Course Description

TPA2200C – Introduction to Technical Theatre is a 3-credit course covering the physical production of theatre: scenery, lighting, sound, properties, rigging, and the shop and stage practices that turn a design into something an audience sits in front of. The C suffix reflects a required laboratory — typically split roughly evenly between classroom and shop, with Broward College's version stated as 32 lecture and 32 laboratory hours.

The course serves two quite different audiences at once, and does so deliberately. For students pursuing technical theatre or entertainment technology it is the foundation course — the first exposure to tools, materials, and the vocabulary of the craft. For acting, directing, and general theatre students it is the course that makes them useful and literate backstage, and most theatre degrees require it for exactly that reason: a director who does not understand what a set change costs in time and labor makes unworkable decisions.

Content covers the production organization — the technical director, designers, stage manager, crew heads, and how a production is staffed and scheduled; theatre architecture — proscenium, thrust, arena, and black box, and what each implies technically; reading drafting — ground plans, sections, elevations, and lighting plots; scenic construction — flats, platforms, framing, joinery, fasteners, and materials; tools — hand and power tool use and shop safety; rigging — counterweight and hemp systems, line sets, and load handling; scenic painting — techniques, texture, and paint elevations; properties — sourcing, fabrication, and management; stage lighting — instruments, electricity and load calculation, hanging and focusing, color, dimmers, control consoles, and basic design vocabulary; sound — reinforcement and playback systems, microphones, and signal flow; costumes and makeup at an introductory level; stage management — the prompt book, cueing, and running a show; and production process — load-in, technical rehearsal, performance, and strike.

Florida is one of the strongest live-entertainment technical markets in the country, and for reasons specific to this state: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld and the surrounding themed-entertainment industry employ technicians year-round at scale; the cruise industry operates out of Miami, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, and Tampa; and the convention and corporate events business in Orlando, Miami Beach, and Tampa is enormous. A student with lighting, audio, rigging, or automation skill has a genuine career path here that does not depend on getting cast.

Central Florida themed entertainment is the reason this course matters more here than elsewhere

Worth understanding before choosing electives. A theatre technician in most of the country works seasonal contracts at regional houses. In Central Florida the same skills support full-time, benefited, year-round employment at the theme parks and the vendors serving them — show lighting, automation, audio, ride and show maintenance, technical services, and entertainment production. Universal, Disney, and SeaWorld hire continuously and recruit from Florida college programs directly.

The practical advice that follows: the skills that transfer best to that market are automation, show control, networking, rigging, and audio — the technical, systems-heavy end — more than scenic carpentry. Students aiming at it should prioritize those units, pursue ETCP rigging certification when eligible, learn Vectorworks and QLab, and get comfortable with networked control. Internships at the parks are competitive and are the standard entry route.

⚠ Shop and stage work carries real physical risk, and the safety rules are the point

The most important content in the course. Theatre technicians work with table saws, at height on ladders and lifts, around suspended loads, and with electricity — and entertainment has a serious injury and fatality record from rigging failures and falls. The habits that prevent harm are specific: eye protection and hearing protection every time, closed-toe shoes with no exceptions, tie back long hair and remove loose clothing and jewelry, never work alone on a machine, never stand under a load, always call "heads" and mean it, and confirm a counterweight arbor is balanced before releasing the brake.

Students should also know that they are entitled to refuse unsafe work — a norm the professional industry has moved toward and that a student in a hurry may not feel able to invoke. OSHA 10 for general industry or construction is inexpensive, sometimes offered through the college, and is increasingly expected by employers in this field.

Actors and directors: this is the course that makes you employable and easy to work with

Performance students sometimes treat technical theatre as a requirement to be endured. Two arguments against that. First, practical: nearly every working theatre artist in the early career supports themselves partly through technical work, and a performer who can hang a light, run a board, or stage manage is hired between acting jobs while one who cannot is not. Second, artistic: a director who understands what a scene change costs, or an actor who understands why a light must be found rather than wandered out of, works better with the people who build the show. The course also teaches the vocabulary — stage left, upstage, gel, strike, go — without which communication in a working theatre is impossible.

Crew hours are usually required and are usually the real course

Most Florida sections attach a production crew assignment — running crew, shop hours, load-in, or strike on a departmental show. Expect this to fall outside class time, in the evenings and on weekends, and to cluster heavily in the week before an opening. Students who plan a term without allowing for tech week are the ones who conflict with work schedules and other courses.

Treat it as the most valuable component. Shop and crew hours are where the material becomes real, where faculty form the impressions that lead to being cast on a design or a crew head position, and where the professional habits — showing up early, staying until called, doing the unglamorous task without complaint — are formed. Technical theatre hiring runs almost entirely on reputation and referral.

Numbering and title variation — the same course under several numbers

Florida is inconsistent here in a way worth checking before registering. The subject appears as TPA2200 and TPA2200C "Introduction to Technical Theatre" (University of South Florida and others), as TPA2200C titled "Stagecraft" (Broward College), and as TPA2210 "Introduction to Technical Theatre" (State College of Florida). Some institutions split scenery, lighting, and sound into separate courses (TPA2220, TPA2248, TPA2290) rather than teaching one survey.

SCNS equivalency applies to the same number at the same level, never across numbers — so TPA2200C transfers as TPA2200C, but a receiving program that requires TPA2210 is not obliged to accept it. Students transferring into a B.A. or B.F.A. in theatre should confirm the substitution before taking it, and should note that B.F.A. programs frequently require an audition or portfolio review for admission regardless of coursework completed.

Keep everything you build — the portfolio is the credential

Technical theatre hiring runs on evidence of work, not transcripts. From the first shop project, photograph what you build, keep your drafting, save your paperwork (cue sheets, prompt book pages, hookups, shop drawings), and note your specific role and the production. A student who graduates with a documented body of work and a list of shows is hireable; one with a degree and no portfolio is not. This is also the reason to take crew assignments in areas you have not done before — breadth is what gets an early-career technician called back.
