Course Description
PSY1012 – General Psychology is a 3-credit introductory survey of psychology as a
scientific discipline. It is among the highest-enrollment courses in Florida higher education, satisfies
general education social science requirements at essentially every institution, and serves as prerequisite to
most of the psychology curriculum and to courses in education, nursing, and criminal justice.
The course's organizing claim is that psychology is an empirical science rather than a
collection of opinions about human nature. Students who leave understanding how psychological claims are
tested — and why so many popular claims fail that test — have gotten the most from it.
Content surveys the major domains: research methods and why correlation does not
establish causation; biological bases of behavior including neurons, brain structure, and
the nervous and endocrine systems; sensation and perception;
consciousness including sleep and altered states; learning —
classical and operant conditioning and observational learning; memory, including its
reconstructive and fallible nature; cognition and language;
intelligence and its measurement and controversies; motivation and emotion;
development across the lifespan; personality theories;
social psychology — conformity, obedience, attribution, and group behavior;
stress and health; psychological disorders; and
treatment approaches and their evidence.
Good instruction treats the replication crisis honestly. A number of famous findings
taught in introductory psychology for decades have failed to replicate or have been substantially qualified,
and the discipline has responded with methodological reform. Students should encounter that as a sign of
science working rather than as an embarrassment concealed.
Offered at approximately 15 Florida institutions under this number and universally across the state under
this and closely related numbers.

Career Pathways
General Psychology is a foundation rather than an occupational course, but it gates a great deal and the
discipline's career structure is worth understanding early:
- Psychologist (SOC 19-3030 series) — requires a doctorate; Florida licensure through the Board of Psychology.
- Mental Health Counselor (SOC 21-1014) and Marriage and Family Therapist — master's degree plus Florida licensure.
- Social Worker (SOC 21-1021 series) — BSW or MSW pathways.
- School Psychologist — specialist or doctoral degree.
- Human Resources and Market Research — common bachelor's-level destinations.
- Behavior Analyst (BCBA) — a growing Florida field given autism service demand; requires a master's degree and certification.
- Case Manager and Human Services roles — accessible at the bachelor's level.
Worth stating plainly: a bachelor's degree in psychology does not qualify anyone to practice as a
psychologist or therapist in Florida or anywhere else. Students drawn to the helping professions
should map the graduate requirement early, and should know that counseling, social work, and behavior
analysis reach practice with a master's degree while psychology requires a doctorate.
Special Information
General education and transfer
PSY1012 satisfies a general education social science requirement at essentially every Florida institution
and transfers among Florida public institutions under SCNS. It is prerequisite to most of the psychology
curriculum and to courses in other fields — EDP2002 Educational Psychology commonly
requires it, as do developmental and abnormal psychology.
Course numbering
The course appears as PSY1012 and, at some institutions, PSY2012, and
under the titles General Psychology and Introduction to Psychology. SCNS equivalency applies
to the same number at the same level, so students transferring should confirm which number a receiving
program requires — PSY1012 and PSY2012 are different numbers.
Take the research methods material seriously even if the rest feels intuitive
The content most students find least engaging is the part that transfers furthest. Understanding what an
experiment establishes that a correlation does not, why control groups matter, and how sampling limits
generalization is the durable skill — it is what allows a person to evaluate a health claim, a policy
argument, or a news report about a study for the rest of their life. Instructors consistently identify this
as the unit students undervalue.
The replication crisis is part of the story now
Several findings taught as settled for decades — some famous studies among them — have failed
to replicate or been substantially qualified. Psychology responded with methodological reform: preregistration,
larger samples, open data, and replication studies. Students should understand this as science correcting
itself, and should be appropriately cautious about dramatic single-study findings, including in textbooks that
have not caught up.
Difficult subject matter and personal relevance
The units on psychological disorders, trauma, substance use, and suicide are academically necessary and
personally relevant to a substantial share of any class. Students sometimes recognize themselves or family
members in the material. Instructors generally handle it analytically and name resources; campus counseling
services and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are available, and self-diagnosis from an
introductory course is common and unreliable — a reason to consult a professional rather than a
textbook.
