Medical Laboratory Science

Medical laboratory programmes train the people who actually produce the test results a diagnosis is made from — running and validating assays in haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank, spotting the result that is wrong before it reaches a physician, and keeping the instruments and the quality control honest. It is hospital work with almost no patient contact, and it runs at two levels: a two-year technician degree and a four-year scientist degree.

The degrees this program covers
This programme spans a genuine LADDER, and knowing which rung you are on matters more here than in most fields. The ASSOCIATE degree (medical laboratory TECHNICIAN, MLT) is offered at 9 Florida public institutions and produced 126 credentials in the 2023 federal award year. The BACHELOR'S (medical laboratory SCIENTIST, MLS, historically medical technologist) is offered at only 5 — the University of West Florida, UCF, Santa Fe College, FGCU and USF — and produced 107. ⚠ Santa Fe is a state college awarding a baccalaureate, so do not assume the bachelor's means a university. ⚠⚠ The ladder is real and is built into the courses: Florida carries a statewide course titled Diagnostic Microbiology for the MLT to MLS Track. A technician can bridge to scientist, which is not true of most certificate-to-degree pairs on this site. ⚠⚠⚠ But read a bachelor's curriculum carefully before enrolling: UWF runs every core subject twice, once as a lecture-plus-laboratory pair and once as a Professional Track course using VIRTUAL laboratories and requiring permission, and the Professional Track capstone asks for evidence of work experience equivalent to a clinical internship.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Biologist and Biological Technician
⚠⚠⚠ Begin with the arithmetic. Florida awards about 5,000 biology bachelor's a year; the biological-scientist occupations hire roughly 13,800 people a year NATIONALLY, and two-thirds of those openings are technician roles at a $57,510 median. ⚠⚠ That is not an argument against the degree — it is an argument for knowing what it is FOR. In practice a Florida biology bachelor's is a preparation for professional school, a research doctorate, teaching or a laboratory career that starts at technician level, and the state's own enrolment data already shows it.
Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician
Two of the largest short-certificate routes into health care in Florida, paying within $60 a year of each other and taught at the same technical colleges — and the state treats them completely differently. ⚠⚠⚠ Florida writes down in statute exactly what a medical assistant may do, including venipuncture and administering medication, and requires NO licence, certificate or training to do it. It requires a pharmacy technician, working behind a counter, to register with the Board of Pharmacy and complete a board-approved programme. ⚠⚠ And the medical assisting programme has FOUR labelled exit points you can leave on and be hired at — the pharmacy technician programme has none.
Medical Laboratory Scientist
Medical laboratory scientists produce the results a diagnosis is made from — haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and the blood bank — and catch the result that is wrong before a physician acts on it. ⚠⚠ Florida is one of the few states that LICENSES this work: you may not report a clinical laboratory result here without a licence. ⚠⚠⚠ Read the wage section before you commit: this is a four-year degree paying less than three of the two-year health paths on this site, and that trade-off is the honest centre of this page.
Phlebotomist
The shortest formal route into health care Florida operates. ⚠⚠⚠ Of 772 phlebotomy credentials awarded by 29 Florida public institutions in 2023, EVERY ONE was a certificate of under twelve weeks — about 165 clock hours, most of it at a district technical college. It pays $45,230, essentially the same as a medical assistant or a pharmacy technician on ten times the training. ⚠⚠ And Florida's clinical laboratory licensing statute names phlebotomists in its EXCLUSION, one rung below two occupations the same statute licenses.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Chemist and Chemical Technician
⚠⚠ The licensed version of laboratory work, and chemistry graduates find it late. Florida licenses clinical laboratory personnel, so a chemistry degree alone does not open hospital bench work.
Physician
⚠ An honest alternative rather than a route: the same chemistry and biology prerequisites, a licensed Florida profession, $82,280 on a bachelor's, and four years instead of twelve. ⚠⚠ Named because a student who loves the science but not the decade should see it before committing.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
⚠ Not a route. Named because it is the other small, science-heavy clinical programme with a narrow Florida footprint and a long credential chain — and because it reaches its credential from a bachelor's, which is now the practical difference between them.
Veterinary Technician
⚠ The human-medicine counterpart of veterinary laboratory work, and licensed in Florida.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Radiologic Technology 23 Florida schools
⚠ The comparison that decides it for many people, and it is not about the science. Both are hospital diagnostic programmes at overlapping colleges — but a radiographer spends the day with patients and a laboratory scientist spends it with specimens and instruments. ⚠⚠ Radiography also pays substantially more at entry ($80,110 against $62,930) on a two-year degree rather than a four-year one, which is worth knowing before you commit four years.
Respiratory Therapy 18 Florida schools
The other hospital programme students weigh against this one. ⚠ Respiratory therapy is two years to a median of $82,280 and is intensely patient-facing and unpredictable; laboratory science is four years to $62,930 and is bench work on a schedule. ⚠⚠ Neither is the better programme — they suit opposite temperaments, and the money runs the other way from the training time.
Nursing 78 Florida schools
⚠ Worth naming because medical laboratory science is often discovered by people who started toward nursing and found they preferred the science to the bedside. Nursing is at 78 Florida institutions against 14 here, so it is far easier to find locally, and it has a long degree ladder. ⚠⚠ The laboratory has the opposite profile: few programmes, little patient contact, and specialisation by discipline rather than by unit.
Phlebotomy 29 Florida schools
⚠⚠ The rung above, and the reason to think of phlebotomy as a beginning rather than a destination. The laboratory ladder runs phlebotomist ($45,230) to medical laboratory technician ($62,930) to medical laboratory scientist ($82,280) — but Florida teaches the technician at only 9 institutions and the scientist at 5, against 29 for phlebotomy. ⚠ The higher rungs pay far better and are far harder to get into, and both are STATE LICENSED where phlebotomy is not.
Dietetics and Nutrition 6 Florida schools
⚠ Named as the other small, science-heavy clinical programme taught at only a handful of Florida institutions — both are laboratory-and-evidence disciplines with narrow footprints and long credential chains. ⚠⚠ Laboratory science reaches its credential from a bachelor's; dietetics now needs a master's, which is the practical difference between them.
Veterinary Technology and Veterinary Assisting 10 Florida schools
⚠ The human-medicine counterpart of the veterinary clinical pathology work in this programme, with a state licence behind it in Florida, which veterinary technology does not have.
Biology and Biomedical Sciences 15 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The finding biology graduates meet too late. Florida LICENSES clinical laboratory personnel, so a general biology degree does not open hospital bench work that an MLS graduate walks into — and MLS pays better than the biological technician role most biology graduates actually enter. Look at it before the third year, not after graduation.
Pharmacy Technology 30 Florida schools
⚠ Named because the two get confused and they are not alike. Both involve precise handling of samples and reagents under regulation, but laboratory science is a diagnostic discipline with a long credential ladder to MLT and then MLS, while pharmacy technology tops out at the technician registration unless you go on to the pharmacy doctorate. If you want a ladder, the laboratory has one.
Medical Assisting 38 Florida schools
⚠ Where the phlebotomy exit point can lead. OCP B and OCP C of medical assisting are phlebotomist certificates, and phlebotomy is the entry rung of the clinical laboratory. A medical assistant who found the specimen-collection half the interesting part has a short, well-defined route into laboratory work — and the laboratory ladder goes considerably further, to MLT and then MLS.
Chemistry and Biochemistry 10 Florida schools
⚠⚠ Named because it is the licensed, credentialled version of laboratory work, and chemistry graduates frequently discover it late. Florida licenses clinical laboratory personnel; an unlicensed chemistry graduate cannot do the same bench work in a hospital that an MLS graduate can.
Medicine 6 Florida schools
⚠ Named as one of the honest alternatives rather than a route. It uses the same chemistry and biology prerequisites, is a licensed profession in Florida, reaches $82,280 on a bachelor's, and takes four years rather than twelve. ⚠⚠ A student who loves the science but not the twelve years should look at it before deciding.
