Course Description
Laboratory Procedures for Medical Assisting develops an understanding of the various laboratory tests, the departments in a laboratory, the personnel, safety rules, and government regulations, together with the practical ability to perform basic tests, collect blood specimens by various methods, and perform electrocardiograms.

⚠⚠ This is a PSAV clock-hour course — the hours are the requirement
- A 0000-level SCNS number denotes postsecondary adult vocational instruction, measured in clock hours rather than college credits. This course carries zero college credit, and the hour figure is the real measurement.
- Attendance is a completion requirement, not a policy preference. Hours missed are hours owed, and programmes track them because the credential depends on the count rather than on a grade average.
- PSAV credit does not transfer into a degree as general education, and it does not carry the A.A.'s junior-status guarantee. Some Florida colleges award articulated credit toward a related A.S. degree through published articulation agreements — ask specifically and get the answer in writing, because the answer differs by college and by programme.
- Financial aid rules differ for clock-hour programmes. Eligibility, disbursement, and satisfactory progress are calculated differently than for credit programmes; ask the financial aid office rather than assuming.
- The credential is the point, not the transcript. Employers in this field hire on the certificate and the certification examination, and that is what the hours are building toward.
189 hours is roughly a full working month. Budget for it: this course alone is a substantial time commitment, and it runs concurrently with the rest of the programme.
⚠ Florida does not license medical assistants — the credential is what employers require
- Florida has no state licensure or certification requirement for medical assistants. They work under the delegation and supervision of a licensed physician or other licensed practitioner.
- That does not make certification optional in practice. Employers — particularly hospital-affiliated practices and large groups — increasingly require a national credential, and some payers and accreditation bodies effectively require it.
- The recognized credentials are the CMA (AAMA), the RMA (AMT), the CCMA (NHA), and the NCMA (NCCT). The CMA (AAMA) requires graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programme, which makes programme accreditation a decision you must check before enrolling — it cannot be fixed afterwards.
- Ask what your programme's accreditation is and which examinations its graduates are eligible for. Get the answer in writing, and check the certifying body's own eligibility page rather than relying on a brochure.
- Scope is set by delegation, not by your certificate. What you may do is what a licensed practitioner may lawfully delegate and has in fact delegated. A credential does not expand scope, and "I'm certified" is not authority to perform an act the supervising practitioner has not delegated.
- Medical assistants may not diagnose, prescribe, or independently interpret results. When a patient asks what a result means, the answer is a referral to the provider — warmly, and without speculation.
- Rule 11 applies — verify current requirements with the Florida Department of Health, the relevant practice board, and the certifying body directly rather than relying on any course material.
⚠⚠ CLIA defines what you may legally perform — and the insert defines how
- Every laboratory performing testing on human specimens is regulated under CLIA, and a physician office laboratory holds a certificate matching the complexity of what it performs.
- Waived tests are those the FDA has determined are simple with a low risk of error — many urinalysis dipsticks, rapid strep and influenza tests, glucose meters, and similar. The waived list is specific and it changes; check the CMS list rather than assuming.
- Waived does not mean unregulated. Waived testing must follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly, and any deviation moves the test out of waived status — different reagent, modified timing, or an unapproved specimen type all do this.
- Moderate and high complexity testing requires qualified personnel under CLIA, and a medical assistant generally may not perform it. Know which category the tests in your office fall into.
- Quality control is a requirement, not good practice. Run the controls at the required frequency, document them, and do not report patient results when controls are out of range — investigate first. This is exactly what inspections examine.
- Document everything — controls, calibrations, maintenance, reagent lot numbers and expiry dates, and temperatures. Missing documentation is treated as work not done.
- Expired reagents produce invalid results, and checking dates before each run is part of the procedure.
- Critical values must be reported to the provider immediately, documented with the time and the person notified. A critical result sitting in a stack is a patient safety event.
- Rule 11 applies — CLIA categorizations, waived test lists, and Florida clinical laboratory requirements under Chapter 483, F.S. all change. Verify with CMS and the Florida Department of Health.
⚠⚠ Specimen collection: the errors that harm patients
- Patient identification is the most serious error in the process. Use two independent identifiers and ask the patient to state them rather than asking "Are you Mrs Smith?" — a confused, medicated, or hard-of-hearing patient will agree to anything.
- Label at the point of collection, in front of the patient. Pre-labelling tubes and labelling at the desk are both how mislabelling happens, and both are prohibited practice.
- Order of draw prevents additive carryover that can produce clinically misleading results with no visible sign anything went wrong. Memorize it; it is examinable and consequential.
- Fill additive tubes to volume and invert them gently the specified number of times — under-filled coagulation tubes give invalid results, and shaking causes hemolysis.
- Hemolysis is the most common pre-analytical error and it invalidates several tests, potassium among them. Causes are a needle too small, excessive vacuum or syringe pull, prolonged tourniquet time, and vigorous mixing.
- Keep tourniquet time under a minute. Longer produces hemoconcentration and shifts results.
- Two attempts, then get someone else. This is standard practice, and persisting past it is how patients get hurt.
- Sudden shooting pain, tingling, or an electric sensation means stop and withdraw immediately — that is nerve contact, and it is the most serious venipuncture complication. Never probe or redirect blindly.
- Ask about fainting history, and never draw a standing patient. Syncope is common; a fall is a far worse injury than an incomplete draw.
- A recollection is better than a bad specimen. Sending a compromised sample produces a wrong result that someone will act on.
⚠ Needlestick injury: report every exposure, immediately
- Never recap a needle, and activate the safety device at the point of use before your hands go anywhere else.
- Dispose in the sharps container yourself, immediately. Never hand a used sharp to anyone, never set one down, never carry one across a room, and never overfill a container.
- Hepatitis B vaccination is offered at no cost to at-risk employees under the OSHA standard and is highly effective. Get it and confirm your titer.
- Report every exposure immediately. Post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV is time-critical, and the source patient can only be tested through proper procedure. Under-reporting is the norm and it is a serious mistake.
- Know your facility's exposure protocol before you need it — who to call, where to go, what to document.
- Treat every patient as infectious. That is what standard precautions means, and it is the only workable approach since status is frequently unknown.
⚠ Electrocardiography: placement is the whole thing
- Lead placement errors produce tracings that look like disease. Misplaced precordial leads can mimic infarction patterns, and reversed limb leads produce characteristic abnormalities — a physician may act on a bad tracing, which is why this is a patient safety skill and not a technical chore.
- Learn the anatomical landmarks properly — count the intercostal spaces every time rather than estimating. Placement "about there" is not placement.
- Skin preparation determines signal quality. Clean, dry skin, hair removed where necessary, and fresh electrodes with moist gel.
- Recognize artifact and fix its cause rather than repeating the tracing. Muscle tremor from a cold or tense patient, wandering baseline from movement or breathing, and AC interference from nearby equipment each have a specific remedy.
- Patient positioning and comfort matter — a warm, relaxed, supine patient produces a clean tracing.
- Protect dignity. ECG requires chest exposure; drape, explain, and offer a chaperone. This is a common source of patient complaints and is entirely preventable.
- You do not interpret the tracing — that is the provider's role. But you must recognize when something needs attention now, and get the provider immediately rather than filing the tracing.
- Document the tracing correctly — patient identifiers, date, time, and any relevant circumstances. An unlabelled ECG is worthless.
⚠ HIPAA is a daily obligation in a medical office, not a training module
- Access only what your work requires. Looking up a family member, a neighbour, a colleague, or a public figure is a terminable offence and a HIPAA violation, and electronic record access is logged and audited. People are dismissed for this regularly.
- The front desk is the hardest place to protect privacy. Sign-in sheets, screens visible from the waiting area, telephone conversations overheard, and discussing a patient at the counter are the everyday risks.
- Verify before you disclose. Confirm identity before releasing information by telephone, and know your office's policy on family members — a spouse or adult child has no automatic right to information.
- Minimum necessary governs use and disclosure: share what is needed for the purpose, not everything you have.
- Authorization is required for most disclosures outside treatment, payment, and operations, and certain categories — mental health notes, substance use treatment records, and HIV-related information among them — carry additional protection under federal or Florida law.
- Report a breach immediately. A misdirected fax or an email to the wrong address reported promptly is a manageable incident; one concealed is a serious matter.
- Treat classroom sample records as real. The habits you build now are the ones you will have under pressure.
How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
MEA0256C is a 189 clock-hour PSAV course carrying zero college credit, with a $75 lab fee, offered spring. Expect skills competency assessment against procedure checklists rather than examinations alone — you will be observed performing venipuncture, waived testing, and ECG to a defined standard.
Use every hour of open lab you can get. These are psychomotor skills, they are built only by repetition, and the students who practise are visibly more confident with real patients during the externship that follows.
