Course Description
TPA2000C, Introduction to Theatrical Design, teaches the visual and spatial vocabulary of theatre. It introduces the elements of design — line, shape, space, colour, form, texture and mass — and asks students to apply them to the specific problem of supporting a script in performance, across scenery, costume, lighting and sound.
Florida State University describes a course introducing "the fundamental elements of design including spot, line, shape, and color while relating these elements to theatrical production design." The University of West Florida, which titles its version Theatrical Design for Performers, describes "introduction to theatrical design for the stage using the design principles of line, shape, space, color, form, texture, and size." The University of Florida, tellingly, calls it Entertainment Design Fundamentals and frames it as introducing "the fundamental elements of design" and creating "a foundation for a successful design process in entertainment."
The distinction from a general art or design course is that theatrical design is subordinate and collaborative by nature. A designer does not make an object to be looked at; they make an environment that serves a script, a director's interpretation, and a company of performers, and that must be built on a budget, in a specific room, by a specific date. Students who arrive expecting self-expression usually leave with something more useful: the discipline of solving someone else's problem well.
The C suffix marks studio work. This is not a lecture course — students draw, render, model, research and present, and the deliverable is a portfolio of design work rather than an examination paper.
TPA2000C is offered at approximately 9 Florida institutions, split between state colleges and universities, and carries 3 credits.
⚠ Three titles, and two of them tell you the course has been aimed differently
- Introduction to Theatrical Design — the statewide title, and Florida State University's and Seminole State College's.
- Theatrical Design for Performers — the University of West Florida. Prerequisite TPA2200 or TPA2200C (technical theatre).
- Entertainment Design Fundamentals — the University of Florida.
These are the same subject, but the titles signal real differences in audience and framing. UWF's "for Performers" indicates a course serving acting students — designed to give performers enough design literacy to work with designers, rather than to train designers. UWF is also the only one of the three with a prerequisite, which suggests the course sits after technical theatre in its sequence rather than at the entry point.
UF's "Entertainment Design" is the more consequential retitle, and it is characteristically Floridian: it broadens the frame beyond theatre to include themed entertainment, which is a serious professional field in this state and an area in which UF's programme has an established reputation. A student intending theme park or themed entertainment design should notice that framing.
Match on the number, then read the description. A student transferring from a performer-oriented section into a design-track programme may find the receiving department expects more studio foundation than the course provided.

- The Art of Theatrical Design: Elements of Visual Composition, Methods, and Practice (Kaoime Malloy) is the most commonly adopted text for an introductory design course covering all areas.
- Designing and Painting for the Theatre (Pecktal), Scene Design and Stage Lighting (Parker, Wolf & Block) and Theatrical Design and Production (J. Michael Gillette) are the standard broader references; Gillette is the most widely used single volume in American theatre programmes.
- Drawing and Rendering for Theatre (Clare Rowe) and Drafting for the Theatre (Rose & Almy) are the standard technique references for the drawing and drafting components.
- Materials, which are a real cost: drawing and drafting supplies, scale rule, drafting board or vellum, model-making materials (foam core, mat board, adhesives), and rendering media. A material and supply fee is common, and students should budget beyond it.
- Software introduced at this level where the course includes it: Vectorworks Spotlight (the industry standard for theatrical drafting, with free student licensing), AutoCAD (also free for students), SketchUp for quick 3D, Adobe Photoshop for rendering and presentation, and QLab where sound is touched.

- Professional context: USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology) — the professional body for design and technology, with student membership, an annual conference and portfolio review; United Scenic Artists Local USA 829, the designers' union; and IATSE for technical crafts. The Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) runs auditions and design portfolio reviews that Florida students attend routinely and that produce real job offers.

Career Pathways
- Set and Exhibit Designer — SOC 27-1027. The direct theatrical destination, normally reached via an MFA for design work at professional scale.
- Costume Designer, Lighting Designer, Sound Designer — SOC 27-1027 and 27-4014. Same pattern: portfolio and MFA-driven.
- Technical Director and Production Manager — SOC 27-2012 and 11-9199.
- Stagehand, Electrician, Carpenter and Wardrobe — SOC 51-9199 and 27-4015. ⚠ These are the realistic entry roles, they are IATSE union work in the major Florida markets, and they pay meaningfully better than most entry-level arts positions.
- ⚠ Themed Entertainment Designer — SOC 27-1027 and 27-1021. This is the distinctively Florida career and it is substantial. Walt Disney Imagineering, Universal Creative and the design firms around Orlando employ show designers, art directors, scenic designers, lighting designers and show set designers, and Orlando is one of the two global centres of the themed entertainment industry. UF's retitling of this very course as Entertainment Design Fundamentals reflects that reality. Compensation and stability substantially exceed regional theatre.
- Cruise Line Entertainment Production — SOC 27-2012 and 27-4015. Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian are headquartered in South Florida and run large theatrical operations.
- Event, Trade Show and Corporate Experience Designer — SOC 27-1021 and 13-1121. Orlando is one of the largest convention markets in the United States, which supports a substantial live-event production sector.
- Film and Television Art Department — SOC 27-1027 and 27-4032.
- Museum Exhibit Designer — SOC 27-1027 and 25-4012.
- Theatre Educator — SOC 25-2031, with Drama 6-12 certification through a state-approved programme and the FTCE.
- Florida employment context: this is one of the few arts fields where Florida is a national centre rather than a regional market. The theme parks, the cruise lines, the Orlando convention and live-event industry, and the themed-entertainment design firms together constitute a large and continuous employer base, and they hire from Florida programmes directly. Students should know that the portfolio and the technical credits are what get hired, not the transcript, and should start building both in this course.
Special Information
Position in the curriculum
TPA2000C is a lower-division foundation course. Its position in the sequence varies: at institutions where it is the entry point it is taken in the first or second year with no prerequisite; at the University of West Florida it follows TPA2200 or TPA2200C (technical theatre — sets and lights), so students meet the shop before they design for it. It precedes the specialised upper-division design courses — scene design, lighting design, costume design — and it is normally required for design and technical theatre tracks while also serving performers.
Prerequisites narrative
Most institutions list none, treating it as the foundation course. UWF requires technical theatre first. Some programmes restrict enrolment to theatre majors or require departmental permission. No prior drawing ability is assumed — a common and reasonable anxiety among students, and instructors expect to teach the drawing. What is assumed is willingness to make things, show them and be critiqued.
Course format and workload
Three credits with integrated studio work. Contact time is typically above three hours a week because studio courses schedule extended sessions, and a material and supply fee is common. Assessment is portfolio-based: a series of design projects on assigned scripts, presented and critiqued, plus research packages and drafting exercises. There is often no traditional examination.
Plan for the studio pattern, which is unlike a lecture course. Projects consume more time than estimated, materials cost money, and the work cannot be done the night before because it is physical. Many programmes also expect students to work on departmental productions concurrently, in the shop or on crew — that is usually a separate practicum number but it is where the learning is consolidated, and it takes evenings.
Keep everything. This course generates the first pieces of a design portfolio, and in this field the portfolio is the qualification. Photograph models and renderings properly, keep the research packages, and document process as well as product — reviewers at USITT and SETC portfolio reviews look for process.
Transfer and articulation
TPA2000C is a 2000-level SCNS course and carries the statewide equivalency guarantee among Florida public institutions; it applies to the A.A. and A.S. and transfers reasonably cleanly. Two cautions specific to this field. First, the audience divergence described above — a performer-oriented section provides less studio foundation than a designer-oriented one, and a receiving design track may notice. Second, and more significant, theatre transfer is portfolio-driven: BFA design programmes normally require a portfolio review for admission to the track regardless of what transferred, and placement into the upper-division design sequence follows from that review rather than from the transcript. Contact the receiving department early.
Course-code variations across Florida
The TPA prefix is theatre production and administration. Relevant numbers: TPA2000/TPA2000C (this course, under any of its three titles); TPA2200/TPA2200C and TPA2210 (technical theatre — sets and lights; UWF's prerequisite); TPA2232C (technical theatre — costumes and makeup); TPA2248/TPA2248C (stage makeup); TPA2290/TPA2290L (technical theatre laboratory); TPA3004 (rendering for the stage), TPA3022 (lighting design I), TPA3064 and TPA4060 (scene design), TPA3230 (costume design). Adjacent prefixes: THE for theatre history and dramatic literature, TPP for acting and performance. Note that ART-prefixed design fundamentals courses are not substitutes — they teach design without the script, the collaboration or the production constraint that define the theatrical version.
AI Integration
Design is among the areas most visibly affected by image-generation tools, and this course is where students should form a working position on them rather than either adopting them uncritically or refusing to look.
Where AI is genuinely useful in a design process. Image generation is effective for early ideation and mood — producing a range of visual directions quickly, testing a palette, or generating reference for a look you cannot find photographs of. Used at the research and concept stage, alongside historical and photographic research, it can widen the field of options a designer considers. Language models help with script analysis prompts, period research orientation, and drafting the written parts of a design presentation.
Where it fails, specifically in theatrical design. Generated images are not buildable. They have no scale, no structural logic, no sightline discipline, and no relationship to a real stage's dimensions, weight limits or shift requirements. A generated set image frequently contains geometry that cannot exist, and it says nothing about how a wall is framed, how a piece moves, or what it costs. The same applies to costume: an image is not a pattern, a fabric choice or a garment that an actor can move and quick-change in.
Models are also unreliable on period accuracy, blending decades and cultures into a plausible-looking hybrid — which is precisely the failure a research package exists to prevent. And they cannot do the thing that makes a design good: respond to this script, this director's interpretation, this cast, this theatre and this budget. Design is subordinate and specific, and a generic image is by definition not that.
The professional and ethical questions are live, not hypothetical. Image models are trained on artists' work, including designers' renderings, without consent or compensation, and the design community is actively divided about that. Attribution and disclosure norms are still forming. Several theatres and design firms have issued policies; some portfolio reviews now ask whether work is AI-assisted. A student entering the field should expect to be asked and should be able to answer honestly.
The portfolio consequence, which is the practical one. In this field the portfolio is the qualification, and it is reviewed by people who design for a living. A portfolio of generated images is transparent to them — it lacks process, drafting, models and the evidence of problem-solving that reviewers look for — and submitting one damages the student rather than helping. What is valued is the demonstrated ability to take a script and a constraint and produce something buildable, which is exactly what this course teaches and exactly what cannot be generated.
Academic integrity. Policies vary and design faculty differ, with some permitting AI at the research and ideation stage while prohibiting it in submitted renderings and drafting. Read the syllabus, ask if it is unclear, and disclose use when in doubt — in this field, disclosure is becoming the professional norm.
