40.05 Chemistry · SOC 19-2031
⚠⚠⚠ The question this page answers is whether you need a doctorate, and the data is unusually clear: 30% of working chemists report one as required — the highest doctoral share of any occupation on this site — while 56% report a bachelor's. They are two different careers and the choice has to be made in the second undergraduate year. ⚠⚠ Also here: the chemical TECHNICIAN route has 7,600 annual openings on an associate degree, more than chemists and materials scientists combined.
| Role | SOC | Entry | Median | Jobs | Openings/yr | Outlook 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chemist | 19-2031 | Bachelor’s | $91,240 | 84,900 | — | +6% (5,500 jobs) |
| Materials scientist | 19-2032 | Bachelor’s (often PhD) | $117,790 | 8,600 | — | +8% (700 jobs) |
| Chemical technician | 19-4031 | Associate | $60,390 | 60,000 | ⚠ 7,600 | +5% |
| chemists + materials scientists | — | — | $95,060 | 93,500 | 6,500 | +7% |
⚠⚠ Look at the openings column. Chemical technicians have 7,600 annual openings against 6,500 for chemists and materials scientists combined — more hiring, on a two-year degree, in a smaller occupation. It is the largest and most reliable point of entry into a Florida chemistry laboratory, and a chemistry bachelor’s graduate frequently starts in one of those jobs regardless.
⚠ Materials science is the highest-paid row and the smallest: 8,600 jobs nationally, 700 new over the decade. Do not plan a career on a national total that small without knowing where the employers are.
The honest answer is that it depends on which job, and the numbers are unusually clear. O*NET’s incumbent survey for chemists reports:
| Education reported as required | Share |
|---|---|
| Bachelor’s degree | 56% |
| ⚠⚠ Doctoral degree | ⚠⚠ 30% |
| Master’s degree | 10% |
⚠⚠⚠ Thirty per cent is the highest doctoral figure on any occupation this site has written up — against 14% master’s for database architects and no doctoral figure at all on most paths. BLS puts the same thing carefully: “They may need a master’s degree or Ph.D. for some jobs, such as research positions.”
Read those two rows as two different careers:
| Bachelor’s chemistry career | Doctoral chemistry career | |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Analysis, quality control, method execution, formulation support, regulatory testing | Choose the problem, design the programme, publish, direct others |
| Where | Environmental and clinical laboratories, manufacturing QC, food and agriculture, utilities, state agencies | R&D services, pharmaceutical discovery, national laboratories, universities |
| Cost of entry | Four years | ⚠ Four years, then typically five to six more, usually funded but on a stipend |
| Florida evidence | 467 bachelor’s a year | 126 doctorates a year — 19% of the state’s chemistry output |
⚠⚠ Decide which one you are aiming at by the end of the second year, because the preparation diverges: the doctoral route needs undergraduate research, a relationship with a faculty supervisor and letters, and those take two years to build. Nobody tells a sophomore this, and it is the single highest-value thing on this page.
Ten Florida public institutions award chemistry degrees: 670 credentials a year — 467 bachelor’s, 77 master’s and 126 doctorates.
| Institution | Bachelor’s | Master’s | Doctorate |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Florida | 162 | 8 | 46 |
| Florida International | 85 | 21 | 21 |
| University of South Florida | 63 | — | 11 |
| University of Central Florida | 55 | 8 | 14 |
| Florida Atlantic | 38 | — | — |
| ⚠ Florida State | ⚠ 15 | 29 | 31 |
| University of North Florida | 18 | — | — |
| University of West Florida | 15 | — | — |
| FAMU | 12 | — | — |
⚠⚠ Read the Florida State row. It awards four times as many graduate degrees as bachelor’s — the profile of a research department rather than a teaching one. That is a feature if you want undergraduate research and a doctoral route, and something to ask about if you want a large undergraduate cohort. UF is the opposite shape at scale: 162 bachelor’s and 46 doctorates.
Chemistry has no licence and no programme accreditor in the usual sense. What it has is the American Chemical Society approval programme, and the distinction matters:
The certified degree requires foundation coursework in all five sub-disciplines — analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical — plus four in-depth courses, two semesters each of mathematics and physics, and at least 400 hours of hands-on laboratory beyond general chemistry.
⚠⚠ That last figure is the one to hold on to. 400 documented laboratory hours is a concrete, checkable thing to show an employer or a graduate committee, and it is the closest this field comes to a credential. Ask the department, in your first year, what the certified degree requires there and whether your intended track delivers it. It is the same trap as elsewhere on this site: the institution’s accreditation is not your credential.
This is the most consequential course-numbering split this site has measured, because General Chemistry I gates chemistry, biology, pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, nursing, engineering and environmental science all at once.
| Identifier | Carriers | Which universities |
|---|---|---|
CHM1045 + CHM1045L | 15 (11 state colleges, 4 universities) | FAMU, FGCU, FIU, Florida State |
CHM2045 + CHM2045L | 16 (9 state colleges, 7 universities) | FAU, Florida Polytechnic, New College, UF, UNF, USF, UWF |
⚠⚠⚠ Thirty-one institutions, two numbers, ZERO carriers in common — the lectures, the laboratories and the second-semester courses all split the same way, and only Santa Fe carries both forms of anything (General Chemistry II).
⚠⚠ And it is NOT a sector split. The universities divide four against seven, so a student cannot predict the number from the kind of institution. Both are lower division, so no baccalaureate credit is at risk — but SCNS equivalency does not cross numbers, so an automated transfer match between the two finds nothing on the course that more Florida students take than almost any other.
⚠ Contrast Organic Chemistry, which the state DID settle: CHM2210 is carried by 29 institutions under one number, with an integrated CHM2210C at seven more. So this is not “chemistry is messy” — it is one specific unresolved number, on the one course that matters most.
What to do: register by number, keep the syllabus, and if you are transferring, name both numbers in writing to the receiving department before you enrol rather than after.
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is the fifth ACS foundation area and the usual bridge from chemistry into medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry. In Florida it is a real and separate degree — 128 credentials a year at five public institutions: Florida State 63, FIU 48, UF 11 at master’s level, FGCU 5, UNF 1. ⚠⚠ Its federal code sits outside the part of the classification tree this site currently carries, so there is no programme page to link to yet. It is named here so you know to look for it directly, and because a chemistry major who takes the biochemistry sequence is most of the way into it.
⚠ The course family is fragmented in the usual way: BCH4033/BCH4034 Biochemistry I and II (FAMU, FGCU, UNF, USF), BCH3033 General Biochemistry (Broward, FAU, FIU, UWF) and BCH4024 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (six carriers) all cover approximately this subject under three competing numbers. Register by number.
| Percentile | Florida | United States | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10th | $50,200 | $58,460 | −$8,260 |
| 25th | $60,980 | $69,460 | −$8,480 |
| Median | $82,740 | $91,240 | −$8,500 |
| 75th | $108,640 | $125,550 | −$16,910 |
| 90th | $150,840 | $160,830 | −$9,990 |
Florida is below the national figure throughout, by a fairly even $8,000–$9,000 except at the 75th percentile. ⚠ That is a much smaller gap than environmental science’s −$21,390 at the median, and roughly comparable to interior design’s −$6,330 — so chemistry is an ordinary Florida discount rather than a severe one.
⚠⚠ The industry spread is far larger than the geography, and it is the same shape this site found in environmental science:
| Industry (chemists) | Median |
|---|---|
| ⚠ Federal government | $137,720 |
| Research and development services | $105,930 |
| Chemical manufacturing | $88,890 |
$48,830 between the top and bottom rows, on one job title. Federal chemistry employment is real in Florida — food and drug testing, agricultural inspection, environmental laboratories, defence and space-programme laboratories on the Space Coast. ⚠ Federal hiring runs on its own calendar and its own application format; learn it in your third year.
⚠ Materials science pays differently again: R&D services $132,600, management companies $130,330, chemical manufacturing $107,190 — higher at every step, on a much smaller job base.
⚠ Nothing. The chemists and materials scientists page attributes growth to “innovations in a variety of research areas, including nanotechnology and biomaterials” and makes no claim about artificial intelligence in either direction, on either occupation or on chemical technicians.
⚠⚠ That is worth stating plainly rather than filling in, because computational chemistry and machine-learning-assisted discovery are visibly changing the research end of this field. The federal projections do not yet reflect it, and this page will not pretend otherwise. What follows from the pattern on other pages is the usual advice: the exposure is to routine analysis, and the protection is method development, interpretation and accountability for the result.
CHM1045 and CHM2045 are the same course, share no carrier, and will not match automatically on transfer.CHM3120, CHM4130). They are what a working laboratory actually hires on.There is no single required programme for this path. These are the fields students actually arrive from — each is a place in the catalog you can browse.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
No other career on this site is filed in the same field yet — which says nothing about the career, only that we have not written its neighbours. Browse all career paths, or see what else is filed under PHYSICAL SCIENCES.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 16 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before committing to a route.
