Course Description

MAN4583 – Project Management is a 3-credit, 45-contact-hour upper-division course covering the discipline of delivering defined work within constraints of scope, time, cost, and quality. It is a common requirement or elective in business, information technology, engineering technology, and applied management programs.

Projects are distinguished from ongoing operations by being temporary and producing a unique result, and that distinction drives everything else. Operations can be optimized over time; a project has to be planned before anyone knows exactly what they are doing, executed while the estimate is still wrong, and closed whether or not it went to plan.

The course is typically organized around the project lifecycle: initiation — defining scope, identifying stakeholders, and building the business case; planning — the work breakdown structure, scheduling, resource assignment, budgeting, and risk planning; execution — leading the team and managing stakeholders; monitoring and controlling — measuring progress, managing change, and corrective action; and closing.
