Course Description
Introduction to Nursing is an introductory course focused on pre-licensure nursing students to aid in fostering academic readiness, personal resilience, and professional identity. Through interactive seminars and skill-building activities, students develop time management and study strategies, learn to calculate and monitor academic performance, and explore techniques to enhance sleep hygiene and stress management. Emphasis falls on introduction to advising and curriculum navigation, and cultivation of critical habits such as self-care, accountability, and professionalism.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, NUR is the Nursing prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 1 semester hour through the Department of Nursing, College of Health.
⚠⚠ This is the one standalone NUR course that names its audience explicitly: "pre-licensure nursing students." That single phrase places it in the pre-licensure route rather than in a degree-completion one, and it is the clearest evidence in the whole prefix that UWF is running two distinct populations through it. A student who is already a licensed nurse is not the audience for this course.
Courses like this are easy to dismiss and are among the better-evidenced interventions in nursing education. Attrition in pre-licensure nursing programmes is substantial, and it is driven less by academic inability than by workload shock, poor study strategy, and the absence of a plan for sleep and stress in a programme that is genuinely gruelling. The content here — monitoring your own academic performance, navigating advising, building self-care habits before you need them — is aimed squarely at that, and one semester hour is a small price for it.
⚠⚠ UWF appears to run two parallel routes through nursing — check which one you are in
- UWF's NUR prefix divides cleanly into two groups, and the division is visible in the prerequisites. One group is a tightly chained cohort sequence — NUR3026/L, NUR3095, NUR3125, NUR3138C, then NUR3215/L, NUR3505/L, NUR3805, NUR3871, then NUR4169, NUR4216/L, NUR4445/L, then NUR4257/L, NUR4615/L, NUR4636L, NUR4827 — where each block carries the previous block as a prerequisite and its own members as co-requisites. The other group carries no prerequisites and no co-requisites at all.
- ⚠⚠ The two groups cover overlapping subjects under different numbers. The pairing is systematic:
- NUR3081 Professional Nursing Practice and NUR3805 Professional Nursing Practice — identical titles, different numbers, different routes.
- NUR4125 Pathophysiology and NUR3125 Pathophysiology for Nurses.
- NUR3145 Pharmacology and NUR3095 Introduction to Pharmacology.
- NUR3067 Health Assessment and Promotion and NUR3138C Health Assessment and Promotion in Nursing.
- NUR4826 Transformational Nursing Leadership and NUR4827 Leadership in Nursing.
- NUR4636 Epidemiology and Population Health Strategies and NUR4615 Person Centered Population Health.
- ⚠⚠⚠ The most likely reading is a pre-licensure programme alongside a degree-completion route for nurses who are already licensed, which is the standard structure of a nursing department offering both. That is an inference from the course structure, not a statement UWF makes — the catalog nowhere uses the words "RN to BSN" or "registered nurse", and it is recorded here as an inference precisely because the consequence of guessing wrong is a wasted term.
- ⚠ Do not choose between paired courses by what fits your timetable. Ask the Department of Nursing which sequence your programme requires, and note that a chained course taken out of sequence will be blocked by its prerequisites while a standalone one will not — which makes it easy to enrol in the wrong one without being stopped.
⚠ The contact-hour figure is derived — the University of West Florida publishes none
UWF's catalog publishes a credit value in semester hours, the college and department, prerequisites and co-requisites where they exist, and a description. It does not publish contact hours, a lecture and laboratory split, or terms of offering for any course. Every contact-hour value in a UWF guide in this repository is therefore derived. The figure here applies the standard lecture convention of 15 contact hours per credit, giving 15 hours for 1 semester hour. Confirm the meeting schedule with the department. ⚠ Note that UWF publishes no fee notice and no "permission is required" marking anywhere in the NUR prefix, which distinguishes it from other health prefixes in this catalog.

Resources & Tools
- Your programme's curriculum plan and progression policy — the most important document you will read this term, and the one students most often skip.
- UWF advising and the Department of Nursing — included in enrolment; use advising early and repeatedly rather than when something has already gone wrong.
- UWF Counseling and Psychological Services — available to enrolled students at no additional charge, and a resource rather than a last resort.
- NCSBN NCLEX-RN test plan — free; reading it in your first term tells you what the whole programme is aiming at.
- ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses — free; short, and the foundation of the professional identity this course is trying to start.
- A calendar system you will actually use — paper or digital; the specific tool matters far less than using one consistently.
- Florida Board of Nursing (floridasnursing.gov) — free; licensure requirements, approved programmes, and the rules you will practise under.
- NCSBN NCLEX-RN test plan (ncsbn.org) — free; it states exactly what the licensure examination covers, and reading it early shapes how you study everything else.
- American Nurses Association (nursingworld.org) — free position statements and the Code of Ethics for Nurses; student membership is inexpensive.
Career Pathways
- Registered nurses — SOC 29-1141; the largest healthcare occupation in the United States and a sustained shortage occupation in Florida.
- Florida hospital systems — AdventHealth, Orlando Health, BayCare, Baptist Health, Tampa General, Jackson Health, and in UWF's own region Baptist Health Care and Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola.
- ⚠ The BSN matters for employment, not only for progression. Magnet-recognised hospitals and many large systems prefer or require a baccalaureate for new hires, and several employers require an associate-prepared nurse to complete a BSN within a set period.
- Community and public health nursing — county health departments and the Florida Department of Health.
- Nurse management and leadership — SOC 11-9111; charge nurse, unit manager, and director roles normally require a baccalaureate at minimum.
- Quality improvement, patient safety, and informatics roles — a growing non-bedside pathway.
- Case management and utilisation review.
- Education and clinical instruction — SOC 25-1072; the nurse faculty shortage is itself a driver of the nursing shortage.
- Graduate pathways — nurse practitioner, nurse anaesthetist, midwifery, and clinical nurse specialist roles all require a BSN as the entry point.
- ⚠ An honest note on the work. Hospital nursing is shift-based, physically demanding, and emotionally heavy; burnout and moral distress are documented occupational realities rather than personal failings, and knowing that before entering the profession is better than discovering it afterwards.
Special Information
⚠⚠ Nursing licensure in Florida, and what a course does and does not deliver
- Registered nurse licensure in Florida is granted by the Florida Board of Nursing, and requires graduation from an approved programme and a passing result on the NCLEX-RN examination.
- ⚠⚠ Programme approval and accreditation are the things to verify, not individual courses. Eligibility to sit NCLEX-RN depends on completing an approved programme — so transferring individual nursing courses between institutions frequently does not work, even where the credit itself would articulate. Confirm a programme's current approval with the Florida Board of Nursing and its accreditation with CCNE or ACEN before enrolling.
- ⚠ A degree-completion route does not lead to initial licensure. If you are not already a licensed nurse, a BSN-completion sequence will not make you one — which is the single most consequential reason to confirm which route you are in.
- Florida participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate licence issued by a compact state carries practice privileges across member states — worth knowing for anyone planning to move.
- Continuing education is required for Florida licence renewal, including specified topics set by the Board.
⚠⚠ Nursing school workload is genuinely heavy, and being told so is not discouragement
- Pre-licensure nursing programmes combine dense content, clinical hours at times you do not choose, and high-stakes examinations. Students who plan around a conventional course load are surprised, and the surprise is what causes trouble rather than the difficulty itself.
- ⚠ Clinical placements are scheduled around the hospital, not around you. Early starts, weekends, and travel to sites are normal, and employment and childcare need planning around a timetable you will not control.
- ⚠⚠ Progression requirements in nursing programmes are stricter than in most degrees. Minimum grades in individual courses, limits on repeats, and cohort sequencing mean one failure can cost a year rather than a term. Know your programme's rules before you need them.
- Sleep is the first thing students sacrifice and the worst thing to sacrifice. The evidence on sleep deprivation and clinical error is not ambiguous, and this course covers it for that reason.
- ⚠ Ask for help early. The single strongest predictor of recovering from a bad start is how quickly a student contacts advising, and the students who most need to are the least likely to.
⚠⚠ Patient safety is the discipline nursing organises itself around
- Preventable harm in healthcare is common enough to be a leading cause of injury, and the response — checklists, protocols, read-backs, double-checks — is why so much of nursing practice is procedural.
- ⚠⚠ Two patient identifiers before every intervention is the single most repeated rule in the profession, because identification error is the root of a large share of serious harm.
- ⚠ Medication error is the most frequent avoidable harm. The rights of medication administration, independent double-checks for high-alert drugs, and never working around a barrier that exists for safety are all responses to it.
- Just culture distinguishes human error from at-risk behaviour from recklessness. Reporting a near miss is a professional obligation, and a system that punishes reporting stops learning.
- ⚠⚠ Escalation is a competence. Speaking up about a deteriorating patient or an unsafe order — including to someone more senior — is taught deliberately because hierarchy has killed patients.
- Documentation is part of care, not paperwork about it, and it is a legal record.
Course format and position in the curriculum
- UWF publishes no prerequisite and no co-requisite for this course, which places it in the standalone group described above rather than in the chained cohort sequence.
- ⚠ That does not mean it is unsequenced within a programme. A degree plan may still place it at a specific point, and the absence of an enforced prerequisite is not advice to take it early.
- UWF publishes no contact hours, lecture and laboratory split, or terms of offering for any course, and no fee notice appears on this entry. Confirm the offering pattern with the department.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For nursing the far more important constraint is programmatic: courses are sequenced within an approved programme, tied to clinical placement capacity, and connected to NCLEX-RN eligibility — so transferring individual nursing courses between programmes frequently is not possible even where the credit articulates. Ask the receiving programme before assuming anything.
