Course Description
Hematology Professional Track studies the production, maturation, and morphology of normal and abnormal human blood cells, describing pathological changes in morphology, cytochemistry, and distribution of cells in peripheral blood and bone marrow. Discussion and interpretation of manual and automated methods for blood cell counts, hemoglobin measurement, and other hematology parameters are stressed, together with the purpose, principle, and clinical value of routine and special procedures, the importance of quality control and quality assurance, and correlation of lab findings to various disease conditions. Students perform virtual laboratory activities and interpret laboratory data. Permission is required.
Within the SCNS taxonomy, MLS is the Medical Laboratory Sciences prefix. The University of West Florida publishes this at 4 semester hours through the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, College of Health.
⚠ The SCNS title for this number is "Clinical Hematology"; UWF publishes it as "Hematology Professional Track." That difference runs across the whole Professional Track and is described below.
Haematology is the discipline where virtual delivery has the strongest case and the clearest limit at the same time. Digital morphology is genuinely established practice — scanned slides and cell galleries are used in real laboratories for review, competency assessment, and proficiency testing — and a virtual system can show a student a thousand blasts where a teaching laboratory might have three slides. What it cannot do is teach someone to prepare and stain a film, or to find the one abnormal cell on a slide nobody has pre-selected.
⚠⚠⚠ What the Professional Track is — read this before enrolling
- UWF runs two parallel routes through the MLS subject matter, and this course is in the second one. The standard track is split lecture-plus-laboratory courses (for example MLS4550 with MLS4550L) with general-science prerequisites, followed by hospital clinical rotations (MLS4820L–MLS4825L). The Professional Track is integrated C-suffix courses prerequisite on MLS3194 and MLS3621, and it has no rotation courses at all.
- ⚠⚠ Every Professional Track course states that "students will perform virtual laboratory activities and interpret laboratory data." There is no bench component. That is a deliberate design, not an omission.
- ⚠⚠⚠ The reason is stated in the track's own capstone. MLS4704 Clinical Management Portfolio requires the student to "provide evidence of adequate training or work experience in Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, and Blood Bank equivalent to an MLS clinical internship" and to present it as a portfolio. The portfolio stands in place of the hospital rotations.
- Read together, the evidence points to a degree-completion pathway for people already working in clinical laboratories — a certified technician or experienced laboratorian completing a bachelor's degree, whose bench competence already exists and is evidenced rather than taught. ⚠ That is an inference from the catalog text, not a quotation from it, and it is stated here because the practical consequences are large.
- ⚠⚠⚠ If you have no clinical laboratory work experience, this is very unlikely to be your route. The virtual laboratories will not build bench skill, and the portfolio requirement cannot be satisfied by someone with no experience to document. Confirm with the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences which track you belong in before enrolling in anything.
- ⚠⚠ Certification eligibility is the question to settle first. ASCP Board of Certification routes differ by education and experience, and Florida requires state licensure on top of certification. Ask the department, in writing, which certification route this track prepares you for and what experience it assumes you already hold.
⚠⚠ The C suffix here does not mean what it means elsewhere in Florida
- Across Florida a C suffix normally marks an integrated lecture-plus-laboratory version of a course. In this prefix it marks a separate programme track with different prerequisites and a different intended student.
- ⚠ SCNS offers a small set of course-designation options — no suffix, C, L — and every course has to be filed under one of them. A lecture course carrying virtual laboratory activities is closest to C, so that is the slot it gets. The suffix records a filing decision, not the content.
- ⚠⚠ The same caution applies to the L suffix in this prefix, where MLS4820L–MLS4825L are supervised hospital rotations rather than campus laboratories.
- Read the description, not the suffix. This matters when a transfer evaluator or an employer reads a transcript line and assumes the statewide convention applies.

UWF's catalog publishes a credit value in semester hours, the college and department, prerequisites, co-requisites, fee notices, and a description. - ⚠ An honest note on the work itself. Clinical laboratory scientists are largely invisible to patients and produce the majority of the objective data on which diagnoses are made. The work is shift-based, includes nights and weekends in hospital settings, and carries real consequence — a transfusion or a critical result acted on incorrectly harms someone.
Special Information
⚠⚠ Florida licenses clinical laboratory personnel — and most states do not
- Florida is one of a small number of states that require a state licence to work as clinical laboratory personnel. Licensure is administered by the Florida Department of Health, and a national certification alone is not sufficient to practise in Florida.
- ⚠ This is the single most important regulatory fact for a Florida MLS student, and it cuts both ways: graduates of a Florida programme are prepared for it, while someone certified in a non-licensure state who moves to Florida must obtain the state licence separately.
- The usual national credential is the ASCP Board of Certification MLS credential, earned by examination after completing a programme accredited by NAACLS.
- ⚠⚠ Programmatic accreditation matters more here than institutional accreditation. Eligibility to sit the certification examination generally depends on graduating from a NAACLS-accredited programme — so confirm a programme's current accreditation status directly with NAACLS before enrolling, and be careful about assuming that transferred coursework preserves eligibility.
- Laboratory testing itself is federally regulated under CLIA, which sets personnel requirements by test complexity — the framework within which both licensure and certification sit.
⚠⚠ "Permission is required" — this course is gated on programme admission
- UWF marks this course Permission is required, and the same phrase appears on nearly every course in the MLS prefix. Meeting the listed prerequisites does not make a student eligible to enrol.
- ⚠ In practice this means admission to the Medical Laboratory Sciences programme. Clinical laboratory science programmes are cohort-based and capacity-limited, because laboratory seats and clinical placements are finite — so admission is competitive and separate from admission to the university.
- ⚠⚠ Apply to the programme early and treat its deadlines as the real constraint. A student who completes every science prerequisite and misses the cohort application waits a full year, because a cohort sequence normally starts once a year — and UWF publishes no terms of offering, so this cannot be confirmed from the catalog.
- Contact the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, College of Health, before planning a schedule around these courses.
⚠⚠ The SCNS title and the UWF title differ across the whole track
- This is a systematic naming convention, not a one-off rename. Where SCNS names these courses Clinical X or Advanced X, UWF names them X Professional Track — across every member of the track.
- ⚠ A transfer evaluator matching on title alone will not connect them. "Clinical Hematology" and "Hematology Professional Track" do not look like the same course, and the credit values differ from the standard-track equivalents too.
- Carry a syllabus in either direction, and be explicit that this is a distinct programme route rather than an integrated version of a split pair.
⚠⚠ Virtual laboratory activities — what they do and do not provide
- Virtual laboratories are genuinely good at some things. Interpreting results, applying quality control rules, working through case correlations, and seeing rare findings that a teaching laboratory would never happen to have — all of these work well in software, and a student can repeat a case as often as they like, which a bench cannot offer.
- ⚠⚠ What they cannot provide is psychomotor skill. Pipetting accuracy, reading agglutination strength by eye, streaking for isolation, focusing a microscope on a low-density finding — these are physical skills built only by repetition with real material, and the certification examination and the employer both assume them.
- ⚠ They also cannot provide the conditions. Working accurately under time pressure, with specimens arriving continuously and a clinician on the telephone, is a large part of what a rotation teaches.
- This is why the track pairs virtual activities with a portfolio evidencing real experience — the design assumes the physical skill is already present and does not attempt to teach it.
- ⚠⚠ If you are relying on this track and your bench experience is thin or dated, say so to the department early. It is much easier to arrange supplementary experience before a certification application than after one is refused.
⚠ The standard-track equivalent, for comparison
- The same subject appears in UWF's standard track as MLS4305 Hematology I (3 sh) with MLS4305L Hematology I Lab (1 sh). The content overlaps substantially; what differs is the laboratory component and the intended student — the standard track has physical laboratory work and leads to hospital rotations, while this course carries virtual activities and assumes documented experience instead.
- ⚠ Credit values differ between the two versions, so a transfer evaluator cannot assume equivalence in either direction.
- Only one route applies to you. Confirm which with the department rather than choosing by what fits the timetable.
⚠⚠ Morphology findings that must be acted on immediately
- Blasts in a patient not known to have leukaemia is a critical finding — called, not queued. A new acute leukaemia can deteriorate within hours.
- ⚠⚠ Schistocytes with thrombocytopenia suggest a microangiopathic process such as TTP, which is treatable if recognised and frequently fatal if not. The laboratory is where it is first seen.
- ⚠ Malaria parasites are a critical, time-critical result, and Florida sees imported malaria and has recorded locally acquired cases in recent years.
- Platelet clumping causes a falsely low automated count. The film distinguishes pseudothrombocytopenia from the real thing, and reporting the analyser number without checking the film has led to unnecessary platelet transfusion.
- ⚠ Automated flags are an instruction to look, not a diagnosis. The analyser is telling you it could not resolve something; a person then has to.
⚠⚠ Quality control is the discipline, not a chore attached to it
- A result is worthless without evidence that the method was performing when it was produced. That evidence is quality control, and in clinical laboratory science it is the professional skill rather than an administrative overhead.
- ⚠ Learn Levey-Jennings charts and the Westgard rules properly. They are how a laboratory distinguishes normal analytical variation from a real shift or trend, and they are examined on the ASCP board certification.
- ⚠⚠ The consequence of releasing a result from an out-of-control run is a patient managed on a wrong number. Delta checks, critical value protocols, and result verification exist because that happens and because it harms people.
- Pre-analytical error dominates. Most laboratory errors occur before the specimen reaches the analyser — wrong patient, wrong tube, haemolysis, insufficient volume, wrong order of draw — and the laboratory is frequently blamed for errors that happened at collection.
- Accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity and predictive value are used precisely here, not loosely. Predictive value depends on disease prevalence, which is why the same test performs differently in different populations.
⚠⚠ Bloodborne pathogen exposure is a real occupational risk, and the controls are not optional
- Clinical laboratory work involves human blood and body fluids, which are treated as infectious regardless of the patient's known status. That is Standard Precautions, and it is the organising rule of laboratory practice.
- The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) is law, not guidance — it requires an exposure control plan, personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and hepatitis B vaccination offered at no cost.
- ⚠⚠ Needlestick and sharps injuries are the highest-risk exposure route. Never recap needles by hand, dispose of sharps at the point of use, and report every exposure immediately — post-exposure prophylaxis is time-critical, and the instinct to say nothing is the dangerous one.
- Aerosol generation is the underestimated route. Uncapping tubes, centrifuge accidents, and pipetting all generate aerosols; a centrifuge that is unbalanced or opened too early is a genuine hazard.
- ⚠ Programmes normally require immunisation records, a health screening, and sometimes a background check and drug screen before clinical placement. Start these early — they take longer than students expect and can delay a placement.
- Chemical hazards sit alongside the biological ones, and both belong in the same safety habit.

How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement. ⚠ For clinical laboratory sciences the more important constraint is programmatic rather than numeric: courses are gated on admission to a cohort, sequenced tightly, and tied to NAACLS accreditation and to eligibility for certification — so transferring individual courses between programmes is frequently not possible even where the credit itself articulates.
