09.04 Journalism · SOC 27-3023
⚠⚠⚠ Two occupations, one degree family, opposite directions. Journalists: 47,100 jobs, 3,400 openings a year, $62,200, projected to DECLINE 6%. Public relations specialists: 314,500 jobs, 23,000 openings, $74,750, growing. ⚠⚠ PR is nearly SEVEN times the occupation, pays $12,550 more and has nearly seven times the openings — and Florida trains eight communication graduates for every journalism one.
| Role | SOC | 2025 median | Employed | Openings/yr | Growth 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ⚠⚠ News analyst, reporter, journalist | 27-3023 | $62,200 | ⚠ 47,100 | ⚠ 3,400 | ⚠⚠⚠ −6% |
| ✅ Public relations specialist | 27-3031 | ✅ $74,750 | ✅ 314,500 | ✅ 23,000 | +2% |
⚠⚠⚠ Public relations is nearly seven times the occupation, pays $12,550 more, and has nearly seven times the annual openings. Both take a bachelor's, neither is licensed, and the writing skills overlap almost completely.
⚠⚠ Florida's training follows the jobs, not the romance: 292 journalism bachelor's a year against roughly 2,350 in communication, public relations and advertising. Eight communication graduates for every journalism one.
The handbook attributes the projected 6% decline to:
It adds that increased demand for online news content may partially offset some job losses.
⚠⚠⚠ Note what is NOT in that list: artificial intelligence. This site now covers four other creative and information occupations where BLS does discuss automation — graphic design (“reduce the need for these workers”), web development (“soften the employment growth”), medical records (no dampening claim) and film editing (no AI claim, robotic cameras instead). Journalism's contraction is a BUSINESS-MODEL problem, and it began well before generative tools existed.
⚠⚠ That distinction is practical rather than academic. A decline caused by tooling might reverse or plateau as the tooling matures. A decline caused by advertising revenue leaving an industry does not reverse because the software gets better.
This page is not telling you not to. Reporting and verification is the best writing training in this family: sourcing, interviewing, structure under deadline, and the habit of checking. It travels into every occupation on this page and several elsewhere on this site.
⚠⚠⚠ What it is telling you is to plan the exits in your first year rather than your fourth, because 3,400 national openings a year against 292 Florida graduates in one state is a market you should enter deliberately and not by default.
⚠ And 17% of journalists are self-employed — which in a contracting field usually means freelancing into it rather than choosing independence. Read that number differently from the 35% in film or the 63% in animation.
| Destination | 2025 median | Openings/yr |
|---|---|---|
| ✅✅ Marketing manager | ✅ $166,790 | 34,300 |
| Training and development specialist | $69,280 | ✅ 43,900 |
| Public relations specialist | $74,750 | 23,000 |
| Market research analyst / marketing specialist | $78,760 | ✅ 87,200 |
| ⚠ Journalist | $62,200 | ⚠ 3,400 |
⚠⚠⚠ Census microdata puts COMMUNICATIONS second among the undergraduate fields held by marketing managers, at 88,800 people — behind business at 175,070 and ahead of social sciences. That is an evidenced route to a $166,790 median from this degree family, and almost nobody points at it.
| Pair | Carriers | Overlap |
|---|---|---|
JOU1100 Basic Reporting | 7 — ALL state colleges | ⚠ none |
JOU2100 Journalistic Writing and Reporting | 8 — 3 state colleges, 5 universities | |
ADV3300 Media Planning | 4 universities | ⚠ none |
ADV4300 Media Planning | 4 different universities |
⚠ Both pairs are consistent in level within themselves, so no baccalaureate credit is at risk. The cost is transfer matching — an evaluator comparing ADV3300 against ADV4300 sees two numbers and one course. Send the syllabus.
⚠⚠ And two documented divergences in this family are worth knowing before you register. PUR3000 is Principles of Public Relations at UF and FGCU — the general introduction with the history of the profession, ethics and the PR process — while UWF teaches Introduction to Public Affairs, which is government and nonprofit policy communication. Public affairs is a subfield of PR, so a UWF student misses PR history, media relations and campaigns entirely. And JOU4306 is Critical Journalism statewide, but UWF teaches arts criticism on it and UF teaches ADVANCED DATA JOURNALISM IN R — the prerequisite is the tell: gated on a data course means the data version.
⚠⚠⚠ Take the journalism training and plan the exit. The reporting education is excellent and it is the best writing schooling in this family — but 3,400 national openings a year in a 6% decline is a market to enter with open eyes.
⚠⚠ Look hard at the marketing ladder. Census data puts communications second among the fields marketing managers hold, at 88,800 people, and the median there is $166,790. It is the best-evidenced high-paying exit from this degree family.
⚠ If public relations is the aim, take the measurement courses. PR's weakest point professionally is proving it worked; the practitioners who can are the ones who move up.
⚠⚠ Check what your PR introduction actually covers. PUR3000 is the general profession at UF and FGCU and public affairs at UWF, and the difference is PR history, media relations and campaigns.
And build clips from week one, whatever the destination. Nothing in this family is licensed, so what you can show is the credential — and a student newspaper, a campus radio station or a nonprofit's social media are all available before anyone will pay you.
A program is a field of study, one level above a degree — each page says which degrees it covers and which Florida institutions award them. ⚠ The count is institutions that awarded a credential in the field in 2023; it is not a promise that a school runs this exact degree, and it counts something different from the course-based list further down.
Programs worth knowing about if you are considering this career — ⚠ they do not lead to it. Each row says what it is and is not.
No other career on this site is filed in the same field yet — which says nothing about the career, only that we have not written its neighbours. Browse all career paths, or see what else is filed under COMMUNICATION, JOURNALISM, AND RELATED PROGRAMS.
Selected, not exhaustive — the courses specific to this path plus the foundations it is built on. A course number does not identify a course in Florida: always check your own institution's catalog and take a syllabus to an adviser.
39 Florida public institutions teach courses on this path. The count is how many of the 16 listed courses each one carries — it shows where the path is best covered. It is not a statement that a school offers this as a degree; for that, check the institution’s own programme list.
Requirements change. These are the authorities that decide them — check them directly before committing to a route.
