Course Description

Transformational Nursing Leadership focuses on leadership development that is essential for nursing practice. The student explores personal growth, expands professional knowledge, and practices leadership in varied contexts, with emphasis on the development of the nurse as a leader who is proficient in asserting influence in professional and personal leadership growth.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, NUR is the Nursing prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 3 semester hours through the Department of Nursing, College of Health.

Leadership in nursing is not primarily about holding a management post. A bedside nurse who challenges an unsafe order, coordinates a resuscitation, or changes how a unit does handovers is exercising leadership without any title at all — and "asserting influence", the phrase UWF uses, is a more accurate description of the work than "management" would be. Transformational leadership specifically is the model behind Magnet recognition, which is why it appears by name.

⚠ The contact-hour figure is derived — the University of West Florida publishes none

UWF's catalog publishes a credit value in semester hours, the college and department, prerequisites and co-requisites where they exist, and a description. It does not publish contact hours, a lecture and laboratory split, or terms of offering for any course. Every contact-hour value in a UWF guide in this repository is therefore derived. The figure here applies the standard lecture convention of 15 contact hours per credit, giving 45 hours for 3 semester hours. Confirm the meeting schedule with the department. ⚠ Note that UWF publishes no fee notice and no "permission is required" marking anywhere in the NUR prefix, which distinguishes it from other health prefixes in this catalog.

How Florida course levels affect transfer

The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For nursing the far more important constraint is programmatic: courses are sequenced within an approved programme, tied to clinical placement capacity, and connected to NCLEX-RN eligibility — so transferring individual nursing courses between programmes frequently is not possible even where the credit articulates. Ask the receiving programme before assuming anything.
