Course Description
This course prepares students for entry-level employment as a Structural Drafter in the Architecture and Construction career cluster. The course provides competency-based, applied learning in the interpretation and production of structural drawings for wood, steel, and concrete construction systems. Students develop proficiency in both manual drafting techniques and industry-standard Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software, with emphasis on meeting professional drawing standards required by engineering and architectural firms. This course represents an Occupational Completion Point (OCP) within Florida's Drafting and CADD Technology program (TDR program series) and is governed by the Florida Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks under the Engineering Technologies / Technical Drafting taxonomy.
The course content is aligned with Florida FDOE standards and the Architecture and Construction career cluster. Learning Outcomes
Required Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Interpret and produce structural drawings for wood frame, structural steel, and reinforced concrete construction systems.
- Apply proper dimensioning, notation, and symbology to structural drawings in accordance with industry standards (ANSI/ASME Y14 and related standards).
- Produce accurate multi-view orthographic drawings, sections, details, and structural schedules.
- Use AutoCAD or equivalent CADD software to create, modify, layer, dimension, and plot structural drawings.
- Read and interpret construction documents, including working drawings, written specifications, bid forms, and contract documents.
- Identify structural material properties including dimension lumber, engineered lumber, steel shapes, concrete, reinforcing steel (rebar), and concrete masonry units (CMU).
- Apply workplace safety practices consistent with OSHA regulations and industry standards in a drafting lab environment.
- Demonstrate professional work habits, employability skills, and ethical standards appropriate to the drafting field.
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and other technical professionals to translate design intent into accurate working drawings.

TDR0875 — Structural Drafter — is an Occupational Completion Point (OCP) within Florida's statewide Drafting and CADD Technology program framework. Students who complete this OCP earn a certificate of completion and are deemed employment-ready at the structural drafter level. The broader Drafting program is governed by the Florida Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks under the Architecture and Construction career cluster and spans multiple OCPs totaling up to 1,500 contact hours for the full program sequence.
