Course Description
Studio Production is a detailed study of the roles of the music producer and the recording engineer. It covers musical arrangement, lead sheets, number charts, and union documentation and payment practices, and requires students to create demo and master projects under instructor guidance with required lab hours.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, MUM is the Music Production prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits, prerequisite MUM2600, offered fall, giving approximately 60 contact hours consistent with the published MUM family in this repository.
The distinction the course is built on is worth stating early: the engineer is responsible for how it sounds and the producer is responsible for whether it works. One is a technical role and one is a judgement role, they are frequently held by the same person, and confusing them produces records that are immaculately captured and not worth listening to. The inclusion of arrangement, charts, and union paperwork in a single course reflects what the producer's job actually contains.

Special Information
⚠ Pre-production is where records are made — and it costs nothing
The producer's lesson that most changes outcomes, and the one students most consistently skip because it is not glamorous.
Problems fixed before the session cost nothing; problems discovered during the session cost studio time. The recurring failure in student and independent projects is arriving to track a song that was not ready — arrangement undecided, tempo unsettled, parts unlearned, key wrong for the singer.
What pre-production actually involves:
- Is the song finished? A weak section does not improve when recorded well. The most valuable thing a producer does is say the second verse is not working, before anyone books a room.
- Is the key right for the vocalist? Changing key after tracking means re-recording everything. Try the song in three keys and listen to where the singer sounds best in the chorus, not where it is comfortable in the verse.
- Is the tempo right? A few BPM changes the feel entirely, and it is nearly impossible to fix afterwards.
- Is the arrangement decided? Who plays what, where parts enter and drop out, and what leaves space for the vocal.
- Can the players play it? Rehearse to the click if you will track to one; drummers who have never played to a click discover this at $50 an hour.
- Are the instruments serviceable? New strings, fresh drum heads, and a tuned instrument. Nothing in the mix fixes a dead snare.
- Is the session planned? Order of tracking, who is needed when, and what the day's goal is.
The related professional skill the course teaches directly: the number chart. A chart in scale degrees rather than absolute chords transposes instantly, is readable by any competent session player, and lets a room change key in seconds. It is the working notation of session musicians for exactly that reason, and being able to write one quickly marks you as someone who has done this before.
⚠ Paperwork: who owns the master, and who gets paid
The business content the catalog description names explicitly, and it is where new producers get hurt.
- The recording and the song are separate property. The sound recording (the master) and the musical composition are distinct copyrights with distinct owners. A producer typically has an interest in the master; the songwriter owns the composition. Clearing anything requires both.
- Agree the deal before the session, in writing. Who owns the master, what the producer is paid, whether there are producer points (a royalty percentage), and who pays the costs. "We'll sort it out later" is how friendships end.
- Work-for-hire means you were never the author. If you sign a work-for-hire agreement, the commissioning party owns the work outright from creation. That is sometimes a fair deal and it should be a knowing one.
- Session musicians must be documented and paid. Under union agreements this means AFM or SAG-AFTRA session reports and scale payments; outside union work it still means a written agreement covering payment and rights, or the performer may later claim an interest.
- Get releases. Anyone whose performance appears on the recording should have signed something.
- Samples must be cleared — both the master and the composition — before release, not after. Uncleared sampling is the most common way independent releases become legal problems.
- Document splits at the session, as covered in this repository's songwriting guide. Memory reconstructs authorship favourably without anyone lying.
Rule 11 applies — union scales, agreement forms, and copyright provisions change; verify with the AFM, SAG-AFTRA, and the Copyright Office directly.
⚠ Producing is people management with a mixing desk attached
The part of the role least covered by technical training and most decisive in practice.
A recording session is an emotionally exposed situation. Performers are being judged, permanently, in front of colleagues, while a clock runs. The producer's job includes managing that, and the technical work is comparatively easy by comparison.
- Get the vocal take early. Singers are freshest in the first hour or two, and a great take at hour six is uncommon. Plan the day around the most fragile performance.
- Say what you want in musical terms, not technical ones. "Push the second line a little" is actionable; "more energy" is not.
- Never criticize in front of the room. Talk to a struggling player privately, and address the take rather than the person.
- Keep the control room calm. The mood in the room ends up on the recording, and a tense session produces cautious playing.
- Know when to stop. Diminishing returns arrive, and takes 15 through 30 are usually worse than take 4. Comping exists for a reason.
- Have an opinion and hold it lightly. Artists hire producers for judgement, and a producer with no view is not doing the job — but the record belongs to the artist.
- Studio etiquette is real. Do not touch other people's instruments, do not comment on someone else's session, be early, and stay off your phone.
⚠ Hearing damage is permanent, cumulative, and it ends audio careers
The most important safety content in any audio course, and the one students discount because the damage is painless and slow.
Noise-induced hearing loss does not heal. The hair cells in the cochlea do not regenerate, and what you lose is gone. Audio professionals are an at-risk population precisely because loud is the working environment, and the loss shows up as difficulty hearing high frequencies and understanding speech in noise — which is to say, it degrades exactly the ability the career depends on.
What the exposure standards say, and why they matter:
- Risk is a function of level and duration together. Safe exposure time falls sharply as level rises — NIOSH's recommended exposure limit halves the permitted time for every 3 dB increase, so a few minutes at very high levels can carry the risk of hours at moderate ones.
- OSHA's enforceable workplace standard is less protective than NIOSH's recommendation. Complying with the legal minimum is not the same as protecting your hearing.
- Tinnitus is a warning sign, not an inconvenience. Ringing after a session or a show means damage occurred, and it frequently becomes permanent.
- Temporary threshold shift — the muffled hearing after loud exposure — indicates injury even when hearing appears to recover.
What to actually do, which is cheap and effective:
- Wear musician's earplugs. Flat-attenuation plugs reduce level without wrecking the frequency balance, which means you can still hear what you are working on. Foam plugs muffle the top end and are better than nothing but poor for mixing.
- Mix at moderate levels and check loud briefly. Mixing loud is a habit that damages hearing and produces worse mixes, because loudness flatters everything.
- Take breaks — the ears recover somewhat, and ear fatigue degrades your judgement long before it damages you.
- Use a sound level meter. Phone apps are approximate and are still better than guessing, and knowing the number changes behaviour.
- Get a baseline audiogram now, while you are a student, and repeat it periodically. You cannot detect gradual loss subjectively.
- Protect the audience too. Front-of-house engineers make decisions that affect hundreds of people's hearing, and some venues and jurisdictions impose limits.
The professional framing worth adopting immediately: your ears are your instrument and your income. Every working engineer knows someone whose career ended this way.
⚠ Only about three Florida institutions carry this number — hedge accordingly
This course appears at roughly three institutions statewide. Content, credit value, and emphasis vary more than they would for a widely taught course. Read your own institution's catalog description and syllabus rather than assuming this guide describes your section exactly, and have any transfer evaluated in writing.
Course format and transfer
MUM2609 is 3 credits with an estimated 60 contact hours, and the catalog notes required lab hours beyond scheduled class time — studio work is booked, and the real time commitment substantially exceeds the scheduled hours. Assessment is by completed demo and master projects plus session documentation; treat both as portfolio material, because in audio the portfolio is the qualification.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
Music production A.S. degrees are applied and do not carry the A.A.'s guaranteed junior-status transfer. The practical career point for this field: studio credits and finished work matter more than the transcript. Assist on every session you can, keep organized files of everything you work on, and get your name on real releases while you are still enrolled.
