Course Description
SPM4503 applies economics to the sport industry. The statewide description states
both halves of the job: the course "examine[s] major economic issues in the sport industry"
and "introduce[s] the methodology of economics that can be used to analyze these issues."
⚠ Read that second clause carefully — it is the part students miss. This is not a
survey of interesting facts about sport business. It is an applied economics course: demand and
supply, elasticity, marginal analysis, market structure, externalities, public goods, labour market
theory and the basics of empirical inference, taught with sport as the application. The sport makes
the examples memorable; the economics is the content.
It is an upper-division course. Exactly one Florida public institution carries it: the
University of West Florida, under the statewide title Economic Issues in Sport.
Because of that, this guide is written as a single-institution guide and hedges accordingly —
UWF's syllabus is the authority on emphasis, and where this guide describes the field rather than
the course it says so.

This is the single most useful distinction in the guide, because the two are routinely confused
and because Florida's other sport-money course is far more widely available.

They overlap — both will discuss stadium financing — but they are not substitutes, and a
degree programme requiring one will not normally accept the other. If your programme
requires a sport finance course and SPM4503 is what is available to you, ask the department in
writing before you enrol. If you are choosing freely and intend to work in a team's or a
department's business office, take the finance course; if you intend graduate study, policy work, or
you simply want to understand why the arguments about public money for stadiums are the way they are,
this is the better course.

Florida-Specific Content
⚠⚠ Florida is one of the best places in the United States to study this subject, because
the state has run the experiment repeatedly and the results are public record.
- Public subsidy of professional facilities. Florida has a long and
well-documented history of state and local contribution to professional sports facilities,
including a state sales-tax rebate programme for professional sports facilities that has been the
subject of repeated legislative scrutiny and of state audits examining whether the promised
economic returns materialised. ⚠ Those audits and legislative analyses are public documents
and they are exactly the kind of primary evidence this course should use — far better than
a textbook example from another state.
- Spring training. The Grapefruit League is a Florida-specific subsidy case with
an unusual feature: the facilities are used intensively for about six weeks and must justify
themselves for the rest of the year. Several Florida communities have paid substantially to retain
or attract a team, and several have lost teams to Arizona regardless. It is the relocation-threat
bargaining model in its purest form.
- Three major-league markets — Miami, Tampa Bay and Orlando — with different
market sizes, demographics and attendance histories, plus the long-running and genuinely
instructive question of stadium economics in the Tampa Bay baseball market.
- Sport tourism. Florida's youth and amateur tournament economy is a case where
the economic impact claims are more defensible than usual, because the visitors genuinely do come
from out of state — which makes it a useful contrast with the professional stadium case rather than
an example of the same thing.
- NIL. Florida legislated early on name, image and likeness, so the state has
more elapsed time than most for studying what happened to the college athlete labour market once
the restriction was removed.
- No state personal income tax — a real and frequently studied factor in
professional athlete location decisions and in the effective value of a contract signed in Florida
compared with one signed in California or New York.

⚠⚠ One Florida public carrier — what that means for you
UWF is the only Florida public institution offering SPM4503. Three consequences:
- There is no second public catalog to check this guide
against. Where this guide describes standard field content rather than UWF's specific
syllabus, treat it as a well-founded expectation rather than a statement about your section.
- ⚠ Transferring this course out is uncertain. SCNS
guarantees transfer to an institution offering the same course, and almost no Florida
public institution does. Expect elective credit elsewhere, and keep the syllabus.
- Two private Florida institutions also carry the number
— as Sport Economics and Sports Economics. They are outside this catalog's scope,
but the titles are informative: both drop "issues" and name the discipline, which supports reading
this as a genuine economics course rather than a topics survey.
⚠ The prerequisite the state does not require but the course assumes
The statewide record lists no prerequisite. But the description promises to
"introduce the methodology of economics", and that is a discipline the gate does not
name — the classic pattern in which students are caught.
What you actually need: comfort with graphs of two variables and with reading a
shift as distinct from a movement along a curve; percentages, ratios and rates of change; the idea of
holding something constant; and enough algebra to rearrange an equation. Calculus is not
required. A principles of microeconomics course (ECO2023) beforehand is the
single best preparation and is strongly recommended even though it is not required; a statistics
course helps with the empirical material.
If you arrive without any of that, the fix is small and should be done in week one rather than
week six: work through a free principles-of-microeconomics unit on supply, demand, elasticity and
market structure. The gap is a few hours of work early and a failed midterm late.

UWF offers this course at 3 semester credits. No Florida institution publishes a
contact-hour figure; the 45 hours stated here is the Florida convention for a 3-credit lecture course
and is derived, not published.

⚠ The general pattern is worth knowing for any SPM course. Of the 189 distinct SPM
identifiers carried by Florida public institutions, 145 are offered at exactly one
school, and none at more than six. In this prefix, a course transferring by number
is the exception rather than the rule. Plan on sending syllabi.
Position in the curriculum
Upper division, and best taken after the introduction to sport management and ideally after
principles of microeconomics. It pairs well with sport finance (SPM4505), sport law
(SPM4723, where the antitrust material connects directly) and sport business analytics
(SPM4703).
Course format
Lecture and discussion with problem sets; frequently a term paper applying the analysis to a
specific case, and in some sections an empirical exercise with real data. Expect graphs on exams.
AI Integration
Economics is a field where AI tools are genuinely useful and where their failures are specific
enough to be worth naming.
Where they help: explaining a concept a second way when the textbook's version did
not land; generating practice problems; writing and debugging R, Python or Excel code for an
empirical exercise; cleaning and reshaping data; and drafting the structure of a paper.
Where they fail:
- ⚠⚠ The failure mode coincides exactly with the course's central lesson. The
most important thing this course teaches is that economic impact claims about sport are usually
wrong, and wrong in a predictable direction. Those inflated claims — produced by consultants,
repeated by teams, reprinted by local media — are abundant in training text, while the peer-reviewed
studies contradicting them are comparatively rare. So a model asked "what is the economic
impact of a new stadium?" will tend to produce precisely the boosterish number the course is
designed to teach you to dismantle. That makes it a good exercise and a bad source: get the
model's answer, then find the actual literature, and write about the difference.
- Numbers are confidently wrong. Contract values, attendance figures, subsidy
amounts and revenue totals are exactly the sort of specific quantity models fabricate. Every figure
in your work needs a real source — Spotrac, a league financial disclosure, a government document,
a published study.
- Economic reasoning is shallow. Models reproduce textbook conclusions well and
handle a genuinely novel application poorly — they will tell you what a salary cap is supposed to do
rather than what the evidence says it does.
- Fabricated citations. Verify every reference in a library database.
Academic integrity and professional responsibility. Follow your institution's
policy and disclose AI use where required. Professionally: if you end up doing feasibility or impact
work, you will be the person whose name is on a number a city council relies on.
The field's credibility problem is built entirely out of numbers nobody checked, and you
should not add to it.
