Course Description
Digital Image Processing and Applications is a survey of current professional digital imaging and editing applications and techniques, asset management principles, and the Macintosh operating system. It introduces fundamental techniques for capture, workflow, library and collection development, and digital tools.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, PGY is the Photography prefix. Daytona State publishes this number unsuffixed as PGY1802 at 3 credits, offered all three terms — the widest availability in the prefix, which signals a foundational course the whole programme depends on. Special Information
⚠⚠ Asset management is the professional skill — and it is the one students skip
- A photographer who cannot find an image does not have it. Five years of unmanaged files is a liability, and reconstructing an archive is a project nobody completes.
- Set a naming convention in week one and keep it for your career. Date-based, with a job or project identifier, no spaces, and consistent. Retrofitting a convention across a decade of files is the single most common professional regret in this area.
- Fill in the metadata at ingest. Copyright, creator, and contact information belong in every file, and adding them later means opening every file again.
- Keyword consistently rather than exhaustively. A controlled vocabulary with fifty terms used consistently beats five hundred used haphazardly.
- Embedded copyright metadata is a practical protection. It travels with the file, it identifies you as the creator, and stripping it deliberately can carry legal consequences under provisions addressing copyright management information.
- Verify on ingest. Copy, verify checksums where the tool supports it, and only then format the card.
- Three copies, two different media, one offsite. Drives fail, and they fail without warning; ransomware and theft take the local copies together.
- Test your backups. An untested backup is a hypothesis. Restore something occasionally.
- Catalogues are databases and they can corrupt. Back up the catalogue as well as the images.
- Plan for format migration. Proprietary raw formats and applications do not last forever, and archives need periodic attention.
⚠ Colour management is invisible until it fails, and then it is expensive
- An uncalibrated display is the root of most colour problems. Files that look right on your screen and wrong everywhere else are a calibration failure, not a client's monitor problem.
- Calibrate regularly. Displays drift, and a profile from a year ago is not current.
- Understand the working space. Adobe RGB, sRGB, and ProPhoto RGB serve different purposes, and delivering a wide-gamut file to a client expecting sRGB produces washed-out colour on the web.
- Convert rather than assign when changing colour space, and know the difference — assigning the wrong profile changes the appearance without changing the numbers.
- Embed the profile in delivered files.
- Soft proofing predicts print output, and printing without it produces expensive surprises.
- Paper and ink matter. The same file prints differently on matte and glossy stock, and print profiles are specific to the printer, ink, and paper combination.
- Ambient light affects your judgement. Editing colour under changing daylight produces inconsistent decisions; a consistent, neutral viewing environment is a real professional practice.
- Ask the client for their specification — colour space, format, resolution, and profile — rather than guessing.
⚠ Editing ethics differ by context — and AI tools sharpened the question
- What is acceptable depends entirely on the use. Advertising permits extensive manipulation; editorial is constrained; photojournalism prohibits alteration of content outright.
- The journalistic standard is roughly "what a darkroom could do" — exposure, contrast, colour balance, and dodging and burning. Cloning content in or out is not permitted, and photographers have been dismissed publicly for a removed distraction.
- Generative fill and AI-based editing sit awkwardly across all of this. Removing a sensor spot is uncontroversial; extending a background is not obviously the same act; adding an element that was never there is clearly different. The acceptable line differs by context and is currently moving.
- Ask and disclose. If a client or publication has a policy, follow it; if they do not, ask and put the answer in writing.
- Keep the raw files. They are the evidence of what was captured, and in any authenticity dispute they are what you have.
- Content authenticity and provenance standards are developing to attach verifiable edit history to images. Rule 11 applies — this area is changing quickly.
- Retouching people raises separate questions, and some jurisdictions have introduced disclosure requirements for altered advertising imagery.
- Your instructor's policy governs your coursework. A processing course where AI does the processing teaches nothing, and using a prohibited tool is an integrity violation regardless of how much it helped.
⚠ DSC publishes most PGY numbers without a C suffix — but these are studio courses
- Daytona State publishes the great majority of its photography courses unsuffixed, while the statewide inventory carries the C-suffixed form for several of them. Under SCNS the suffix is part of the course number and equivalency does not cross it, so these are formally distinct courses.
- The absence of a C suffix is not evidence of the absence of a laboratory. This repository has documented the same pattern in AFR3221, FSS1287, MUM1622, MUM2611, PGY1101, and PGY2650 — the suffix is a numbering convention, not a description of course structure.
- The lab fee is the reliable signal of a materials- and equipment-intensive course.
- This repository's contact-hour figure is an estimate for planning, benchmarked against the published PGY2801C (3 credits / 60 hours) at the same college.
- Read the section schedule. Studio and computer-laboratory courses meet more hours per week than their credit value implies, and out-of-class shooting and editing time is larger still.
- Expect a portfolio review as part of any transfer determination, and get the determination in writing.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.

Build the workflow habits now, deliberately. The editing techniques will be relearned as applications change; the naming convention, the metadata discipline, and the backup routine are what you will still be using in twenty years, and they are almost impossible to adopt retroactively.
