Course Description

RTE1804L – Radiographic Clinical Education I is the first supervised clinical course in Florida radiography programs — the point at which a student moves from the classroom and energized laboratory into an actual radiology department, working with actual patients. At Daytona State College it carries 1 credit; credit values differ substantially elsewhere (see below).

The course has two jobs. The first is orientation: learning how a radiology department works, where things are, who does what, how a request moves from order to completed examination, and how to function inside a clinical team as the most junior member of it. The second is initial competency: performing basic radiographic procedures under direct supervision and being formally evaluated on them — typically the chest and respiratory system, appendicular skeleton (extremities), and abdomen, which are the highest-volume examinations in any department and the right place to start.

Content covers department orientation — organization, personnel roles, workflow, and information systems; professional conduct — appearance, punctuality, communication, and the standards a clinical affiliate expects; patient care in practice — identification and verification, transfer and assistance, communication with patients who are frightened, in pain, or unable to cooperate, and infection control; radiation protection applied — collimation, shielding, technique selection, and ALARA in a working department; equipment operation — the radiographic room, portable units, image receptors, and the picture archiving and communication system; positioning under supervision for chest, extremity, and abdominal examinations; image evaluation — judging whether an image meets diagnostic criteria and what to change if it does not; documentation — competency records, procedure logs, and clinical evaluations; and supervision requirements and the student's limits.

⚠ Count the hours, not the credits — this is the defining feature of clinical education

The most important practical fact about every L-suffix clinical course in a Florida radiography program. Clinical credit is heavily discounted relative to classroom credit: where a lecture course awards one credit for roughly 15–16 contact hours, clinical education awards one credit for something on the order of 100–130 hours. A student reading a schedule by credit total will badly underestimate the time commitment.

Daytona State's sequence illustrates the progression directly: RTE1804L (1 credit) is the introductory clinical, RTE1814L (2 credits) roughly doubles the weekly commitment, and by RTE2844L (3 credits) the student is in the department something close to full time. In practice this typically runs about 8 clinical hours per week at the start and 24 or more by the final term, on hospital schedules that include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and call.

Plan the program around this rather than around the credit line. Radiography students who attempt to keep full-time employment through the clinical sequence are the ones who most often withdraw.

Clinical competencies are what the ARRT actually certifies

Worth understanding early, because it reframes what these courses are for. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) requires candidates to document completion of a defined set of clinical competencies — specific radiographic procedures performed on real patients to a supervised standard — in addition to graduating from a JRCERT-accredited program and passing the certification examination. Florida then licenses radiologic technologists separately through the Department of Health under Chapter 468, Part IV, F.S. and Chapter 64E-3, F.A.C.

The practical consequence: clinical education courses are not "practice." They are the mechanism by which a student generates the documented evidence the credential requires. A missed competency is not a lost learning opportunity; it is a graduation and eligibility problem. Supervision rules are strict, and they exist for a reason

Until a student has documented competency in a procedure, it must be performed under direct supervision — a qualified technologist present in the room, reviewing the request, evaluating the patient's condition, and approving the image. After documented competency, the student may work under indirect supervision, with a technologist immediately available. Any repeat exposure must be under direct supervision regardless of competency status — this rule is absolute, is a JRCERT accreditation standard, and is the one most often violated by a student trying to be helpful. Repeating an exposure unsupervised delivers additional radiation dose to a patient without a qualified professional's judgment, and it is grounds for dismissal at most programs.

Credit values vary sharply across institutions — verify against your own program

Clinical education courses show more institutional variation than almost any other course type in Florida, because programs divide the same total clinical requirement into different numbers of courses. The same SCNS number can carry very different credit:

SCNS equivalency applies to the same number at the same level, never across numbers — and even where the number matches, the credit value and the clinical hours behind it may not. The first weeks involve learning to work while being watched, to ask for help without hesitating, and to keep positioning accurate while managing a person who is in pain.

Three habits separate students who thrive. Arrive early and stay useful — technologists notice, and the ones who like you will hand you procedures. Ask before acting, always — no one has ever been penalized for asking, and students have been dismissed for not asking. Take correction without defending yourself — clinical feedback is frequent, blunt, and not personal; the students who struggle are usually the ones who argue.
