Course Description
Sound for Media introduces audio recording principles and manipulation for media work, using professional-grade hardware and software common in the industry.

⚠ Dialogue is the job — everything else is decoration on top of it
The professional priority that reorders how a student should spend effort.
If the audience cannot understand the dialogue, nothing else you did matters. Sound design and music are what students want to work on; dialogue editing is what employers pay for, and it consumes the majority of the schedule on most projects.
What dialogue work actually involves:
- Cleaning up production sound — removing clicks, thumps, rustle, and noise while keeping the voice natural. Over-processing is as damaging as under-processing, and it sounds worse.
- Smoothing cuts so that the background does not jump between shots. This is the single most common mark of amateur work, and it is fixed with room tone.
- Room tone is essential. A minute of silence recorded on location is the material that makes edits invisible, and forgetting to record it is the classic production sound failure.
- ADR when the location recording is unusable — and matching the ADR to the original perspective, room, and performance is genuinely difficult.
- Perspective matters. A voice from across a room should sound like it, and dialogue that does not match the shot reads as wrong even to viewers who cannot say why.
- Mix so dialogue sits above everything, on small speakers as well as large. Check your mix on a phone and a laptop, because that is where most of it will be heard.
The related practical point: fix it in the recording, not in the mix. Good production sound saves days of post, and restoration software is an emergency tool rather than a workflow.
⚠ Deliver to spec — loudness is a legal and contractual requirement, not a preference
The professional discipline that most distinguishes media audio from music production.
Music is delivered as a mix that someone likes. Media audio is delivered to a written specification, and failing it means rejection and rework:
- Loudness is regulated in broadcast. US legislation on commercial loudness led to enforceable standards — ATSC A/85 in the US and EBU R 128 in Europe — and broadcasters reject material that does not conform.
- Loudness is measured, not judged. Integrated loudness in LUFS, true peak, and loudness range are numbers on a meter, and "it sounds about right" is not a delivery method.
- Streaming platforms normalize playback to their own targets, which means mastering louder no longer wins — it just gets turned down, with the dynamics already squashed.
- Deliverables are specified precisely — file format, bit depth, sample rate, channel layout, stem separation, head and tail leader, and naming convention. Read the spec sheet before you start, not before you deliver.
- Stems are usually required — separate dialogue, music, and effects — because they permit foreign-language versions and re-versioning without a remix.
- Deadlines in this industry are real. A broadcast slot or a release date does not move because your mix is not finished, and reliability is what gets people rehired.
⚠ Every piece of music and audio you use must be cleared
The legal exposure most likely to catch a student or a young freelancer.
- Using music with picture requires a synchronization licence from the composition owner and a master use licence from the recording owner. Both, from potentially different parties. Buying a song does not license it for use in a video.
- "It's only a student project" is not a legal category. Educational fair use is narrower than students assume, and it evaporates entirely the moment the work is posted publicly or used in a portfolio reel that promotes your services.
- Production music libraries exist for this — pre-cleared music licensed at defined rates. This is what the industry uses and what you should use.
- Creative Commons is not "free." Licences carry conditions — attribution, non-commercial, share-alike — and violating them is infringement. Read the specific licence on each file, including on Freesound.
- Sound effects libraries have licence terms too, commonly restricting redistribution of the raw files.
- Record your own effects. It is free, it is legally clean, it is frequently better than the library version, and building a personal library is a career asset.
Rule 11 applies — licensing structures and platform policies change; verify with the rights holders and current industry practice.
⚠ Hearing damage is permanent, cumulative, and it ends audio careers
The most important safety content in any audio course, and the one students discount because the damage is painless and slow.
Noise-induced hearing loss does not heal. The hair cells in the cochlea do not regenerate, and what you lose is gone. Audio professionals are an at-risk population precisely because loud is the working environment, and the loss shows up as difficulty hearing high frequencies and understanding speech in noise — which is to say, it degrades exactly the ability the career depends on.
What the exposure standards say, and why they matter:
- Risk is a function of level and duration together. Safe exposure time falls sharply as level rises — NIOSH's recommended exposure limit halves the permitted time for every 3 dB increase, so a few minutes at very high levels can carry the risk of hours at moderate ones.
- OSHA's enforceable workplace standard is less protective than NIOSH's recommendation. Complying with the legal minimum is not the same as protecting your hearing.
- Tinnitus is a warning sign, not an inconvenience. Ringing after a session or a show means damage occurred, and it frequently becomes permanent.
- Temporary threshold shift — the muffled hearing after loud exposure — indicates injury even when hearing appears to recover.
What to actually do, which is cheap and effective:
- Wear musician's earplugs. Flat-attenuation plugs reduce level without wrecking the frequency balance, which means you can still hear what you are working on. Foam plugs muffle the top end and are better than nothing but poor for mixing.
- Mix at moderate levels and check loud briefly. Mixing loud is a habit that damages hearing and produces worse mixes, because loudness flatters everything.
- Take breaks — the ears recover somewhat, and ear fatigue degrades your judgement long before it damages you.
- Use a sound level meter. Phone apps are approximate and are still better than guessing, and knowing the number changes behaviour.
- Get a baseline audiogram now, while you are a student, and repeat it periodically. You cannot detect gradual loss subjectively.
- Protect the audience too. Front-of-house engineers make decisions that affect hundreds of people's hearing, and some venues and jurisdictions impose limits.
The professional framing worth adopting immediately: your ears are your instrument and your income. Every working engineer knows someone whose career ended this way.
