Course Description
Live Recording Techniques is a study of live concert recording techniques in which students explore the unique challenges involved in recording live performances. Topics include selection and operation of recording equipment, synchronization, and transformer isolation, and students create a live recording under the supervision of the instructor. Field work is required.

Special Information
⚠⚠ There is no second take — redundancy is the method, not a precaution
- The performance happens once. Every decision in live recording follows from that, and it is what distinguishes this discipline from studio work.
- Always run a backup. A second recorder capturing at minimum a stereo mix, on separate power and separate media, has saved more sessions than any other single practice. Professionals do this every time.
- Set gain conservatively. A quiet recording can be raised; a clipped one cannot be repaired. Leave more headroom than feels comfortable, because the loudest moment of a performance is not the one you soundchecked.
- Record at 24-bit — the dynamic range makes conservative gain costless, and there is no reason not to.
- Verify you are actually recording before the performance, and verify again after the first song. Recorders that appear armed and are not have ruined many sessions.
- Monitor the recording, not the console. Listening to the return from the recorder is what catches a dead channel or a failing converter.
- Arrive early enough to fix problems. Hum, a bad split, an RF issue — these take time, and there is none once doors open.
- Label everything and document the input list. Thirty-two untitled tracks the following week is a preventable misery.
- Secure the media immediately after the show and copy it before you leave the venue if possible. Do not strike the recorder until the files are verified and backed up.
- Three copies, two media types, one offsite — the standard backup rule, and it applies from the moment the show ends.
⚠ Ground loops, splits, and transformer isolation — the electrical core of the course
- The catalog names transformer isolation explicitly, which tells you this is a technically serious course rather than a survey.
- A ground loop occurs when equipment shares more than one path to ground, and the resulting circulating current appears as hum. Live recording creates them constantly because the recording rig and the house system have separate power.
- An isolation transformer breaks the electrical path while passing audio, which is why transformer-isolated splitters exist. Understand the mechanism — it is the difference between fixing a problem and guessing.
- Never lift a safety ground to solve hum. It works and it can kill someone. Transformer isolation is the correct answer, and the ground-lift switch on a direct box lifts the audio shield, not the mains earth — know which is which.
- Splitting from the house system can be transformer-isolated, direct, or via a digital split. Each has trade-offs in isolation, loading, and who controls gain.
- Gain sharing is a negotiation. On a direct split, the front of house engineer's gain changes affect your recording — agree beforehand who owns the preamp, or use an isolated split so you do not care.
- Phantom power and splits interact. Know which leg of a split supplies phantom and what happens to the others.
- Balanced lines reject interference, and cable length, routing away from power runs, and quality connectors all matter in a field environment.
- Radio frequency interference is a Florida field reality — nearby transmitters, LED lighting, and dimmer packs all inject noise. Move cables, reroute, and isolate.
- Test the whole chain before the audience arrives, at performance levels, with the lighting rig running.
⚠ You are a guest at someone else's event
- The performance and the audience come first, and the recording second. A recording engineer who disrupts a show has failed regardless of the files.
- Get permission in writing. The artist, the venue, and sometimes the promoter all have interests. Recording without permission is a legal problem, and the right to record is separate from the right to distribute.
- Distribution rights are a separate conversation. Who owns the recording, who may release it, and how any revenue is shared should be agreed before the show — see this repository's DIG2510 guide on licence versus assignment.
- Compositions have rights too. Recording covers of copyrighted songs for distribution requires mechanical licensing, and this is routinely overlooked.
- Coordinate with front of house and monitors early and politely. They are working the show; you are adding load to their evening. Being easy to accommodate is how you get invited back.
- Stay out of sightlines and walkways, keep your rig compact, and tape down everything.
- Do not troubleshoot loudly mid-performance. If a channel fails, note it and fix what you can silently — the show continues.
- Be discreet about what you hear. Rehearsals, mistakes, and backstage conversation are not yours to share, and discretion is part of a working reputation.
- Reliability is the whole business. The engineer who shows up early, works quietly, and delivers files that work is the one who gets called.
⚠⚠ Hearing damage is permanent, cumulative, and the occupational hazard of this career
- Noise-induced hearing loss does not heal. Hair cells in the cochlea do not regenerate, and the loss accumulates silently over years before it becomes obvious.
- NIOSH recommends a 85 dBA exposure limit averaged over eight hours, with the permissible time halving for roughly every 3 dB increase. At the levels common in live sound, safe exposure is measured in minutes rather than hours.
- Live music routinely runs well above that. A loud club or concert can sit above 100 dBA at the mix position for hours, which is orders of magnitude past the recommended dose.
- Wear proper hearing protection — the flat-response kind. Musician's earplugs with a uniform attenuation filter reduce level without destroying the frequency balance, which means you can still mix while wearing them. Foam plugs kill the high end and are useless for critical listening.
- Custom-moulded plugs are worth the money and are the single best career investment an audio student can make. Off-the-shelf filtered plugs are inexpensive and are far better than nothing.
- Tinnitus is a warning, not a badge. Ringing after a show means damage occurred. Temporary threshold shift — the muffled feeling afterwards — is also damage.
- Your ears are your instrument. An engineer with a notch at 4 kHz mixes to compensate for it and produces work that sounds wrong to everyone else. This ends careers, and it is entirely preventable.
- Get a baseline audiogram now and repeat it periodically. You cannot notice gradual loss without a measurement.
- Take breaks and give your ears quiet. Recovery time between exposures matters, and a quiet drive home beats a loud one.
- Mix quieter than feels natural. Loudness biases judgement — everything sounds better loud — and the professional habit is to check at low level, where balance problems become obvious.
⚠ Check the scheduled studio and field hours — the credit value understates the time
Daytona State publishes the credit value but not a lecture-and-laboratory hour split, so this repository's contact-hour figure is an estimate for planning rather than a published number.
- Production courses meet more hours than a lecture course of the same credit value, and this one states outside laboratory or field work as a requirement.
- Field and session work happens on the event's schedule, not yours. Load-in for a concert recording is not a two-hour block you choose — it is a full day, on a weekend, ending late.
- Read the section schedule before you register, and ask the instructor what the out-of-class commitment actually looks like in practice.
- Studio and edit time is bookable and finite. Students who leave project work to the last week find the facility fully booked; those who book early finish.
- Take fewer production courses at once than you think you can manage.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
