Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat disorders of speech, language, voice and swallowing — in children who are not talking, in stroke patients who have lost words, in people who cannot safely swallow. ⚠ A median of $97,870 and 17% growth, among the best combinations on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ But the bachelor's is NOT a terminal degree: Florida awards 513 of them a year into 298 master's places, and 89% of the profession holds a master's. This page covers the assistant, the pathologist and the audiologist, because the bachelor's only reaches the first.
| Role | Entry credential | 2025 median | Jobs | Outlook 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speech-language pathology assistant | ✅ bachelor's + 24 board-specified hours | — | — | — |
| Speech-language pathologist | ⚠ master's + clinical fellowship | $97,870 | 193,400 | ✅✅ 17% much faster |
| Audiologist | ⚠⚠ doctorate (AuD) | $95,780 | 14,200 | ✅ 11% much faster |
✅ The pathologist numbers are among the best on this site — $97,870 with 17% growth and 32,100 new posts over the decade puts it alongside cybersecurity for growth and above it for nothing-else-required stability. O*NET is more conservative on the band (7% or higher) and agrees on direction; the BLS gives the precise 17%.
Florida public institutions award 513 bachelor's degrees a year in this field and offer 298 master's places. The bachelor's does not qualify you to practise as a speech-language pathologist — 89% of the occupation holds a master's and O*NET's respondents do not name a bachelor's at all.
| Institution | Bachelor's | Master's |

| USF | 155 | 61 |
| FSU | 88 | 56 |

⚠⚠ So roughly two bachelor's graduates chase every master's seat in the state, and that is before out-of-state applicants. This is not a reason to avoid the field — it is a reason to treat the undergraduate degree as the first half of a plan rather than as a qualification, and to know the alternative before you need it.
Florida licenses the speech-language pathology ASSISTANT, and a bachelor's reaches it. Under Chapter 468 Part I and Rule 64B20 you need the degree plus at least 24 board-specified semester hours, including 9 hours covering normal human growth and development, psychology and the normal development of speech, hearing and language, with the remainder in phonetics, articulation, language disorders, audiometry, screening, therapy or auditory training.
⚠⚠⚠ Read that coursework list against a communication sciences and disorders degree and you will notice it is essentially already in it. The 513 Florida graduates a year who do not get a master's place are, in most cases, already close to a licensed job in the field they trained for — and a great many of them do not know it.
⚠ An assistant works under a licensed pathologist's supervision, cannot evaluate or diagnose, and earns considerably less. It is a real career and it is also the best possible position from which to reapply, because it is directly relevant experience.
Florida carries 315 course numbers in this prefix across just 8 public institutions — FAMU, FAU, FIU, FSU, Santa Fe, UCF, UF and USF. And of those 315 numbers, only TEN are below the 3000 level — of which nine are special-topics, independent-study, co-operative-education or study-abroad shells. Exactly one is a real lower-division course.
⚠⚠⚠ That is the tightest access constraint on any health path on this site. For nursing, radiography or respiratory therapy a student can do two years at a state college and transfer. Here there is nothing to take. Plan an A.A. in general education and transfer into the major at the third year, and choose the general-education courses that the degree will actually want — psychology, statistics, biology and a language course.
⚠ The prefix is also graduate-weighted: 112 of the 315 numbers are at the 6000 level and another 35 above that, against 26 at 3000 and 54 at 4000. That distribution is the profession telling you where it lives.
O*NET, on speech-language pathologists: evaluate hearing or speech and language test results, barium swallow results, or medical or background information to diagnose and plan treatment; write reports and maintain proper documentation of information, such as client Medicaid or billing records or caseload activities; monitor patients' progress and adjust treatments accordingly; develop or implement treatment plans for problems such as stuttering, delayed language, swallowing disorders; administer hearing or speech and language evaluations, tests, or examinations to patients.
⚠⚠ Note the barium swallow. Dysphagia — disordered swallowing — is a large and growing part of this profession's medical caseload, it carries real risk of aspiration pneumonia, and it is nothing like the speech-therapy-with-children picture most applicants arrive with. The two halves of this career, paediatric language and adult medical, are almost different jobs.
⚠ And the documentation is not incidental — it appears second in O*NET's own task list, because in schools and in hospitals the eligibility determination and the billing record are what fund the therapy.
⚠⚠ Treat the bachelor's as half a plan. Two graduates for every master's seat in Florida means you should be building a master's application from the first year — research experience, clinical observation hours, and relationships with faculty who will write for you.
⚠⚠⚠ Learn the assistant route NOW, not after a rejection. The licensed SLPA is reachable from the degree you are already taking, and checking the board's 24-hour coursework list against your own transcript while you can still choose electives is the single most useful thing on this page.
⚠ Plan the transfer deliberately. There is no lower-division coursework in this subject in Florida, so do an A.A. that loads the sciences and psychology the major will want, and apply to transfer into one of the seven institutions that teach it.
⚠ Consider audiology honestly. It pays comparably at $95,780 and grows at 11%, but Florida produces 18 AuD graduates a year at two institutions. That is the narrowest route on this site, and it is a four-year doctorate.
And observe both halves of the profession before you commit. A school caseload and a hospital dysphagia round are the same licence and different working lives, and almost nobody applies having seen the second.
There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
Careers filed under the same broad field in the federal classification (HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMS) — often they share early coursework, and each row says which group it is filed in. ⚠ Worth reading BEFORE you commit: switching between neighbours is cheap early and expensive late.

Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 13 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
