Automotive technology programmes train the people who diagnose and repair cars and light trucks — engines, transmissions, brakes, steering and suspension, electrical and electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and the emissions and engine management that tie them together. ⚠ It is one of the most widely available programmes in Florida, and almost all of it is taught at technical colleges.
The degrees this program covers
Florida teaches this as CLOCK-HOUR career certificates rather than degrees, and the structure is worth understanding before you enrol. The state framework Master Automotive Service Technology runs 1,800 hours across nine occupational completion points — each one a hireable exit: services assistor, engine repair, automatic transmission, manual drivetrain, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical and electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. ⚠ You can stop at a completion point, work, and come back for the next one; that is what the structure is for. A shorter Maintenance and Light Repair certificate (600 hours) is the fastest way into paid work, and several colleges add an associate degree in automotive service MANAGEMENT above the certificates for people moving toward running a shop. ⚠⚠ Florida Statute 1004.925 requires every automotive service technology education programme in the state to be INDUSTRY CERTIFIED — ask any programme to show you its ASE Education Foundation certification before you enrol.
Careers this program leads to
Each one sets out the courses along the way, the licence or certification at the end,
and the sources behind it.
Neighbouring fields that share much of the same coursework, and often the same employers.
⚠ Read these before you commit to a major — which doors a neighbouring degree
keeps open is the part no catalog tells you, and it is far cheaper to change now than later.
47 institutions awarded a credential in this field in 2023,
at these levels: Associate, Certificate (1-2 years), Certificate (12 weeks-1 year), Certificate (2-4 years).
A school appears here if it awards anything in the field, however limited
its offering — a technical college teaching only practical nursing has a nursing
program. Listed alphabetically, not ranked.

the most recent year published. ⚠ It records what was awarded, which is
strong evidence of what is offered, but a program launched since 2023
will not appear here. Check the institution’s own catalog before applying.
