Finance

Finance programmes teach how money is valued, raised, allocated and risked — the time value of money, how securities and companies are priced, how firms decide what to invest in, how portfolios are built, and how risk is measured and hedged. It is the most quantitative of the business degrees and the usual route into analyst, advisory and risk work.

The degrees this program covers
One of the largest business footprints in the state: 2,968 credentials in finance and financial management in the 2023 federal award year, concentrated at 12 Florida public institutions — this is a university degree, not a state-college one, and that is the main practical difference from accounting. ⚠ Two smaller specialisms sit alongside it: banking and financial support services, and financial planning, the latter being the academic route toward advising individuals rather than analysing companies. ⚠⚠ There is no equivalent of the CPA's 150-hour rule here. What governs entry instead is EXAMINATIONS AND REGISTRATION obtained after you are hired — and the federal handbook makes the useful point that most of those licences require employer sponsorship, so companies do not expect applicants to arrive holding them. ⚠⚠⚠ The credential that does distinguish candidates before hiring is the CFA, and it is a multi-year commitment taken alongside work rather than during a degree.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Financial Analyst
Financial analysts value companies and securities, build the models firms decide by, and measure the risk of being wrong. ⚠ A median of $103,570 with 7% growth. ⚠⚠ It is a CHOICE path, but a concentrated one: counted degrees put business at about half of working analysts, with the social sciences — economics among them — the next largest block. ⚠⚠⚠ And the finding that should redirect some readers: the ANALYTICAL roles in this family are growing at 7% while the ADVISORY ones grow at 1%, despite paying the same or more. This page covers four roles.
Real Estate Agent, Broker and Analyst
⚠⚠⚠ The licence to sell property in Florida is 63 classroom hours — about a week and a half — and employers report 52% accepting a high school diploma and 22% less than that. ⚠⚠ Meanwhile Florida's universities award 408 real estate credentials a year, 138 of them MASTER'S. Those two facts describe different jobs that share a word, and choosing between them is what this page is for.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Human Resources Specialist
⚠ Not a route here. Named because benefits and compensation design is financial work, and because the two degrees compete for the same students — finance is narrower, more quantitative and taught at 12 institutions; business administration is broader and at 46.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

Accounting 50 Florida schools
⚠ The closest sibling and the commonest alternative — the two share most of a first two years, and 49% of working financial analysts hold a business degree of some kind. ⚠⚠ The practical differences: accounting has a licence worth having (the CPA) and a 150-hour rule to plan around; finance has neither, and is taught at 12 Florida institutions against accounting's 50 once bookkeeping certificates are counted. Accounting also starts cleanly at a state college; finance mostly does not.
Statistics 6 Florida schools
⚠ Worth considering seriously if the risk and quantitative side of finance is the draw. Financial risk specialists earn a higher median than analysts ($117,330 against $103,570) and the work is statistical modelling. ⚠⚠ A finance degree with a statistics minor is a stronger quantitative position than either alone, and it is the combination risk and quant job adverts describe.
Data Science and Analytics 13 Florida schools
⚠ The overlap with modern finance is large and growing — pricing, risk models and portfolio analytics are data work. Florida even carries a statewide course number for AI-enhanced business statistics. ⚠⚠ If you find the modelling more interesting than the markets, read this programme before committing to finance.
Real Estate 8 Florida schools
⚠⚠⚠ The nearest neighbour and, for the degree half of this field, effectively the same subject. Real estate finance, investment analysis and valuation are finance disciplines applied to buildings — REE4204 Real Estate Finance and REE4303 Real Estate Finance and Investment are carried at 8 and 6 universities respectively. ⚠ If the analytical side is the draw, finance is the more portable degree and is taught more widely.
Business Administration and Management 45 Florida schools
⚠ The quantitative specialisation, taught at only 12 Florida public institutions and almost entirely at universities — against 46 here. ⚠⚠ If the analytical side of business is the draw, finance is the sharper credential; if you are not sure yet, business administration keeps finance open as a concentration at far more colleges.
