Course Description
NUR4169C – Evidence Based Practice: Nursing Research is a 3-credit upper-division
nursing course on how nursing knowledge is produced, evaluated, and put into practice. It is a standard
requirement in RN-to-BSN completion programs, which Florida state colleges offer widely,
and it is frequently the course that most distinguishes BSN preparation from associate degree preparation.
The premise is that nursing practice should rest on evidence rather than on tradition, authority, or
convenience — and that a great deal of routine practice does not. The course does not train students to
conduct research; it trains them to read it competently, judge whether a finding is strong
enough to change what they do, and participate in implementing change on a unit.
Content covers the research process and how nursing science is generated;
evidence-based practice models — the Iowa Model, the Johns Hopkins model, and the
steps common to them; asking answerable questions using the PICO framework;
literature searching in CINAHL, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library;
levels of evidence and the evidence hierarchy, including why systematic reviews sit at the
top and expert opinion at the bottom; quantitative designs — experimental,
quasi-experimental, and non-experimental, with attention to what each can and cannot establish;
qualitative designs — phenomenology, grounded theory, and ethnography, and the
questions they answer that trials cannot; sampling, measurement,
reliability and validity; basic statistics for reading results —
descriptive measures, significance, confidence intervals, and effect size;
critical appraisal of published studies; research ethics — informed
consent, IRB review, vulnerable populations, and the historical abuses that produced current protections;
translating evidence into practice and the barriers that stop it; and
dissemination.

Special Information
Why the BSN matters, and why this course is the reason
Associate degree preparation is heavily clinical; BSN preparation adds leadership, community health,
and this — the ability to evaluate evidence. That is the substantive difference, not merely an
additional credential. It matters practically because Magnet-designated hospitals and many
Florida health systems prefer or require BSN preparation for hiring and advancement, and because charge
nurse, management, education, and any graduate pathway assume it. Florida state colleges offer RN-to-BSN
completion at comparatively low cost, and this course is usually where students find out whether they enjoy
the analytical side of nursing.
⚠ Upper-division standing and program admission
The 4000-level number means upper-division coursework within a BSN program. It requires
admission to that program — typically an active, unencumbered Florida RN license for
RN-to-BSN students — and is not open to general enrollment. A.S. nursing graduates should note that
their ADN credits transfer into the BSN under Florida's articulation arrangements, but the upper-division
nursing courses must be completed in the BSN program. Verify the specific pathway with the program, since
RN-to-BSN structures vary in length and delivery.
Statistics is not optional here, and most students underestimate it
Nurses frequently arrive expecting a reading course and find that appraising a study requires
understanding what a p-value does and does not mean, why a confidence interval is more informative, and why
a statistically significant result can be clinically trivial. That last distinction —
statistical significance versus clinical significance — is the single most useful
idea in the course. A 2 mmHg blood pressure reduction can be highly significant in a large trial and
irrelevant at the bedside. Students who take the statistics content seriously read the literature very
differently afterward.
Learn to distinguish research, EBP, and quality improvement
These are routinely confused and have different purposes, methods, and oversight requirements.
Research generates new generalizable knowledge and requires IRB review. EBP
applies existing evidence to a practice setting. Quality improvement tests changes in a
local system to improve care there. A project's classification determines whether IRB approval is needed,
which nurses encounter directly when proposing unit-level projects. Getting this wrong causes real
administrative problems.
Use the librarian — database searching is a taught skill
Most students search databases the way they search the open web, and get poor results. Controlled
vocabulary, Boolean logic, filters, and citation chaining are learnable in a single session with a
librarian, and the difference in search quality is substantial. This is the highest-return hour available in
the course.
Course numbering and configuration
The course appears as NUR4169 and NUR4169C; where the
C suffix appears it generally reflects an applied evidence-based practice project component
rather than a clinical laboratory schedule, so the contact hours track a standard 3-credit course. Related

same number at the same level, never across numbers — verify what a receiving program requires.
