Turning what happened in a clinical encounter into ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes, and turning those codes into a claim that gets paid. ⚠⚠ The largest carrier count of any health-information route in Florida — 37 public institutions and 416 credentials — and every single one of those credentials is a one-to-two-year CERTIFICATE. ⚠⚠⚠ Which matters, because a certificate makes nobody RHIT-eligible.

The degrees this program covers

⚠⚠⚠ WHAT YOU GET AT THE END IS AN APPRENTICE CREDENTIAL, AND NO PROGRAMME BROCHURE SAYS SO. Pass AAPC's CPC examination without qualifying experience and you are awarded CPC-A — the A is for apprentice. Removing it takes TWO YEARS of verified on-the-job coding experience, or ONE year plus AAPC's Practicode or its 80-hour course. ⚠⚠ Employers advertising for a CPC frequently mean a CPC without the A, so the credential you need a job to earn is the credential the job asks for. ⚠ Ask any programme how its graduates get past that — a real externship, an employer relationship, or Practicode included in the price. A programme with no answer is selling you an examination, not a career. ⚠⚠ THE HOURS: Florida runs this as a three-course clock-hour block, and there are TWO active statewide families. HIM0091–0093 Medical Coder/Biller 1–3 runs 350 + 350 + 320 = 1,020 hours at 15 institutions; HIM0071–0073, marked OCP B, runs 300 + 300 + 310 = 910 hours at 7. ⚠ Five institutions carry both. Add HIM0009 Introduction to Health Information Technology (90 hours, 18 institutions) and the programme is roughly 1,000 to 1,100 clock hours. ⚠⚠⚠ CLOCK HOURS ARE NOT CREDITS. If a Health Information Management associate degree might follow, ask in writing what will articulate BEFORE you enrol — the degree lives at HIM1xxx and HIM2xxx and this programme lives at HIM0xxx, and the level digit is the whole difference.

Health Information Technician, Coder and Medical Office Administrator

⚠⚠⚠ Three different routes wear this name in Florida, they are taught at roughly the same number of institutions, and only ONE of them leads to the field's professional credential. Health information management — 31 institutions, and the associate degree is what makes you RHIT-eligible. Billing and coding — 37 institutions and the largest output, all clock-hour certificates, none of which does. Medical office administration — 36 institutions into an occupation of 850,000 people with no credential ladder at all. ⚠⚠ Choosing wrongly does not waste a term; it forecloses the credential.

⚠⚠⚠ The distinction that decides a career, and it is not obvious from the course titles. RHIT eligibility requires an ASSOCIATE DEGREE from a CAHIIM-accredited programme, so no amount of coding certificate gets you there. ⚠ Florida teaches HIM at 31 institutions to this route's 37 — so if the degree is what you want, it is nearly as available, and you should start there rather than here.

Medical Office Administration 36 Florida schools

⚠ The other administrative route, and the one that overlaps most with this in a small practice — in a physician's office the same person often codes, bills, schedules and verifies insurance. ⚠⚠ The occupations diverge in a hospital, where coding is a specialist role in a health information department and front-office work is not.

Medical Assisting 38 Florida schools

⚠ Named because several institutions teach coding inside the medical assisting framework too (MEA0334C Medical Coding and Insurance Billing), so the same subject appears under two prefixes at two different programme lengths. ⚠⚠ Check which programme a coding course you are offered actually belongs to; it determines what else you will need to finish.
