Course Description

SON1100C – Practical Aspects of Sonography is the introductory scanning course in a Florida diagnostic medical sonography program — the point at which a student first puts a transducer on a person and tries to produce a usable image. Titles vary: Practical Aspects of Sonography, Principles and Protocols of Sonographic Imaging (Gulf Coast State), Procedures and Protocols of Sonographic Imaging (Polk), and Principles and Protocols of Imaging and Lab (Daytona State).

The course teaches the physical craft that every sonographic specialty rests on: how to hold and move a transducer, how to find an anatomical plane and stay in it, how to optimize an image, and how to document a study to protocol. It is genuinely difficult in a way students do not anticipate — the sonographer must mentally reconstruct three-dimensional anatomy from a two-dimensional slice while moving the probe in several axes simultaneously, and there is no way to shortcut the hours required.

Content covers scanning fundamentals — transducer selection, orientation, and manipulation (sliding, rocking, angling, rotating, and pressure); image orientation and the relationship between probe marker and screen; scanning planes — sagittal, transverse, coronal, and oblique; instrument optimization — depth, gain, time-gain compensation, focus, frequency, and dynamic range; knobology in practice; ergonomics and injury prevention; patient care and communication in the scanning setting; infection control and transducer disinfection; protocols — required images, labeling, and measurement conventions; documentation and archiving; artifacts — recognition and whether they are useful or misleading; basic abdominal and superficial structure identification; and professional practice including scope, ethics, and the sonographer's role.

⚠ Ergonomics is career-preservation content, and it starts in this course

Work-related musculoskeletal injury is a documented, career-ending occupational hazard in sonography — sustained transducer pressure, awkward reach, and static posture produce shoulder, neck, wrist, and back injuries at high rates across the profession. The habits that prevent it are formed in the first scanning course, and they are specific: bring the patient to you rather than reaching, adjust the table and chair rather than contorting, keep the scanning arm below shoulder height and close to the body, support the arm, use the minimum pressure that produces the image, and vary position. The SDMS industry standards for ergonomics are free and worth reading in week one rather than after symptoms appear. Students who form good habits here practice for thirty years; those who do not may not.

Scanning skill comes from hours, and the plateau is normal

Beginners commonly find that they cannot locate structures that the instructor finds instantly, cannot hold a plane while adjusting a control, and produce images that look nothing like the textbook. This is universal and it resolves with repetition. What accelerates it: scan-lab hours beyond the scheduled class, deliberate practice of one skill at a time rather than attempting whole protocols too early, and reviewing recorded images against the textbook appearance. Programs that provide open lab time are providing the most valuable resource they have.

Peer scanning has its own professional etiquette

Students practice on each other, which means being scanned as well as scanning. Programs set expectations about draping, consent, professionalism, and confidentiality, and students should treat them seriously. Peer scanning also occasionally reveals genuine incidental findings in a classmate; programs have procedures for that, and the appropriate response is to follow them rather than to speculate or announce.

Artifacts are not all errors — some are diagnostic

A distinction beginners find counterintuitive. Acoustic shadowing behind a gallstone and posterior enhancement behind a fluid-filled cyst are artifacts, and they are also the findings that identify what the structure is. Others — reverberation, mirror image, side lobe — mislead. Learning which artifacts to eliminate and which to seek is part of interpreting the image rather than merely producing it.

Start on ultrasound physics early — the SPI is a separate examination

ARDMS credentialing requires passing the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination in addition to a specialty examination, and SPI is heavily physics: waves, attenuation, resolution, transducer construction, Doppler principles, artifacts, and bioeffects. Students frequently underestimate it, and it is the examination candidates most often have to retake. The practical advice is to treat physics as a running concern from the first term rather than a cramming exercise later, and to connect each physics concept to what the knobs on the machine actually do.

Florida does not license sonographers

Unlike radiographers and respiratory therapists, sonographers have no Florida state license. That makes the ARDMS credential the operative qualification, and it makes CAAHEP program accreditation correspondingly important, since it is the cleanest eligibility pathway. Confirm accreditation before enrolling.

Credits and titles vary

The course is carried at 2 credits at Gulf Coast State College and at 3 at others, under at least four titles, with the C suffix reflecting integrated scanning laboratory hours. Contact hours exceed the credit line as they do throughout sonography and its sister disciplines. Note also that SON1000 and SON1214 carry related introductory content at some institutions — Palm Beach State uses SON1000, Tallahassee State uses SON1214 for Practical Aspects of Sonography I. SCNS equivalency applies to the same number at the same level, never across numbers — verify which your program requires.
