MAN4520 – Quality Management is a 3-credit upper-division course surveying the quality movement and the methods organizations use to define, measure, and improve the quality of what they produce. They share substantial method — Deming, variation, PDSA, statistical process control, Lean and Six Sigma — but differ in what the methods are applied to and in the regulatory environment assumed. The management implication is uncomfortable and important: much of what looks like responsive management — investigating every downtick, rewarding every uptick, ranking employees on outcomes largely determined by the system — actively degrades performance. This is one of the few places where a management course delivers a finding that contradicts widespread practice.
