Course Description
Introduction to Human Anatomy is a comprehensive examination of human anatomy, in which the relationship between structure and function forms a continuing theme within both lecture and laboratory. UWF states the course is designed for students who intend to pursue a professional degree in health related fields, and that a Material and Supply Fee will be assessed.

- The anatomy text and atlas the instructor assigns — note that a text and an atlas do different jobs. Netter's and Rohen's photographic atlas are the two that students consistently report as worth the money, Rohen especially because it shows real specimens rather than illustrations.
- The laboratory models and specimens, in person, repeatedly — free with your enrolment and the single highest-value study resource in this course. Find out the open laboratory hours in week one and use them.
- Complete Anatomy, Visible Body, or Kenhub — paid, though student pricing and institutional licences are common — check with the UWF library before buying; 3D rotation genuinely helps with spatial relationships that flat images obscure.
- Anatomy Standard and the BodyParts3D atlas — free; usable open alternatives if the commercial applications are out of budget.
- Drawing structures from memory and self-testing — free, and the study method with the best evidence behind it for material of this kind. Recognising a labelled diagram is not the same as knowing it.

- In the Florida Statewide Course Numbering System, an L suffix normally marks a laboratory-only course, typically one semester hour attached to a separate lecture.
- ⚠⚠ This course is three semester hours, and UWF's own description says the structure-function theme runs "within both lecture and laboratory." It is an integrated lecture-and-laboratory course carrying an L suffix — functionally what a C suffix denotes elsewhere.
- This is worth understanding generally, not just here. SCNS offers institutions a limited set of suffix options, and departments frequently have to fit a real course into the nearest available designation. The suffix records an administrative choice; the description records the course. When they disagree, believe the description.
- ⚠ The practical consequences: this is a full three-credit workload, not a one-credit laboratory attached to something else; there is no separate lecture course to enrol in; and a receiving institution comparing suffixes rather than reading the description may misjudge it. Respect for anatomical donors, where cadaveric material is used
- UWF's catalog entry does not state whether this course uses cadaveric material, and practice varies between institutions and between terms. The instructor's first-day briefing is authoritative.
- Where human anatomical material is used, it comes from people who chose to donate their bodies to education. Every institution that runs such a laboratory has strict rules on conduct, photography and confidentiality. Follow them exactly; violations are treated as serious.
- ⚠ Some students find the laboratory difficult, and that is normal and worth planning for. Tell the instructor privately rather than avoiding the sessions, and use UWF Counseling and Psychological Services if you need to — it is a free student service.
⚠⚠ Biology laboratory safety
- Know the location of the eyewash, safety shower, fire extinguisher and spill kit before you start work. That is a real instruction rather than a formality.
- ⚠ Eye protection and a lab coat are required, closed shoes are required, and never eat, drink or store food in a laboratory.
- Microbiological work is conducted at the containment level the organism requires, and ⚠ cultures are never opened outside the appropriate containment. Everything is autoclaved or disinfected before disposal.
- ⚠⚠ Human tissue, blood and body fluids are handled under Standard Precautions and are treated as infectious regardless of source. Sharps go into a sharps container at the point of use, and needles are never recapped by hand.
- Chemical hazards are real in a molecular laboratory — some nucleic acid stains and fixatives are mutagenic or carcinogenic, and phenol and chloroform cause chemical burns. Read the safety data sheet before first use, not after.
- ⚠ Ultraviolet transilluminators cause eye and skin burns; use the shield.
- Report every spill, cut and exposure immediately, however minor it seems.
- Tell the instructor if you are pregnant or immunocompromised; several standard laboratory materials and organisms warrant substitution.

How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For biology the specific transfer hazard is the split-versus-integrated question: UWF numbers lecture and laboratory separately where many institutions use one C course, and SCNS equivalency does not cross numbers. Carry a syllabus, and expect a transfer evaluation of either half to be done by hand.
