Course Description
Kitchen and Bath Design II covers foundational advanced kitchen design principles, emphasising industry-standard guidelines. Students complete kitchen and bath design projects using an industry-standard CAD program, with instruction grounded in National Kitchen and Bath Association standards.

- NKBA planning guidelines exist because kitchens that violate them are uncomfortable, inefficient, or unsafe to use, and the dimensions come from how people actually move and work.
- Walkway and work aisle widths differ, and a work aisle must accommodate a person working while another passes — an aisle that is adequate empty is not adequate with a dishwasher door open.
- Check clearances with doors and drawers open, not closed. This is the most common failure in a student design and it is obvious once built.
- Landing areas beside appliances and sinks are safety features — somewhere to set a hot pan down. A cooktop with no adjacent counter is a burn waiting to happen.
- Do not place a cooktop under a window or where a person must reach across it, and mind the swing of every door in the room.
- Plan the work zones around what the client actually does, rather than applying a formula — a household that bakes, or cooks together, or eats in the kitchen has different requirements.
- Bathrooms have their own clearances, and fixture spacing is both a comfort and a code matter.
- ⚠ Universal design is not only for disability. Wider doorways, better lighting, comfortable reach ranges, and lever handles benefit everyone and are increasingly expected — and in Florida's demographic, ageing-in-place design is a substantial and growing market.
- Verify every clearance on the drawing before presenting it. Correcting a violation after cabinetry is ordered is not possible.
⚠ Design for the client in front of you, and be honest about cost
- Interview properly before designing. How they cook, who cooks, how they store things, what frustrates them about the current room, who else uses it, and how long they intend to stay.
- Watch for the unstated requirement. Clients describe what they think they want; the useful information is usually in what they say about their current kitchen.
- Establish the budget early and honestly. Designing something the client cannot afford wastes everyone's time and damages the relationship — and kitchens are consistently more expensive than clients expect.
- Show where the money goes. Cabinetry, appliances, countertops, and labour in proportion, so the client can make informed trade-offs.
- Present options rather than a single answer, with the consequences of each.
- Be honest about what will not work, and say why, with the constraint named — structure, drainage, code, or budget.
- Document selections precisely. Model numbers, finishes, and dimensions — a specification that says "chrome tap" will produce an argument.
- Manage expectations about timescale and disruption, which for a kitchen renovation are substantial.
⚠⚠ Interior design decisions are life-safety decisions in commercial space
- The distinction between decoration and design is code compliance, and it is the reason the field is regulated at all.
- Egress governs. Exit access, travel distance, corridor and door widths, and the arrangement of furniture and partitions all affect whether people can leave a building in an emergency — and a layout that blocks or lengthens egress is a defect, not a style choice.
- Finish materials have fire ratings. Flame spread and smoke development classifications apply to wall and ceiling finishes, and what is permitted differs by occupancy and by location within the building — corridors and exit stairs are the most restricted.
- Specify tested and documented materials. A finish without a documented rating cannot be approved where one is required, and "it looks similar" is not a substitute.
- Accessibility is a legal requirement, not a courtesy. The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Florida Accessibility Code govern clearances, reach ranges, turning space, door hardware, and toilet room layout — and these constrain design more than any aesthetic consideration.
- Occupancy classification drives the requirements, and a change of use can trigger substantial upgrade obligations.
- Sprinklers, alarms, lighting, and signage interact with layout, and coordination with other disciplines is part of the work.

⚠⚠ Interior design is regulated in Florida — establish what you may practise before you plan a career
- Florida is one of a minority of states that regulates interior design, and it does so under Chapter 481, Part I, Florida Statutes — the same chapter that governs architecture — through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Board of Architecture and Interior Design.
- ⚠ The regulation distinguishes residential from non-residential work. Florida provides for registered interior designers and for licensure, and what a person may lawfully do — particularly in commercial and other non-residential interiors, and particularly where drawings are submitted for permit — depends on that status.
- This matters enormously for career planning and students frequently do not discover it until late. Establish early what you will and will not be permitted to practise, and what the pathway to registration involves.
- Registration typically requires a combination of education, documented experience, and examination — the NCIDQ examination is the recognised qualifying examination in this field.

How Florida course levels affect transfer
The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
