Course Description
Automated Show Control explores how computerized systems manage audio, lighting, multimedia, event sequencing, and automated show control for indoor and outdoor entertainment venues.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, MUM is the Music Business and Production prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits, offered fall, with a $60 laboratory fee. ⚠ The single term of offering is worth planning around.
This is a course with an unusually direct line to well-paid Florida employment, and students routinely do not realise it. Every theme park attraction, every arena show, every cruise ship production, and every large corporate event runs on automated show control — and Florida has more of that infrastructure concentrated in it than almost anywhere in the world. The skill set is genuinely scarce, because it requires someone comfortable with both entertainment production and networked control systems, and most people are one or the other.
It also carries a real safety obligation. Automated systems move heavy objects above people, and the note below is the most important content here.
Daytona State does not publish a lecture and laboratory split for its performing arts courses. The applied and studio courses in these prefixes run at approximately 20 contact hours per credit — TPP1110 (Acting 1) and MUM1622 (Sound Reinforcement) are both live at 3 credits and 60 hours. This course is a studio or applied course and is priced at that convention.

Special Information
⚠⚠ Automated systems move heavy things over people — treat that as the first fact
- Show control drives motors, hoists, lifts, and moving scenery, and in entertainment venues those move above audiences and performers. A control fault is not an inconvenience; it is a crushing hazard.
- ⚠⚠ Never test automation with people in the movement path. Clear the area, confirm it is clear, and confirm again — and "it is only a small move" is exactly the circumstance in which people are hurt.
- Emergency stop must be tested, reachable, and understood by everyone in the room, and its function must be verified rather than assumed.
- Know how to take manual control of every subsystem, and practise it before you need it.
- ⚠ Rigging is a specialist discipline with its own certification. Do not hang, load, or modify suspended equipment without qualification — ETCP certification exists precisely because this kills people.
- A cue that has not been tested at full speed with the actual equipment has not been tested. Simulated and dry-run behaviour differs from loaded behaviour.
- Understand the failure state of every device. What a motor, lift, or effect does when it loses control signal or power is a design decision, and you must know what it is for every element in your show.
- ⚠ Pyrotechnics, lasers, and flame effects are separately regulated and require licensed operators and permits. Do not operate them without the required qualification, and note that fog and haze interact with fire detection systems.
- Electrical work in venues is regulated work. Temporary power distribution for events has specific requirements, and outdoor venues add weather and grounding considerations.
- Stop the show if something is unsafe. Nobody has ever been disciplined for stopping a show that turned out to be fine.
⚠ Networked show control fails in ways that audio-only systems do not
- Once control runs over a network, ordinary network problems become show-stopping problems — an address conflict, a misconfigured switch, or an unexpected broadcast storm can take a show down.
- ⚠ Keep the show network separate from everything else. A control network that shares infrastructure with venue business traffic, guest wifi, or the internet is a fault waiting for an audience.
- Document addressing rigorously and keep the documentation with the system. The person troubleshooting at showtime is frequently not the person who built it.
- Label physically as well as logically — cables, ports, and devices. It is tedious once and invaluable repeatedly.
- Build redundancy where a failure would stop the show, and test the failover rather than trusting it.
- Change nothing on show day without a tested reason and a way back. The classic incident is a small improvement made an hour before doors.
- Keep a known-good configuration backup for every device and console, and know how to restore it quickly.
- ⚠ Consider security. Entertainment control networks have been reachable from outside more often than the industry likes to admit, and a compromised show system is both a safety and a business problem.
⚠⚠ Your hearing is the instrument — and the damage is permanent, cumulative, and painless
- Noise-induced hearing loss does not heal. There is no treatment that restores it, and in an audio career it is a slow, self-inflicted, entirely preventable end to your employability.
- ⚠⚠ It accumulates and you will not notice it happening. The loss begins in frequency ranges you do not use conversationally, so by the time it is obvious in normal speech it is substantial and long-established.
- Both level and duration matter. A moderate level for a long session does as much damage as a loud one for a short one — and studio and live work are long.
- Mix at moderate levels. Loud monitoring is not more accurate, it is more flattering — it exaggerates low and high frequencies and produces mixes that fall apart quietly. Reference at a conversational level and check loud briefly.
- Take breaks every hour. Ear fatigue degrades judgement long before it damages hearing, and most bad mix decisions are made in hour five.
- ⚠ Get custom musician's earplugs. Unlike foam plugs they attenuate evenly, so you can still hear accurately — they cost roughly what a decent microphone cable set costs and they protect a career. Wear them at every live event, without exception.
- Beware in-ear monitors and headphones, where the source is against the eardrum and there is no room to warn you it is loud.
- Ringing or muffled hearing after a session is a warning, not a badge. Repeated temporary shifts become permanent ones.
- Get a baseline hearing test now, while you are young, and repeat it periodically. It is the only way to detect the change early enough to act on it.
- ⚠ Tinnitus is common in this profession and there is no cure. Every experienced engineer knows someone whose career it ended.
⚠⚠ Copyright in music is two separate rights — and this is where careers go wrong
- A recorded song contains two distinct copyrights: the composition (the song itself — melody and lyrics) and the sound recording (the particular recorded performance). They can be owned by entirely different people, and using a recording generally requires clearing both.
- ⚠⚠ Sampling requires permission from both rights holders. There is no minimum duration that is automatically safe, "it is only two seconds" is not a defence, and neither is altering it beyond recognition.
- ⚠ Credit is not a licence. Naming the source, linking to it, or saying "no copyright infringement intended" changes nothing legally — this is the single most common misunderstanding among students.
- Fair use is a defence assessed case by case, not a category you can rely on in advance, and commercial use weighs against it.
- Agree splits in writing before the session, not after the song works. Almost every serious dispute between collaborators is about ownership that everyone assumed was obvious. Write down who wrote what and who owns what, and have everyone sign it.
- Understand work for hire. An engineer or producer working under a work-for-hire agreement may own nothing of what they made; one working without an agreement may own more than the client expected. Either way, get it in writing before the work starts.
- Get releases from performers, and understand what rights a session player is granting.
- Live performance of others' work requires a licence, normally held by the venue through a performing rights organisation — but confirm rather than assume, particularly for events you organise yourself.
- Register your own work, keep dated records of creation, and archive session files and stems.
- ⚠ Rule 11 applies. Music licensing, streaming royalties, and the treatment of AI-generated material are all actively changing — verify current requirements and take advice on anything commercial.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
