Course Description
PGY1800C – Digital Photography is the introductory digital photography course in
the Florida photography curriculum. It carries several titles —
Digital Photography (Daytona State, Valencia, Tallahassee State),
Introduction to Digital Photography (Florida SouthWestern), and
Digital Art Photography 1 (Santa Fe) — and the C suffix reflects the required
studio and laboratory component.
The course teaches the camera and the digital workflow as a foundation: how a photograph is made
technically, and how the resulting file is managed, corrected, and output. It is designed for students with
no prior photographic training, including non-majors taking it as an elective, and it commonly serves as the
gateway into a photography certificate or A.S. program.

How Florida course levels actually affect transfer
Worth stating precisely, because the numbering is often misread. In Florida's Statewide Course Numbering
System the first digit denotes the year in which the course is normally offered —
1 for the first year, 2 for the second, 3 for the third, 4 for the fourth — not how well it transfers.
- 1000- and 2000-level courses transfer transparently between Florida public institutions.
The difference between them is not a transfer barrier.
- The boundary that matters is lower division to upper division. Taking a
2000-level course toward a 3000-level requirement is the problematic step.
- 3000 to 4000 transfers without difficulty — both are upper division.
- PSAV (0-level) courses do not transfer as college credit at all; that pathway runs
through articulation agreements rather than transfer.
Separately from transfer, SCNS equivalency is keyed to the course number. A program that
requires a specific number is satisfied by that number from any participating institution. A
different number with similar content still transfers as credit, but the receiving program decides
whether it fills that particular requirement or counts as elective credit — a curriculum question to
settle with an advisor, not a barrier to the credit transferring.
⚠ PGY1800C and PGY2801C are different courses at different levels
Worth stating clearly, because the titles invite confusion. PGY1800C is the
1000-level introductory course, emphasizing camera operation, optical principles, and
foundational digital workflow. PGY2801C – Digital Photography I is a
2000-level course that integrates photographic technique with substantial digital darkroom
work, typically in Photoshop. Some institutions offer both; others carry only one as their introductory
offering. Both are lower division and transfer transparently; but a program that names PGY2801C specifically is asking for that course, so confirm which number your program requires. Related numbers include
PGY1801C (Advanced Digital Photography at Florida SouthWestern). Confirm which number your
program or receiving institution requires.
Credits vary from 3 to 4
Florida institutions differ, with the course carried at 3 credits at most and 4 at some. Studio contact
hours exceed what the credit line suggests in either case, since the course meets for extended studio
sessions and requires shooting time outside class. Verify locally.
Ask about a loaner camera before buying one
Most programs require a camera with full manual control — independent aperture,
shutter, and ISO. A phone will not satisfy the assignments. Before purchasing, check whether the program
maintains a loaner pool; many Florida programs do, and a used older DSLR meets every
requirement of an introductory course at a small fraction of new-body cost. Spending heavily before knowing
whether photography suits you is the most common mistake students make here.
Back up your work from week one
Every term, students lose a project to a failed card, a lost drive, or an overwritten folder, and a shoot
that no longer exists cannot be recovered. Adopt a real practice immediately: card, working drive, and a
second copy elsewhere. Studios treat this as a professional obligation, and forming the habit is part of what
the course should teach.
Critique is the pedagogy and it improves your eye faster than shooting does
Studio courses are built around public discussion of work. Students who engage seriously —
including in critiquing classmates, which is where most of the learning happens — improve markedly
faster than those who present and stay silent. The convention is to describe before judging and to be
specific.
Free software makes this practicable outside the lab
Adobe's Photography plan is inexpensive and campus labs generally provide access, but students who want to
work at home without a subscription should know that Darktable and
RawTherapee handle RAW processing capably and GIMP covers most introductory
Photoshop tasks. Instructors vary on whether assignments may be completed in alternative software —
ask early rather than assuming.
