Electrical Technology

Electrical programmes train the people who install, maintain and repair the wiring, panels, circuits and fixtures a building runs on — residential, commercial and industrial — to the National Electrical Code and to the inspector's satisfaction.

The degrees this program covers
Florida publishes this as clock-hour career certificates that stack: Electricity, 1,200 hours in three occupational completion points — electrician helper, residential electrician, commercial electrician — and Electrician, 1,500 hours, which adds industrial. A 750-hour half covers the first two points for students who need to start earning sooner. ⚠ A second route exists and is the traditional one: a registered apprenticeship, where the classroom half runs as Electrical Wiring I–VIII at state colleges while you work for pay. ⚠⚠ Neither route licenses you: Florida licenses the CONTRACTOR, and journeyman requirements are set by counties and municipalities rather than by the state.

Careers this program leads to

Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end, and the sources behind it.

Electrician
Electricians install, maintain and repair the wiring and equipment a building runs on, to a code an inspector will check. ⚠ 818,700 people do it nationally with about 81,000 openings a year — the largest figure on this site — and Florida offers two ways in, one of which pays you while you train.

Careers that name this program, but not as a route

Carpenter
⚠ The neighbouring building trade at the same technical colleges.
Manufacturing and Mechatronics Technician
⚠ The fork worth understanding early: much of the first year is shared, but an electrician wires buildings under a licensing regime while a manufacturing technician keeps machines running inside one. People discover in year two that they wanted the other.
Plumber, Pipefitter and Sprinkler Fitter
⚠ The sister trade, more widely taught in Florida, with its own licensing.

Programs similar to this one

Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers. ⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.

HVAC/R Technology 50 Florida schools
⚠ Closer than it looks: most HVAC service calls are electrical faults, and the two trades share circuits, controls and the same technical colleges. A common second certificate in either direction.
Engineering Technology 76 Florida schools
The step up: electrical and electronics engineering technology degrees lead to controls, industrial automation and estimating — and they pair with the contractor's licence rather than replacing it.
Advanced Manufacturing Technology 28 Florida schools
⚠ The nearest neighbour, and a genuine fork: an electrician wires buildings to the code, a manufacturing technician keeps machines and controls running inside one. Much of the first year is shared, and the two trades poach each other constantly.
Plumbing and Pipefitting Technology 22 Florida schools
⚠ The sister trade, built the same way: a clock-hour certificate of completion points, or a paid apprenticeship. The electrician helper course is at 26 public institutions against about ten for plumbing. ⚠ Florida's journeyman reciprocity provision (s. 489.1455) names plumbing, pipe fitting, mechanical and HVAC, but not electrical.
Industrial Machinery Maintenance 7 Florida schools
Much of a modern breakdown is electrical, and maintenance technicians who can work confidently on controls and motors are the ones plants keep.
Carpentry and Building Construction Technology 25 Florida schools
⚠ The neighbouring building trade, taught at many of the same technical colleges. Unlike carpentry, electrical work is licensed at the contractor level under a separate part of chapter 489.

Florida public institutions offering this program

41 institutions awarded a credential in this field in 2023, at these levels: Certificate (1-2 years), Certificate (2-4 years). A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.
