site tracks how the federal projections talk about AI, because the wording varies by occupation. Most of the registers this site has recorded are dampening ones. This page carries the other kind:
“As organizations continue to improve their systems and adopt artificial intelligence (AI) to process their data, database architects will be critical to ensuring proper database design, transition, backup, and security.”
⚠⚠⚠ AI adoption is named as a REASON THE ROLE GROWS, not as a reason it shrinks — and it attaches to the architect half, which is the half projected at +9%. The handbook also points at demand for “quality data infrastructure that can support high-tech innovation.”
The logic is not mysterious and it is worth understanding rather than just quoting: every AI system an organisation deploys has to be fed from somewhere, and the feeding is a data-engineering problem — where the data lives, how it is modelled, how it moves, who may see it. More AI means more of that work, not less. Meanwhile the routine half — patching, monitoring, backup verification — is exactly what cloud platforms and automation have been absorbing for a decade, which is the 0%.
⚠ Same conclusion as every other page here, arrived at from the opposite direction: position on the specification and judgement side of the work. Here that side has a name, a separate SOC code and $35,000 attached to it.
| Percentile | Database administrator | Database architect | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Florida | US | Florida | US | |
| 10th | $56,300 | $60,230 | $85,880 | $86,240 |
| 25th | $74,090 | $79,610 | $103,080 | $109,370 |
| Median | $104,120 | $104,620 | $138,320 | $139,500 |
| 75th | $136,240 | $135,460 | $168,500 | $169,290 |
| 90th | $161,090 | $163,320 | ⚠ $206,410 | $204,000 |
⚠⚠⚠ Florida pays essentially the national rate here, and that is unusual on this site. The administrator median is $500 below national and the 75th percentile is above it; the architect 90th percentile is $2,410 above the national figure. Compare three occupations measured the same way: architects −$23,190 at the 90th, interior designers −$17,210, software developers −$10,270.
⚠ The likeliest reason is that this work is priced in a national rather than a local market — it is done remotely as a matter of course, and the employer does not have to be in Florida. That is an argument for Florida students specifically: the ceiling on this career is not lowered by staying here.
CTS; design lives in COP.COP2700 or CGS1540) and find out whether you like the work before committing electives to it.COP4710 or COP3710 — even if your degree does not require it, and add CAP4770 Data Mining or CAP4774 Data Warehousing.CEN4083 and the CTS2145/CTS2375 cloud courses are the Florida route in.There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCES AND SUPPORT SERVICES) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 15 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
