Course Description
Principles of Athletic Training is an introductory course covering foundational topics in athletic training, including career pathways, legal considerations, physical conditioning, equipment and emergency response protocols, injury assessment, recovery procedures, and medication information.

The catalog lists career pathways first, and that ordering is worth taking seriously, because the pathway into this profession has changed and students plan around outdated information. Its content is genuinely valuable to coaches, physical education teachers, fitness professionals, and anyone supervising athletes — but it is an introduction to the field, not a step onto the licensure ladder by itself.
Daytona State does not publish a lecture and laboratory split for this course. It is an unsuffixed lecture course, and the institution's lecture convention is 15 contact hours per credit — PSY1012, AMH2010 and GEB1011 are all live at 3 credits and 45 hours. This course is priced at that convention.

⚠⚠ Athletic training is a licensed profession — and the entry pathway has changed
- ⚠⚠ Entry to the athletic training profession now requires a master's degree from a CAATE-accredited programme. The bachelor's-level route that many people remember has been phased out, and students planning on the basis of older information are regularly caught by this.
- Certification is through the Board of Certification, and eligibility depends on graduating from a CAATE-accredited programme — check accreditation before enrolling anywhere, the same unrecoverable trap this repository records for CAPTE, CAAHEP, ACOTE, CoARC, JRCERT, CIDA and ABET.
- ⚠ Florida licenses athletic trainers under Chapter 468, Part XIII, Florida Statutes, through the Department of Health. Practising or holding yourself out as an athletic trainer without a licence is an offence.
- ⚠⚠ This course does not make you an athletic trainer and does not authorise you to act as one. It gives a coach, teacher, or fitness professional the knowledge to recognise problems, respond in an emergency, and know when to refer — which is genuinely valuable and is a different thing.
- Know the limits of your role. Recognising a possible concussion and removing an athlete is within anyone's competence; evaluating, diagnosing, and clearing an athlete to return is not.
- Hold current CPR, AED, and first aid certification if you work with athletes in any capacity.
- If athletic training is your goal, plan the whole pathway now — the prerequisite science courses for an accredited master's programme should be built into your undergraduate plan from the start.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies. Verify current requirements with CAATE, the BOC, and the Florida Board rather than relying on this guide.
⚠⚠ Exertional heat stroke — the preventable killer, and Florida is where it happens
- Exertional heat stroke is among the leading causes of sudden death in sport, and it is essentially always survivable when recognised and treated promptly. Florida's climate makes this the single most important safety content for anyone supervising athletes here.
- ⚠⚠ The diagnostic signs are core temperature and central nervous system dysfunction. Confusion, irrational behaviour, aggression, staggering, or collapse in a hot-weather athlete is heat stroke until proven otherwise — and the athlete may still be sweating, which misleads people constantly.
- ⚠⚠ Cool first, transport second. The evidence is unambiguous: immediate whole-body cold-water immersion, on site, before transport, produces survival; delaying cooling to move the athlete costs lives. Survival depends on how fast core temperature comes down, not on how fast an ambulance arrives.
- Have the tub, the ice, and the water ready before practice starts in hot conditions. It cannot be improvised when needed.
- ⚠ The highest-risk athlete is the unacclimatised one in the first days of practice, and heat acclimatisation guidelines exist for that reason. Early-season football practice in Florida is the classic scenario.
- Modify or cancel activity based on measured conditions, not judgement — wet bulb globe temperature accounts for humidity in a way air temperature does not, and Florida's humidity is the reason our conditions are more dangerous than the thermometer suggests.
- Ensure hydration access and rest breaks, and never use exercise or water restriction as punishment.
- Have a written emergency action plan for every venue, rehearse it, and make sure everyone knows who calls 911 and where the AED is.
- ⚠ Sudden cardiac arrest is the other one. A collapsed, unresponsive athlete is in cardiac arrest until proven otherwise — start compressions and get the AED; brief seizure-like movements are common in cardiac arrest and are frequently mistaken for a seizure.
⚠⚠ Concussion — when in doubt, sit them out
- A concussion is a brain injury. It does not require loss of consciousness, it frequently does not, and an athlete can walk, talk, and appear normal while concussed.
- ⚠ Remove any athlete with suspected concussion from play immediately, and do not allow return the same day. Florida law requires removal and medical clearance for youth athletes, and school and league policies apply on top of it.
- ⚠⚠ The reason for the rule is second impact syndrome — a second head injury before the first has resolved can produce catastrophic, sometimes fatal brain swelling. This is why "he says he's fine" is not a basis for a decision.
- Athletes under-report symptoms deliberately. They want to play, and they know what answers get them back on the field — which means the decision cannot rest on self-report alone.
- Know the red flags requiring emergency transport: worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizure, unequal pupils, increasing confusion, weakness or numbness, or deteriorating consciousness.
- Return to play is a graduated, supervised progression after medical clearance, and return to learn matters too — concentration and screen tolerance are affected, and academic accommodation is frequently needed.
- Only a qualified healthcare professional clears an athlete. Not a coach, not a parent, and not the athlete.
- ⚠ Document everything — the mechanism, the observations, the removal, and the clearance.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies — concussion protocols and Florida's youth athlete requirements have changed and continue to; follow current law and current league policy.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
