Course Description
Immunohematology II is a continuation and application of Immunohematology I. The course allows for supervised practice at one of the affiliate hospitals and for more advanced practical training in modern blood banking and transfusion services at the hospital. UWF notes that permission is required.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, MLS is the Medical Laboratory Sciences prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 4 semester hours through the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, College of Health. It is offered at approximately 2 Florida institutions.
This is the rotation with the shortest distance between a bench error and a dead patient. In every other section a wrong result leads to a wrong decision by a clinician; in the blood bank the product itself goes into the patient, and an ABO-incompatible unit can kill within minutes. Everything about how a transfusion service is run — the second identifiers, the read-backs, the signatures, the refusal to accept a mislabelled tube — follows from that. Students consistently find this the most demanding rotation, and the reason is not the difficulty of the tests but the consequence of getting one wrong.
⚠⚠ The "L" here means CLINICAL PRACTICE, not a teaching laboratory
- This course is supervised practice in a hospital laboratory — a clinical rotation. It is not a campus teaching laboratory, and the L in the course number should not be read as one.
- ⚠ The suffix is a slot in a constrained set of course-designation options, not a description of the content. SCNS offers a limited range of suffixes — no suffix for lecture, C for combined, L for laboratory — and a clinical rotation has to be filed under one of them. L is the closest available fit, so that is what it gets.
- ⚠⚠ This matters when reading any transcript or catalog. A suffix records how a course was fitted into the available codes, and the description is the authority on what the course actually is. The same caution applies to the C suffix in this prefix, which marks a separate programme track rather than an integrated lecture-plus-laboratory course.
- Practically: expect a scheduled placement at an affiliated hospital, not a weekly campus session — with rostered hours, a site supervisor, and assessment against clinical competencies.
⚠⚠ UWF runs TWO parallel MLS tracks — check which sequence you are in
- UWF publishes two distinct routes through the same subject matter. One is a split lecture-plus-laboratory sequence (for example MLS4550 with MLS4550L, MLS4625 with MLS4625L), whose prerequisites are general science courses such as PCB3063 and BCH3033. The other is a "Professional Track" of integrated 3- and 4-credit C-suffix courses (MLS4193C, MLS4221C, MLS4306C, MLS4335C, MLS4461C, MLS4463C, MLS4506C, MLS4552C, MLS4626C, MLS4631C), whose prerequisites are the MLS-internal MLS3194 and MLS3621.
- ⚠ The two tracks are not interchangeable and their prerequisites differ. A student entering through general science prerequisites lands in the split sequence; one already inside the MLS programme lands in the Professional Track.
- ⚠⚠ This is not the usual C-suffix meaning. Elsewhere in Florida, a C suffix marks an integrated lecture-plus-laboratory version of the same course. At UWF in this prefix it marks a different programme track, with different entry requirements — so reading the suffix by the statewide convention will mislead.
- Confirm with the department which sequence your programme requires before enrolling in either.
⚠⚠ The contact-hour figure is derived, and a clinical rotation is not a weekly class
UWF publishes no contact hours, no lecture and laboratory split, and no terms of offering for any course. Every contact-hour value in a UWF guide in this repository is derived, and for a clinical rotation the derivation is weaker than for a classroom course and should be treated accordingly. The figure here applies a practicum convention of 45 contact hours per credit, giving 180 hours for 4 semester hours.
⚠ Treat that as a floor, not an estimate. Clinical rotations in NAACLS-accredited programmes are commonly scheduled as full-time blocks at an affiliated hospital over a number of weeks rather than as hours spread across a term, and a full-time block can exceed this figure substantially. ⚠⚠ The rotation schedule is the single most important practical fact about this course and UWF does not publish it — get it from the department in writing before planning employment, childcare, or travel around the term.

- ⚠ An honest note on the work itself. Clinical laboratory scientists are largely invisible to patients and produce the majority of the objective data on which diagnoses are made. The work is shift-based, includes nights and weekends in hospital settings, and carries real consequence — a transfusion or a critical result acted on incorrectly harms someone.
Special Information
⚠⚠ Florida licenses clinical laboratory personnel — and most states do not
- Florida is one of a small number of states that require a state licence to work as clinical laboratory personnel. Licensure is administered by the Florida Department of Health, and a national certification alone is not sufficient to practise in Florida.
- ⚠ This is the single most important regulatory fact for a Florida MLS student, and it cuts both ways: graduates of a Florida programme are prepared for it, while someone certified in a non-licensure state who moves to Florida must obtain the state licence separately.
- The usual national credential is the ASCP Board of Certification MLS credential, earned by examination after completing a programme accredited by NAACLS.
- ⚠⚠ Programmatic accreditation matters more here than institutional accreditation. Eligibility to sit the certification examination generally depends on graduating from a NAACLS-accredited programme — so confirm a programme's current accreditation status directly with NAACLS before enrolling, and be careful about assuming that transferred coursework preserves eligibility.
- Laboratory testing itself is federally regulated under CLIA, which sets personnel requirements by test complexity — the framework within which both licensure and certification sit.
⚠⚠ "Permission is required" — this course is gated on programme admission
- UWF marks this course Permission is required, and the same phrase appears on nearly every course in the MLS prefix. Meeting the listed prerequisites does not make a student eligible to enrol.
- ⚠ In practice this means admission to the Medical Laboratory Sciences programme. Clinical laboratory science programmes are cohort-based and capacity-limited, because laboratory seats and clinical placements are finite — so admission is competitive and separate from admission to the university.
- ⚠⚠ Apply to the programme early and treat its deadlines as the real constraint. A student who completes every science prerequisite and misses the cohort application waits a full year, because a cohort sequence normally starts once a year — and UWF publishes no terms of offering, so this cannot be confirmed from the catalog.

⚠⚠ The prerequisite is the entire preceding programme — every course, no exceptions
- UWF publishes: MLS4191/L AND MLS4220/L AND MLS4305/L AND MLS4334/L AND MLS4460/L AND MLS4462/L AND MLS4505/L AND MLS4550/L AND MLS4625/L AND MLS4630/L AND MLS4705. That is ten lecture-and-laboratory pairs plus the laboratory operations course.
- ⚠⚠ A single failed or missed course blocks every rotation. The rotations are the final stage of the programme, and because they all carry the same complete prerequisite set, failing one didactic course does not delay one rotation — it delays all six.
- ⚠ And because the programme is cohort-based, the delay is a year rather than a term. This is the structural reason clinical laboratory science programmes have little slack in them.
- The /L notation is UWF shorthand for the course together with its laboratory, so each element of that list means both halves.
- MLS4705 must additionally have been taken within 18 months of the clinical internship — a timing window, not just a prerequisite. Interrupting the programme can force a retake.
⚠⚠ You are a student in a working hospital, and the rules are different
- The results you help produce are used to treat real patients. That is the whole point of the rotation and it is also the reason the supervision is close — every result is reviewed before release.
- ⚠ Clinical placement requirements are administrative and take time. Immunisation records, tuberculosis screening, hepatitis B status, a background check, a drug screen, HIPAA training and site-specific orientation are all commonly required. Start them months early — an incomplete file delays a placement, and a delayed placement delays graduation.
- ⚠⚠ HIPAA applies to you personally from day one. Looking up a result for someone you are not working on — including yourself, a relative, or a friend — is a violation, is detected by routine audit, and has ended careers before they started. Do not discuss cases outside the laboratory, and never on social media.
- Sites are assigned, and they may not be local. Affiliated hospitals can require a commute or a temporary relocation, and shifts may include evenings or weekends. Ask about site allocation early.
- ⚠ Professional conduct is assessed. Punctuality, communication, and how you take correction are evaluated alongside technical competence — and a rotation is also an extended job interview, since hospitals routinely hire the students they train.
- Say when you do not know something. The single most dangerous behaviour in a clinical laboratory student is guessing rather than asking, and supervisors are watching for exactly that.
⚠⚠ The identification rule, and why it is absolute
- The commonest cause of a fatal haemolytic transfusion reaction is not a testing error — it is a patient identification error. The wrong specimen labelled for the wrong patient, or the right unit given to the wrong person. Your bench work can be flawless and the patient can still die.
- ⚠⚠ Never accept a mislabelled or unlabelled specimen, whatever the pressure. Rejecting it is the correct action, and transfusion services reject specimens for exactly this reason. You will be asked to make an exception; the answer is no.
- ⚠ Emergency release is a protocol, not a shortcut. Uncrossmatched group O is issued when waiting would kill the patient, and it is documented as a deliberate decision.
- Read-back confirmation on verbal orders and critical communications is required, and it exists because misheard identifiers have caused deaths.
- ⚠⚠ If you are unsure, stop and ask. In this section more than any other, the cost of asking is a moment and the cost of guessing can be a life.
⚠⚠ Bloodborne pathogen exposure is a real occupational risk, and the controls are not optional
- Clinical laboratory work involves human blood and body fluids, which are treated as infectious regardless of the patient's known status. That is Standard Precautions, and it is the organising rule of laboratory practice.
- The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) is law, not guidance — it requires an exposure control plan, personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and hepatitis B vaccination offered at no cost.
- ⚠⚠ Needlestick and sharps injuries are the highest-risk exposure route. Never recap needles by hand, dispose of sharps at the point of use, and report every exposure immediately — post-exposure prophylaxis is time-critical, and the instinct to say nothing is the dangerous one.
- Aerosol generation is the underestimated route. Uncapping tubes, centrifuge accidents, and pipetting all generate aerosols; a centrifuge that is unbalanced or opened too early is a genuine hazard.
- ⚠ Programmes normally require immunisation records, a health screening, and sometimes a background check and drug screen before clinical placement. Start these early — they take longer than students expect and can delay a placement.
- Chemical hazards sit alongside the biological ones, and both belong in the same safety habit.
⚠⚠ Quality control is the discipline, not a chore attached to it
- A result is worthless without evidence that the method was performing when it was produced. That evidence is quality control, and in clinical laboratory science it is the professional skill rather than an administrative overhead.
- ⚠ Learn Levey-Jennings charts and the Westgard rules properly. They are how a laboratory distinguishes normal analytical variation from a real shift or trend, and they are examined on the ASCP board certification.
- ⚠⚠ The consequence of releasing a result from an out-of-control run is a patient managed on a wrong number. Delta checks, critical value protocols, and result verification exist because that happens and because it harms people.
- Pre-analytical error dominates. Most laboratory errors occur before the specimen reaches the analyser — wrong patient, wrong tube, haemolysis, insufficient volume, wrong order of draw — and the laboratory is frequently blamed for errors that happened at collection.
- Accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity and predictive value are used precisely here, not loosely. Predictive value depends on disease prevalence, which is why the same test performs differently in different populations.
⚠ This is the end of the programme — line up certification and licensure now
- The rotations are the final stage before graduation, and the certification examination is best taken close to them while the material is current.
- ⚠⚠ Florida requires a state licence to work at the bench, and it is separate from national certification. The Florida Department of Health application takes time — begin it before you graduate, not after your first job offer.
- Use the rotation to revise. Everything on the ASCP Board of Certification examination is in front of you at the bench during these months, which is the best revision conditions you will ever have.
- ⚠ Ask about employment at your site. Hospitals hire students they have trained, and the conversation is easier to start while you are still there.
Course format and position in the curriculum

How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For clinical laboratory sciences the more important constraint is programmatic rather than numeric: courses are gated on admission to a cohort, sequenced tightly, and tied to NAACLS accreditation and to eligibility for certification — so transferring individual courses between programmes is frequently not possible even where the credit itself articulates.
