Multidimensional Imaging and Expression covers digital photographic systems and aesthetics with a focus on production techniques and creative expression.

Special Information
⚠ Technique in service of intent — the failure mode is the reverse
- The predictable failure in a course like this is technically impressive work that means nothing. A flawlessly executed composite with no idea behind it is a demonstration, not a photograph.
- Start from the intent. What is this image for, what should a viewer feel or understand, and what does that require? Then select the technique. Choosing the technique first and finding a subject for it is backwards and it shows.
- Ask whether the multi-frame approach is necessary. HDR used because the scene needs it produces a photograph; HDR used because you learned HDR produces the characteristic over-processed look that dates immediately.
- Restraint reads as confidence. The most sophisticated composite work is frequently the work you do not notice is composited.
- Look at contemporary practice seriously. Knowing what is being made now — and being able to say how your work relates to it — is what this course means by expression.
- Be able to articulate the work. "I wanted to show X, so I did Y" is what a critique, a client, and a portfolio review all want to hear.
- Sustain a concept across a series. One striking constructed image is a technical exercise; twelve that build an idea is a body of work.
- Keep your process work. The plates, the sketches, and the rejected versions demonstrate development, and instructors assess it.
⚠ Multi-frame technique: get it right in camera or fix nothing later
- Multi-frame work depends on mechanical discipline at capture. Software cannot align frames that were not captured consistently.
- Lock everything for HDR and stacking — a sturdy tripod, manual focus, manual white balance, and fixed aperture. Vary only shutter speed for HDR; changing aperture changes depth of field between frames and the stack will not merge cleanly.
- Movement between frames is the enemy. Wind in foliage, water, and people create ghosting; shoot fast, use the software's deghosting where available, and accept that some scenes cannot be stacked.
- Panoramic capture needs the right rotation point. Rotating around the camera body rather than the lens's no-parallax point produces stitching errors that cannot be corrected afterwards, and a panoramic head exists for exactly this.
- Overlap generously — around a third between frames — and shoot in portrait orientation for a wider vertical field.
- Focus stacking requires small, consistent focus increments with adequate overlap of the in-focus zones, and it is far easier with a focus rail or in-camera bracketing.
- Shoot more frames than you think you need. Re-shooting a stack is expensive and often impossible.
- Composite plates must match. Light direction, quality, colour temperature, perspective, and focal length all have to be consistent — and the single most common tell in an unconvincing composite is mismatched light direction.
- Shoot the plates with the composite in mind. Planning the assembly before capture is what makes it work; assembling whatever you happened to shoot rarely does.
- Manage the files. Multi-frame projects generate very large numbers of files, and version control matters — see this repository's PGY1802C guide.
⚠ Constructed images raise rights questions that single frames do not
- Every element in a composite carries its own rights. A background from one source, a subject from another, and a texture from a third each need permission, and "I found it online" is not a licence.
- Stock licences have terms. Many restrict derivative use, commercial use, or use in certain contexts, and read the licence before you build a deliverable on it.
- Model releases must cover the actual use. A subject who agreed to a portrait has not agreed to appear in a constructed advertisement, and compositing a person into a context they did not consent to is both a legal and an ethical problem.
- Recognizable property, artwork, and trademarks in a composite can create issues in commercial use.
- Your own archive is your safest source, which is a practical argument for shooting your own plates and keeping them organized.
- Editorial and journalistic contexts prohibit this work entirely. A composite presented as a photograph of an event is a fabrication, and this is the clearest line in photographic ethics.
- Generative AI elements raise unsettled questions about copyright, authorship, and disclosure — the U.S. Copyright Office has issued guidance requiring human authorship, and litigation over training data is ongoing. Rule 11 applies with force.
- Disclose when asked and keep the source files. Being able to demonstrate what you made and where each element came from is the practical protection.
⚠ DSC publishes most PGY numbers without a C suffix — but these are studio courses
- Daytona State publishes the great majority of its photography courses unsuffixed, while the statewide inventory carries the C-suffixed form for several of them. Under SCNS the suffix is part of the course number and equivalency does not cross it, so these are formally distinct courses.
- The absence of a C suffix is not evidence of the absence of a laboratory. This repository has documented the same pattern in AFR3221, FSS1287, MUM1622, MUM2611, PGY1101, and PGY2650 — the suffix is a numbering convention, not a description of course structure.
- The lab fee is the reliable signal of a materials- and equipment-intensive course.
- This repository's contact-hour figure is an estimate for planning, benchmarked against the published PGY2801C (3 credits / 60 hours) at the same college.
- Read the section schedule. Studio and computer-laboratory courses meet more hours per week than their credit value implies, and out-of-class shooting and editing time is larger still.
- Expect a portfolio review as part of any transfer determination, and get the determination in writing.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
PGY2806 / PGY2806C is 4 credits and approximately 80 contact hours — the largest course in the DSC photography sequence — offered fall and spring with a $65 lab fee, prerequisite PGY1800 and corequisite PGY1802. Expect production shoots, complex post-production, critique, and a substantial portfolio deliverable, with out-of-class production and editing time well beyond the scheduled hours.
This is the course whose work should demonstrate range and voice together. Technical capability alone is now abundant; a portfolio that shows you can construct a difficult image and had a reason to is what distinguishes a graduate.
