Course Description

Soundtrack Development takes a project-oriented approach to the development of soundtracks for audio-visual presentations such as motion pictures, television shows, and commercials. It covers basic principles of graphic design and technology, basic video editing techniques, DVD authoring, Foley, ADR, music timing, sweetening, and sound replacement.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, MUM is the Music — Commercial and Production prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits, corequisite MUM2640, offered spring, giving approximately 45 contact hours.

Audio for picture is a distinct discipline from music production, and the difference is worth stating plainly: in music the audio is the product; in post-production the audio serves an image and a story. A cue that is beautiful and pulls attention away from a performance is a failure. That subordination is the hardest adjustment for musicians moving into this work, and it is also why the field values people who understand narrative as much as signal.

Special Information

⚠⚠ Music and sound licensing — the legal content that ends careers when ignored

The most consequential material in this course, and the part students most often treat casually.

⚠ Synchronization is the technical core — get timecode right or nothing works

⚠ Dialogue first, and the mix serves the picture

How Florida course levels affect transfer

The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.

MUM2607 is 3 credits and approximately 45 contact hours, offered spring with corequisite MUM2640. It is project-oriented per the catalog, so expect finished deliverables assessed as work rather than examinations — and expect the out-of-class edit and studio time to substantially exceed the scheduled hours.

Build a reel. Audio post is hired on demonstrated work, not on transcripts: two or three short, finished pieces with clean dialogue, considered effects, and appropriate music will get you further than any credential. Keep the project files and the deliverables, and make sure every element in a reel piece is legally cleared — a reel with unlicensed music is a reel you cannot show a client.
