1 credit hours 45 contact hours Prerequisites: UWF publishes: BSC 2011/L AND PCB 4723*. The asterisk means the lecture may be taken before or in the same term. Both a Material and Supply Fee and an Equipment Fee are assessed. UWF states in the catalog that the course requires the use of living animals, in most cases invertebrates — see the guide before registering. Offered concurrently with the graduate PCB5727L. Hours derived at 45 per credit for science laboratories. v1.0

Course Description

Comparative Animal Physiology Laboratory covers general and comparative animal physiologycomplex structures, phenomena, and concepts involved in the regulation of a variety of physiological mechanisms. UWF publishes that a Material and Supply Fee and an Equipment Fee will be assessed, and that the laboratory requires the use of living animals, in most cases invertebrates.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, PCB is the Process Biology prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 1 semester hour through the Department of Biology, College of Science and Engineering. It is offered at approximately 3 Florida institutions.

⚠⚠ This is the only course found so far in this catalog whose published description contains an ethical statement about how organisms are to be treated. UWF sets out, in the catalog itself, that living animals are used, that they are to be handled carefully and treated ethically, and that experiments are designed for maximal educational value with minimal insult and stress. Read the full note below before registering.

Physiology is a measurement discipline, and this is where that becomes real. Recording a nerve impulse, a heart rate, an oxygen consumption or a muscle twitch teaches something a lecture cannot: living preparations are noisy, variable, and time-limited, and getting clean data from one is a skill.

⚠ Two fees are assessed here, a Material and Supply Fee and an Equipment Fee — more than the single fee on most PCB laboratories, and consistent with a course that runs instrumentation.

⚠ The contact-hour figure is derived — the University of West Florida publishes none

UWF's catalog publishes a credit value in semester hours, the college and department, prerequisites and co-requisites, and fee notices. It does not publish contact hours, a lecture and laboratory split, or terms of offering for any course. Every contact-hour value in a UWF guide in this repository is derived. The figure applies the convention established for science laboratories at UWF — 45 contact hours for 1 semester hour, matching the live EVR2001L and OCE1001L rather than the 30 used for allied-health teaching laboratories. A 1-credit science laboratory meeting three hours a week across a fifteen-week term reaches 45, which is the usual shape. Confirm the meeting schedule with the department.

How Florida course levels affect transfer

The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For biology the specific transfer hazard is the split-versus-integrated question: UWF numbers lecture and laboratory separately where many institutions use one C course, and SCNS equivalency does not cross numbers. Carry a syllabus, and expect a transfer evaluation of either half to be done by hand.

PCB4723L is 1 semester hour at the University of West Florida.
