Course Description
Medical Terminology for Radiographers introduces medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms through a word-building system, and applies them to the documents radiographers actually work from — radiographic orders and diagnostic reports.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, RTE is the Radiography prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 1 credit, offered summer, giving approximately 16 contact hours at the DSC radiography lecture convention evidenced by the published RTE2061 (1 credit / 16 hours) and RTE2613 (2 credits / 32 hours).
The applied framing is what distinguishes this from a general medical terminology course. A radiographer's terminology problem is specific: you receive an order written by someone else, and you must determine exactly what examination to perform, on which anatomy, on which side. Misreading it produces a wrong examination and an unnecessary radiation dose.

⚠ Build words; do not memorize them
The study strategy that makes a one-credit course with a large vocabulary manageable.
Medical terminology looks like thousands of unrelated words. It is a construction system with a few hundred components, and students who learn the components can decode terms they have never seen — which is what the job requires, since no course covers everything you will meet.
- Learn the affixes first. A small set carries most of the meaning: -itis inflammation, -ectomy removal, -ostomy a surgical opening, -otomy an incision, -osis a condition, -graphy the process of recording, -gram the record itself, -scopy visual examination.
- Note the ones that matter in imaging — the -graphy / -gram / -graph distinction is exactly the kind of precision a radiographer needs.
- Learn roots by body system, alongside the anatomy, rather than alphabetically.
- Read terms from the suffix backwards. Once that is automatic, unfamiliar terms decode themselves.
- Watch the pairs that differ by one letter — -otomy versus -ostomy, ilium versus ileum, hyper- versus hypo-. These are the clinically dangerous confusions and the ones examinations target.
- Spelling counts precisely. Medicine has genuine near-homophones with different meanings, and a misspelling in a report is a clinical error.
- Short daily sessions with spaced repetition, not weekend cramming. This is the textbook case for distributed practice.
Note the radiography-specific layer: positioning terminology is its own vocabulary — projections, body positions, and the relationship between them — and it is where the terminology course meets the procedures courses. Learning AP, PA, oblique, lateral, decubitus, and the rest properly now saves substantial confusion later.
⚠ Reading the order correctly is a patient safety function
The applied skill this course exists to build, and it carries more weight in radiography than in most terminology courses.
A radiographer acts on a written order and delivers ionizing radiation as a result. Misreading the order produces a wrong examination, an unnecessary dose, and a delay in the correct one.
- Laterality errors are the classic failure. Wrong-side imaging happens, and it is a serious event. Verify laterality against the order, the patient, and the clinical history, and mark images correctly — anatomical side markers are a legal and professional requirement, not a formality.
- Verify the patient with two identifiers, every time, and confirm the examination with the patient. Patients frequently know what they are there for, and a discrepancy is worth investigating.
- The clinical history on the order matters. It tells you why the examination is being done, which affects positioning, technique, and what the radiologist needs to see. An order with no history should prompt a question, not a guess.
- Never guess at an ambiguous order. Call the ordering provider. "I assumed they meant..." is not a defence, and providers expect these calls.
- Know the abbreviations that are prohibited and why — the Joint Commission "Do Not Use" list and the ISMP error-prone list exist because these abbreviations have caused patient harm, principally through medication errors but also through misread orders.
- Check pregnancy status where indicated, per your facility's policy. This is a radiation protection obligation.
- Screen for contraindications — contrast allergy, renal function, and implanted devices for cross-sectional imaging.
⚠ Read the report, and translate carefully for patients
Two connected skills the course names explicitly.
Reading diagnostic reports is how a radiographer learns. Following up on a case you imaged — what the radiologist saw, and whether your images demonstrated it — is the single best self-teaching habit available in this career, and it turns routine work into pattern recognition over time.
Translating for patients requires discipline about scope:
- Radiographers do not give diagnostic information. Patients ask what you saw, constantly and sympathetically. The answer is that the radiologist will interpret the images and their physician will discuss the results — every time, without exception, and regardless of how obvious a finding appears.
- Do not react visibly to an image. Patients read faces, and an expression can communicate a diagnosis you are not authorized to give.
- Explaining the procedure is entirely appropriate. What you are about to do, how long it takes, what they will feel, and why a position is required — this is good practice and it produces better images because patients cooperate.
- Use plain language. Health literacy research finds that clinicians systematically overestimate patient understanding. "We're taking a picture of your chest from the side" beats "lateral chest projection."
- Use a qualified interpreter, not a family member, for anything clinical. Language access is a legal requirement.
⚠ JRCERT, ARRT, and Florida licensure — the imaging pathway
- Graduation from a JRCERT-accredited programme is the standard route to ARRT certification eligibility in radiography. Accreditation is a gate rather than a quality signal; JRCERT publishes programme effectiveness data, and it is worth checking.
- The ARRT credential (R) is the primary qualification, and ARRT requires an associate degree or higher for certification.
- Florida licenses radiologic technologists through the Department of Health under Chapter 468, Part IV, Florida Statutes. Licensure is separate from certification and has its own application and fees.
- Post-primary credentials — computed tomography, magnetic resonance, mammography, vascular-interventional, and others — are how imaging careers advance, and each has its own clinical experience requirements.
- Continuing education is required for ARRT biennial renewal, and ARRT operates a structured continuing qualifications process.
Rule 11 applies — ARRT eligibility rules, JRCERT standards, and Florida licensure provisions change. Verify with each body directly.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
RTE1001 is 1 credit with an estimated 16 contact hours, offered summer at Daytona State. Assessment is by frequent quizzing — terminology courses are cumulative by nature — plus applied exercises interpreting orders and reports. It transfers on the ordinary lower-division basis, but note that radiography programmes are sequenced, cohort-based, and JRCERT-accredited as a whole, so individual course transfer into a programme is uncommon. A.S. degrees are applied and do not carry the A.A.'s junior-status guarantee.
