Teacher Education

Teacher education programmes prepare people to be certified classroom teachers — the subject content, how children learn it, how to plan and assess, how to manage a room, and a supervised internship in a real school. Florida structures them around its own certification requirements, so the degree and the licence are designed together rather than sequentially.

The degrees this program covers
Taught at 35 Florida public institutions across the levels-and-methods codes, with 2,282 credentials in the 2023 federal award year, plus 877 in specific subject areas and 936 in special education. UCF is the largest producer in the state at 1,164 across all education codes, then UF 906, FSU 741, FIU 706, UWF 624. ⚠ Elementary education (1,188 credentials at 21 institutions) and early childhood (842 at 31) dominate the volume. ⚠⚠ The important structural point: a Florida teacher preparation programme is built to deliver the STATE CERTIFICATE, not just a degree, so it embeds the required reading, ESOL and exceptional-student-education content and the supervised internship. ⚠⚠⚠ That matters because Florida also permits an ALTERNATIVE route — any bachelor's degree plus a subject-area examination gets you a temporary certificate and a classroom — so the degree competes with a cheaper path. What the degree buys is the preparation, the internship and a professional certificate without the clock running.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Early Childhood Educator
⚠⚠⚠ $24,540 separates a preschool teacher from a kindergarten teacher, and the children are one year apart. Preschool $38,140, kindergarten $62,680 — the difference is not the work, it is which system employs you and which credential you hold. ⚠⚠ Florida sets the minimum for a VPK lead instructor at a Child Development Associate credential, which is not a degree, and its public institutions award 1,017 child care credentials a year of which ZERO are degrees.
Instructional Designer
⚠⚠⚠ One job title, two federal occupations pulling in opposite directions. Instructional coordinator: $77,440, 60% master's, growing 1–2%. Training and development specialist: $69,280, 78% bachelor's, twice the jobs, twice the openings, growing much faster than average. ⚠⚠ And you cannot major in it — Florida's public institutions awarded 978 credentials in this field and SIX were bachelor's degrees.
School Counselor
⚠⚠⚠ A Florida school counsellor carries 432 students. ASCA recommends 250 and the national average is 376 — so Florida runs 56 above the country and 182 above the standard. ⚠⚠ The credential is a Department of EDUCATION certification, not a Department of Health licence, which is the distinction that separates this from mental health counselling even though both mostly come out of the same master's code. ⚠ $64,330 median, 31,000 openings a year.
School Teacher (K–12)
School teachers plan and deliver the curriculum, assess what has been learned, manage a classroom and account for every child's progress. ⚠ This page covers elementary, middle, secondary and special education together, because in Florida they share one certification system and differ mainly by which subject examination you sit. ⚠⚠⚠ And it leads with the finding a Florida student most needs: the state ranks around 19th nationally for STARTING pay and 50th for AVERAGE pay. The salary that recruits you is competitive; the one you reach after fifteen years is not.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Speech-Language Pathologist
⚠ Not a route to the licence, but a real alternative destination and one many people in this field end up in — schools are among the largest employers of speech-language pathologists, and exceptional student education serves the same interest at 35 Florida institutions against 7.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Business Administration and Management 45 Florida schools
⚠ Named because Florida's alternative certification route accepts ANY bachelor's degree plus a subject-area examination, so a business degree can lead to a classroom. ⚠⚠ What it does not give you is the supervised internship or the reading, ESOL and exceptional-student-education preparation Florida requires, which you would then complete while already teaching on a temporary certificate.
Computer Science 16 Florida schools
⚠ Named for the same reason and with a sharper edge: Florida treats mathematics, science and computer science as shortage areas, so a subject degree plus the subject-area examination is a genuinely open door into teaching. ⚠⚠ It is also the door most often taken in the other direction — subject graduates who try teaching and leave, because the pay ceiling in Florida is far below what those degrees earn elsewhere.
Communication Sciences and Disorders 7 Florida schools
⚠ A closer neighbour than it looks, and a genuine alternative destination: a great many speech-language pathologists work in schools, and exceptional student education is where the same interest in children's communication and learning goes if the master's route does not work out. ⚠⚠ Teacher education runs at 35 Florida institutions against 7 here, so it is far more accessible.
Instructional Design and Educational Technology 10 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The commonest feeder by a long way — these programmes sit in colleges of education and are built around teachers moving into design, coaching and curriculum roles. ⚠ EME2040 Introduction to Technology for Educators is carried by 33 Florida public institutions, more than any other course in the prefix, and almost every Florida teaching student takes it.
Child Care and Early Learning 39 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ Where the DEGREE and the state certification live. Early Childhood Education and Teaching is CIP 13.1210 inside teacher education — 31 Florida public institutions, 513 bachelor's and 265 associate degrees a year. ⚠ It is the route to a public-school classroom and to the Prekindergarten/Primary Education (Age 3–Grade 3) certification; a child care certificate is not, and does not automatically articulate into it.
Counseling 8 Florida schools
⚠⚠ Named because the counselling degree lives in the college of education, and school counselling is the branch of it Florida numbers at 13.1101 alongside counselor education generally. ⚠ A school counsellor route runs through certification as well as licensure, which is a different set of requirements from the LMHC.
