Clinical Procedures for Medical Assisting and Lab develops the hands-on clinical competencies of the medical assisting role: infection control and pathogen transmission, emergency response fundamentals, equipment maintenance, vital signs measurement, patient preparation, assisting with procedures, quality assurance, medication documentation, and clinical note-taking.

⚠ Medical assistants are not licensed in Florida — and that cuts both ways
The scope-of-practice fact every Florida medical assisting student needs, because it is genuinely different from most clinical roles and it is widely misunderstood.
Florida does not license or certify medical assistants. There is no state licence, no state scope of practice statute defining the role, and no state examination. What governs your practice instead is delegation: a medical assistant performs tasks delegated by and under the supervision of a licensed practitioner — a physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse — who remains responsible for the delegated act.
What follows from that, concretely:
- Your employer's policies and the delegating practitioner define what you may do, within the limits of what that practitioner may lawfully delegate under their own practice act. The boundaries can therefore differ between two offices in the same town.
- Delegation is not unlimited. A practitioner cannot delegate acts requiring the exercise of independent professional judgement, and cannot delegate what falls under another profession's licensure — nursing acts are governed by the Nurse Practice Act, and a medical assistant is not a nurse.
- Never represent yourself as a nurse. Using the title, or allowing a patient to assume it, is a serious problem in Florida as in every state.
- "I was told to" is a weak defence. You remain accountable for performing competently and for refusing tasks you are not trained to perform. Saying "I have not been trained on that" is professional, not insubordinate.
- Certification matters because licensure does not. With no state credential, employers rely on the national certifications — CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA), and NCMA (NCCT) — and many Florida employers now require one. Eligibility for the CMA in particular depends on graduating from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programme, so check your programme's accreditation before enrolling if that credential matters to you.
Rule 11 applies. Delegation rules, and the specific tasks practitioners may delegate, are set in Florida statute and board rule and have been amended. Verify with the Florida Department of Health and the relevant practice act rather than relying on custom in any one office.
⚠ Vital signs are the measurements physicians act on — the technique errors are specific and common
The most important technical content in the course, because these numbers become clinical decisions.
A blood pressure you record may lead to a prescription. Measurement error is not a grading matter; it is a patient care matter, and the errors are well documented and entirely preventable:
- Cuff size is the largest single source of error. A cuff too small reads falsely high, a cuff too large reads falsely low, and the effect can be large enough to change management. Measure the arm; do not estimate by looking.
- Position matters. The patient should be seated with back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed, and the arm supported at heart level. An unsupported arm, dangling feet, or crossed legs each shift the reading measurably.
- Let them rest. A patient who has just walked in, climbed stairs, or been rushed needs a few minutes seated quietly before measurement.
- Talking raises blood pressure — both the patient's and yours. Take the reading in silence.
- Do not round to comfortable numbers. Digit preference toward zeros and fives is a documented, measurable bias in clinical measurement.
- Count respirations without announcing it, because a patient aware of being watched changes their breathing.
- Recheck an abnormal value before recording it, and report significant abnormalities immediately rather than charting them and moving on. A critically high or low value is an event, not a data point.
The professional habit that matters most: record what you measured, not what you expected. A reading that seems implausible should be repeated and investigated, never adjusted.
⚠ Infection control protects you, and the highest-risk moment is the sharps handling
The safety content, and the exposure that most often injures clinical staff.
- Never recap a needle. Recapping is the classic mechanism of needlestick injury, and the one-handed scoop technique is a fallback for the rare situations where recapping is unavoidable — not a routine practice.
- Dispose of sharps immediately, yourself, at the point of use. Do not hand a used sharp to anyone, do not set it down, and do not overfill a container.
- Safety-engineered devices are required where available under the bloodborne pathogens standard, and their safety features must actually be activated.
- Know the exposure protocol before you need it. Wash the area, report immediately, and seek evaluation — post-exposure prophylaxis is time-critical, and delay reduces its effectiveness. Under-reporting of needlesticks is a documented, serious problem, and the reasons — embarrassment, not wanting to disrupt the clinic — are exactly the wrong ones.
- Hepatitis B vaccination must be offered to employees with occupational exposure at no cost under the OSHA standard.
- Hand hygiene is the single most effective control, and compliance in real clinical settings is measurably poor. Before and after every patient contact, before gloving and after removing gloves — gloves are not a substitute for hand hygiene.
- Aseptic technique fails silently. Nobody sees you contaminate a sterile field, the patient does not develop an infection for days, and it will never be traced to the moment. That is precisely why the discipline has to be internal.
⚠ Documentation and privacy: what you write and what you say
- Chart contemporaneously and factually. Record what you observed and what you did, in objective terms. "Patient states pain is 7 of 10" is documentation; "patient seems dramatic" is not.
- Never chart in advance, and never chart something you did not personally do.
- Corrections are made properly — a single line through an error, initialled and dated, or the electronic record's amendment function. Obscuring an entry is a serious integrity problem.
- Document medications accurately, including what was administered, by whom, when, the route, the site, and the lot number where required. Vaccine documentation carries specific requirements.
- HIPAA applies to conversation, not just records. Hallway discussions, front-desk conversations audible in the waiting room, and screens visible to patients are the everyday breaches.
- Do not look up records you have no work reason to see — including your own family's. Access is audited, and curiosity-driven access is a firing offence and a reportable breach.
- Social media is where careers end. Posting anything about a patient, including details that seem unidentifiable, has ended jobs and generated licensure actions across healthcare.
⚠ Programme accreditation determines which certification you can sit
Practical planning information that is easiest to act on before enrolling and hardest to fix afterwards.
Because Florida does not license medical assistants, national certification is what employers use to distinguish candidates — and eligibility rules differ by credential:
- The CMA (AAMA) is generally regarded as the strongest credential and requires graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programme. If you want that credential, programme accreditation is not optional.
- The RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA), and NCMA (NCCT) have broader eligibility routes, including work experience pathways in some cases, and are widely accepted by employers.
- Ask directly whether your programme is accredited and by whom, before enrolling. Programmes are not always forthcoming, and the answer changes what your credential options are.
- Certification requires renewal through continuing education or re-examination; note the interval when you certify.
- A PSAV certificate is not a degree. If you may later want an A.S. or a nursing pathway, ask about articulation early — see the note below.

The 0-level SCNS number identifies this as postsecondary adult vocational coursework, measured in clock hours with zero college credit. PSAV coursework does not transfer into a college-credit programme the way a 1000- or 2000-level course does. What exists instead is articulation, awarded where it exists for completing an entire programme or occupational completion point rather than for individual courses, and never automatically. Get a written evaluation from the receiving institution before assuming.

How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
