Course Description
Sound Reinforcement is a study of current technology and techniques in sound reinforcement, focusing on the selection and operation of sound equipment for venues ranging from small clubs to large concert halls. Topics include live mixing and monitor equalization, and outside laboratory and field work is required.

Live sound is the least romantic and most employable corner of audio. ⚠⚠ Hearing damage is permanent, cumulative, and the occupational hazard of this career
- Noise-induced hearing loss does not heal. Hair cells in the cochlea do not regenerate, and the loss accumulates silently over years before it becomes obvious.
- NIOSH recommends a 85 dBA exposure limit averaged over eight hours, with the permissible time halving for roughly every 3 dB increase. At the levels common in live sound, safe exposure is measured in minutes rather than hours.
- Live music routinely runs well above that. A loud club or concert can sit above 100 dBA at the mix position for hours, which is orders of magnitude past the recommended dose.
- Wear proper hearing protection — the flat-response kind. Musician's earplugs with a uniform attenuation filter reduce level without destroying the frequency balance, which means you can still mix while wearing them. Foam plugs kill the high end and are useless for critical listening.
- Custom-moulded plugs are worth the money and are the single best career investment an audio student can make. Off-the-shelf filtered plugs are inexpensive and are far better than nothing.
- Tinnitus is a warning, not a badge. Ringing after a show means damage occurred. Temporary threshold shift — the muffled feeling afterwards — is also damage.
- Your ears are your instrument. An engineer with a notch at 4 kHz mixes to compensate for it and produces work that sounds wrong to everyone else. This ends careers, and it is entirely preventable.
- Get a baseline audiogram now and repeat it periodically. You cannot notice gradual loss without a measurement.
- Take breaks and give your ears quiet. Recovery time between exposures matters, and a quiet drive home beats a loud one.
- Mix quieter than feels natural. Loudness biases judgement — everything sounds better loud — and the professional habit is to check at low level, where balance problems become obvious.
⚠⚠ Electricity and rigging are the two things that can kill you or someone else
- Live sound involves substantial electrical power, often in venues with questionable wiring, outdoors, and in wet conditions.
- Never defeat a ground pin. Lifting a ground to solve a hum is how people die, and the correct solutions — balanced lines, isolation transformers, correct grounding topology — exist precisely so nobody has to.
- Know the load you are drawing and do not overload circuits. Amplifier inrush current is substantial, and daisy-chained power strips are a fire risk.
- Outdoor events and water do not mix. Florida's afternoon thunderstorms are a routine operational hazard, and covering equipment is not the same as making it safe. Have a plan to power down.
- Flown loudspeakers are life safety. Rigging is a specialized discipline with certification, load calculations, and hardware ratings, and an untrained person must not fly anything over people. Learn to recognize what you are not qualified to do.
- Speaker poles and stands fall. Weight the bases, keep the height sensible, and route cables so nobody trips.
- Lift properly and get help. Amplifier racks, sub cabinets, and console cases are heavy, and back injuries end careers in this trade too.
- Tape everything down. Cable across a walkway that is not taped or covered is a trip hazard and a liability.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and keep a flashlight on you. Stages are dark and full of edges.
- You may refuse unsafe work. Time pressure at a load-in is real, and it is never a reason to fly something badly.
⚠ Gain structure and feedback — the two skills that separate operators from button-pushers
- Gain structure is the foundation of everything else. Set correctly, the system has headroom and a good signal-to-noise ratio; set badly, you get noise, distortion, or both, and no amount of equalization fixes it.
- Set gain at the source first, with faders at unity, and work down the chain. Students who mix by pushing faders because their gain is wrong learn a habit that never scales.
- Feedback is a loop, not a mystery. It occurs where the gain around the microphone-to-loudspeaker loop reaches unity at some frequency. Everything you do about it addresses one of those terms.
- Fix feedback with placement and pattern before reaching for equalization. Microphone choice, polar pattern, distance from the source, and loudspeaker aim do more than a filter ever will.
- Ringing out a system is a skill worth drilling, and knowing the frequencies a room favours saves time under pressure.
- Monitors cause most feedback, and monitor mixing is a genuinely different discipline from front of house — the musician's needs, not the audience's, define a good monitor mix.
- In-ear monitoring changes the problem entirely and brings its own issues: isolation, ambient mics, and the risk of a very loud failure directly in someone's ear.
- Equalize to fix problems, not to make things "better." Subtractive equalization is usually the right instinct.
- Listen to the room, not the console. Walk the space during soundcheck; the mix position is one seat in a building full of them.
⚠ Live sound is a service job, and reliability is the whole reputation
- You are there to serve the performance, not to demonstrate your mixing. The best live sound is the kind nobody notices.
- Show up early, every time. In this trade being on time is late, and a reputation for punctuality gets more work than talent does.
- Be easy to work with. The industry runs on referrals from crew and artists, and difficult people stop getting called regardless of skill.
- Handle the artist relationship carefully. Musicians are nervous before a show; "I'll take care of it" delivered calmly is worth more than a technical explanation.
- Troubleshoot systematically under pressure. Halve the signal chain, test, halve again. Panic and random cable-swapping waste the only thing you do not have, which is time.
- Have a backup for anything critical — a spare vocal microphone, a spare cable, a spare direct box. Failures happen mid-show and the fix must be in your pocket.
- Label and coil properly. Cable care and a tidy stage are the visible signs of a professional, and they are noticed.
- Take the field work seriously. The catalog requires it because you cannot learn live sound in a classroom — the room, the pressure, and the unrepeatability are the subject.

- Read the section schedule before you register, and ask the instructor what the out-of-class commitment actually looks like in practice.
- Studio and edit time is bookable and finite. Students who leave project work to the last week find the facility fully booked; those who book early finish.
- Take fewer production courses at once than you think you can manage.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
