Course Description
NUR3145 – Pharmacology is a 3-credit, 45-contact-hour upper-division nursing course
covering the drug therapy a nurse administers, monitors, and teaches. It appears in both prelicensure BSN
curricula and RN-to-BSN programs, and is a required course in essentially every Florida baccalaureate
nursing program.
The course is built on two foundations. Pharmacokinetics — absorption, distribution,
metabolism, and excretion — explains what the body does to a drug. Pharmacodynamics
explains what the drug does to the body: receptor interaction, mechanism of action, and dose-response
relationships. Everything else follows from these, which is why students who treat the course as
memorization struggle and those who learn the mechanisms do not.
From there the course works systematically through the major drug classifications — cardiovascular,
respiratory, neurologic, psychiatric, endocrine, anti-infective, analgesic, gastrointestinal, and
chemotherapeutic agents — examining for each the mechanism, therapeutic use, adverse effects, contraindications,
interactions, and the specific nursing implications: what to assess before administering, what to monitor
after, and what to teach the patient.
Two threads run throughout. Safe medication administration is treated as the practical
core of the course, since medication error is among the most common and most preventable sources of patient
harm. And lifespan variation — how drug handling differs in neonates, children,
pregnancy, and older adults — is integrated rather than isolated, because dosing errors concentrate at
the extremes of age.

Special Information
Prerequisites
Prerequisites vary and are program-driven; verify locally. Admission to the nursing program is the
universal requirement. Beyond that, institutions commonly require anatomy and physiology (BSC2085/BSC2086),
microbiology (MCB2010), and often chemistry, with a minimum grade of C. Seminole State lists NUR3825 as a
prerequisite or corequisite. Prelicensure programs typically place this course in the first or second nursing
semester; RN-to-BSN programs may waive or substitute it for students whose ADN covered the content.
Course-title variation across Florida
This SCNS number carries a wide range of local titles: Pharmacology, Pharmacology for Nursing
Practice (FAMU), Pharmacology in Nursing Practice (USF), Pharmacologic Basis (FIU), and
Pharmacology and Alternative Therapeutics (Florida SouthWestern) among them. Under SCNS the courses
are equivalent at the same level regardless of title, but the FSW title signals a genuine difference in
emphasis — that section integrates complementary and nutritional therapies more substantially than most.
Students comparing programs should read the description, not just the title.
Position in the curriculum
Pharmacology is foundational to medical-surgical nursing and every subsequent clinical course. Programs
generally require it early and often require a minimum grade to progress. It is also heavily represented on
the NCLEX-RN, where pharmacological and parenteral therapies constitute a substantial content
category.
Dosage calculation competency
Many Florida nursing programs require a separate dosage calculation examination with a
high passing threshold — frequently 90% or above, sometimes 100% — independent of the course grade,
and often with a limited number of attempts. Students should confirm their program's policy early, because
failing it can halt progression regardless of overall performance.
Difficulty and study approach
Pharmacology is widely regarded as one of the hardest courses in a nursing curriculum, and the reason is
volume: hundreds of drugs, each with mechanisms, effects, and nursing implications. The students who do well
generally learn by drug class rather than individual drug — understanding what beta
blockers do as a class makes the individual agents largely predictable — and connect each drug back to
the underlying pathophysiology. Rote memorization of drug lists scales poorly and is the most common failure
pattern. Plan sustained weekly study rather than pre-exam cramming.
