Keyboarding develops touch keyboarding on a computer keyboard — typing by muscle memory without looking at the keys — with attention to speed, accuracy, and technique. Daytona State's description is explicit about the audience: the course is designed for all students who are or will be using a personal or business computer, which is to say it is not a specialist office course but a general competency course.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, OST is the Office Systems Technology prefix. OST1141 is a 1-credit introductory course offered fall, spring, and summer at Daytona State with no prerequisite. It appears at approximately four Florida institutions. It is distinct from the larger document-processing courses in the same prefix — this repository carries OST1100C and OST1110C at 3 credits and 60 hours, which cover formatting, document production, and software in addition to keyboarding.
The honest framing: this is a small course teaching a single physical skill that most students believe they already have. Career Pathways
Keyboarding is a prerequisite competency rather than an occupation, and this guide should be honest about that. No one is hired as a keyboardist. What the skill does is enable and accelerate other work:
- Administrative and office support — where keyboarding speed is still frequently tested at hiring, and where the OST1100C/OST1110C document processing courses are the real preparation.
- Data entry and records processing — where measured speed and accuracy standards genuinely apply.
- Medical and legal transcription and scribing — among the few roles where high keying speed is directly compensated.
- Customer service and contact centre work — typing while speaking is the actual job requirement.
- Any role involving substantial writing — programming, journalism, research, healthcare documentation. Touch typing does not appear on the job description and materially affects how much work gets done.

⚠ Career honesty: keyboarding alone is no longer a credential
Worth saying plainly. There was a period when "typing" was itself a marketable qualification. That period is over — near-universal computer use means basic keyboarding is assumed rather than credentialed, and the standalone typing job has largely disappeared.
What remains true, and is the honest case for the course:
- Speed and accuracy are still tested at hiring for administrative, data entry, and contact centre roles, and employers do set minimums.
- Touch typing has a real compounding effect on anyone who writes for a living. The gain is not only speed but attention: a person who types by touch composes while typing, while a person hunting for keys is spending cognitive effort on the mechanics.
- The ceiling is the reason to take it. Self-taught hunt-and-peck typists usually plateau well below what touch typing reaches, and the plateau is invisible to them because their speed feels sufficient.
The corresponding advice: if your goal is office employment, this course alone is not the qualification — the document processing, software applications, and records management courses in the same prefix are what employers actually want. Take this as the foundation under those, not as a substitute.
⚠ Relearning correct technique will make you slower before it makes you faster
This is the practical warning students most need and are least often given. Most people entering this course already type at some speed using a self-taught method. Converting to proper touch technique temporarily reduces speed, often substantially, and it feels like going backward.
Students who abandon the method at that point retain their plateau permanently. Those who work through it — typically a matter of weeks — pass their old speed and continue improving. Instructors know this; students should hear it in week one rather than discovering it in week three and concluding they are bad at the course.
Two related points on method. Accuracy first, then speed — drilling fast with errors trains the errors, and correcting them later is harder than learning them right. And short, frequent practice beats long sessions: fifteen minutes daily produces better results than two hours weekly, because motor learning consolidates with repetition over time.
⚠ Ergonomics: the injuries are real and they are cumulative
Repetitive strain injuries from keyboard work — carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and neck and shoulder problems — develop slowly and are difficult to reverse once established. Students in a one-credit course reasonably assume this is boilerplate; it is the content most likely to matter across a forty-year working life spent at a keyboard.
The practices that actually reduce risk:
- Keep wrists neutral and floating, not resting on the desk edge or bent upward. A wrist rest is for pauses, not for typing.
- Elbows at roughly 90 degrees, with the keyboard at or slightly below elbow height. Most desks are too high, which is why chair height and keyboard trays matter.
- Feet flat, back supported, screen at eye level — neck flexion from a low screen is the source of much "typing" pain that has nothing to do with the hands.
- Take breaks and vary posture. Static loading over hours is the mechanism; brief, frequent movement interrupts it.
- Light touch. Pounding the keys adds force to every keystroke over a career. Modern keyboards require very little pressure.

⚠ Does it count toward your degree?
An advising point specific to small skills courses. A 1-credit course may or may not apply to a particular degree, and institutions frequently cap the number of such credits that count. Three things to check before registering:
- Whether it applies to your program at all, or is elective credit only.
- Whether it transfers usefully. Skills courses are among the least reliably transferable credits, and a course that counts at your college may become unassigned elective credit elsewhere.
- Whether the larger course is the better choice. If you need office skills for a program or a job, OST1100C (Keyboarding and Document Processing) covers this material plus document formatting and software at 3 credits — often the better use of the tuition.
Course format, credits, and contact hours
Daytona State publishes OST1141 at 1 credit, offered fall, spring, and summer with no prerequisite. The 15 contact hours given here follows the standard one-credit convention; note that Broward's closest analogue, OST1103C "Basic Keyboarding," is 1 credit at 16 contact hours under a sixteen-week convention, so institutions will differ by a small margin. Confirm on your syllabus.
Substantial practice outside scheduled hours is expected regardless of the contact-hour figure — the skill is built by repetition, not by class attendance. Assessment is by timed writing: measured words per minute against a maximum error count, with a defined minimum standard for the grade. Many sections are self-paced or online, which suits the subject well provided the student actually practises daily.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
