Mental Health Nursing

NUR3505 — NUR3505
← Course Modules
3 credit hours 45 contact hours Prerequisites: UWF publishes: NUR3026/L AND NUR3095 AND NUR3125 AND NUR3138 — the entire first block. It is taken inside a co-requisite block with NUR3215, NUR3215L, NUR3505, NUR3505L, NUR3805 and NUR3871, so a student enrols in the whole block for the term. Because the block shares one prerequisite set, a single failed course delays the whole next block by a cohort year. UWF publishes no contact hours or terms; hours derived. v1.0

Course Description

Mental Health Nursing develops students' competencies in examining the constructs of mental health and mental illness, focusing on restoring and maintaining the well-being of individuals with acute and chronic mental health issues.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, NUR is the Nursing prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 3 semester hours through the Department of Nursing, College of Health.

Mental health nursing is the specialism where the therapeutic relationship is the intervention. Elsewhere communication supports the clinical work; here it largely is the clinical work, and the skills are specific and learnable rather than a matter of being a naturally sympathetic person. Students frequently arrive expecting this to be the easy rotation and find it the most demanding one, because there is no task to hide behind.

⚠⚠⚠ This course is part of a CO-REQUISITE BLOCK — you enrol in the whole block

⚠⚠ UWF appears to run two parallel routes through nursing — check which one you are in

⚠ The contact-hour figure is derived — the University of West Florida publishes none

UWF's catalog publishes a credit value, the college and department, prerequisites and co-requisites, and a description. It does not publish contact hours, a lecture and clinical split, or terms of offering for any course. Every contact-hour value in a UWF guide in this repository is derived. The figure applies the standard lecture convention of 15 contact hours per credit, giving 45 hours for 3 semester hours. UWF publishes no fee notice and no "permission is required" marking anywhere in the NUR prefix.

How Florida course levels affect transfer

The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For nursing the far more important constraint is programmatic: courses are sequenced within an approved programme, tied to clinical placement capacity, and connected to NCLEX-RN eligibility — so transferring individual nursing courses between programmes frequently is not possible even where the credit articulates. Ask the receiving programme before assuming anything.

NUR3505 is 3 semester hours at the University of West Florida.
