Course Description

Materials and Estimating for Kitchen and Bath focuses on construction fundamentals and systems relevant to kitchen and bath design. Students study foundation to roof construction, wiring, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, building codes, foundations and floor systems, building materials and project estimating.

Within the SCNS taxonomy, IND is the Interior Design prefix. Daytona State publishes this at 3 credits with a $15.00 lab fee, offered summer, giving approximately 45 contact hours at the prefix's lecture convention.

This is the course that keeps kitchen and bath designers out of trouble. These are the two rooms where design meets structure, plumbing, electrical supply, and ventilation simultaneously — and a designer who does not understand what is behind the wall will specify things that cannot be built, or can only be built at a cost nobody budgeted. Moving a sink, relocating a range, or removing a wall are all decisions with consequences the drawing does not show.

Daytona State does not publish a lecture and laboratory split for its IND courses. The prefix runs at three conventions: studio courses at 30 contact hours per credit (IND1233C and IND2210C at 3 credits and 90 hours), graphics, software, and applied courses at 20 (IND1300, IND1429C and IND2410C at 3 credits and 60 hours), and lecture courses at 15 (IND2220 and IND2500 at 3 credits and 45 hours). This course is lecture-based and is priced at the lecture convention.

Special Information

⚠⚠ What is behind the wall determines what the design can cost

• The single most expensive design decision in a kitchen or bathroom is moving plumbing, and it is the one clients least expect to be costly.
• Drainage constrains far more than supply. Water can be run almost anywhere; waste must fall, at a required slope, to an existing stack — and where the floor structure runs the wrong way, it may not be possible at all without major work.
• Venting is the constraint people forget. Every fixture needs it, and relocating a fixture frequently means new venting through the structure.
• Concrete slab construction changes everything, and a great deal of Florida housing is slab-on-grade — relocating drainage means cutting and repouring the slab, which is expensive and disruptive.
• Kitchens and bathrooms have specific electrical requirements, including dedicated circuits and ground-fault protection, and older houses frequently do not have the capacity a new design assumes.
• Exhaust ventilation is required and it must go somewhere — ducting a range hood or bathroom fan to the exterior can be genuinely difficult depending on the location.
• ⚠ Identify load-bearing walls before proposing removal. Removing one requires structural design, and "we'll just take that wall out" is where budgets are destroyed.
• Look before you design. Open a cabinet, look under a sink, check the panel, look in the attic or crawl space — fifteen minutes of investigation prevents an unbuildable design.
• Say what you do not know, and recommend a contractor or engineer assessment where the design depends on it.

⚠ Estimate honestly, and put the contingency in writing

• Renovation estimates are wrong more often than new-build estimates, because you cannot see what is behind the finishes until they come off.
• Include a contingency and say so explicitly. Hiding it inside the number means the first surprise looks like an overrun.
• Take off quantities systematically and in a form someone else could check.
• Price installation, not only materials. Labour is frequently the larger half, and it is where inexperienced estimates fall short.
• Account for demolition, disposal, and making good — routinely omitted and never free.
• ⚠ Expect surprises in older Florida housing — water damage, unpermitted previous work, undersized electrical service, and corroded plumbing are common.
• Document scope precisely so that what is included and excluded is unambiguous before work starts.
• Manage change orders formally, in writing, priced before the work is done.
• Be honest early about cost. A client told the real number at concept stage can make choices; one told at the end feels misled.

⚠⚠ Interior design decisions are life-safety decisions in commercial space

• The distinction between decoration and design is code compliance, and it is the reason the field is regulated at all.
• Egress governs. Exit access, travel distance, corridor and door widths, and the arrangement of furniture and partitions all affect whether people can leave a building in an emergency — and a layout that blocks or lengthens egress is a defect, not a style choice.
• Finish materials have fire ratings. Flame spread and smoke development classifications apply to wall and ceiling finishes, and what is permitted differs by occupancy and by location within the building — corridors and exit stairs are the most restricted.
• Specify tested and documented materials. A finish without a documented rating cannot be approved where one is required, and "it looks similar" is not a substitute.
• Accessibility is a legal requirement, not a courtesy. The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Florida Accessibility Code govern clearances, reach ranges, turning space, door hardware, and toilet room layout — and these constrain design more than any aesthetic consideration.
• Occupancy classification drives the requirements, and a change of use can trigger substantial upgrade obligations.
• Sprinklers, alarms, lighting, and signage interact with layout, and coordination with other disciplines is part of the work.
• ⚠ Florida's building code includes wind and, in coastal areas, flood requirements that affect interior work more than designers expect.
• ⚠ Rule 11 applies — codes are adopted on a cycle and amended locally; verify the adopted edition with the authority having jurisdiction.

⚠⚠ Interior design is regulated in Florida — establish what you may practise before you plan a career

• Florida is one of a minority of states that regulates interior design, and it does so under Chapter 481, Part I, Florida Statutes — the same chapter that governs architecture — through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Board of Architecture and Interior Design.
• ⚠ The regulation distinguishes residential from non-residential work. Florida provides for registered interior designers and for licensure, and what a person may lawfully do — particularly in commercial and other non-residential interiors, and particularly where drawings are submitted for permit — depends on that status.
• This matters enormously for career planning and students frequently do not discover it until late. Establish early what you will and will not be permitted to practise, and what the pathway to registration involves.
• Registration typically requires a combination of education, documented experience, and examination — the NCIDQ examination is the recognised qualifying examination in this field.
• Education requirements frequently reference programme accreditation, and CIDA is the accrediting body for interior design programmes. ⚠ Check a programme's accreditation status against the requirements before enrolling — this is the same trap recorded elsewhere in this repository for allied health, and it is equally unrecoverable after the fact.
• An associate degree may not by itself satisfy the education requirement for registration; plan the full pathway if registration is the goal.
• Working under a licensed or registered professional is how most people begin, and it is how the required experience is accumulated.
• ⚠ Rule 11 applies emphatically. Titles, scopes of practice, education and experience requirements, and examination rules all change, and this is a contested area of regulation in several states. Verify current requirements with DBPR and the Board rather than relying on any course guide, including this one.

How Florida course levels affect transfer

The first digit of an SCNS number denotes the year of offering, not transferability. Courses at the 1000 and 2000 levels transfer transparently between Florida public institutions, and 3000 to 4000 is unproblematic since both are upper division. The boundary that actually matters is 2000 to 3000, where lower-division credit generally cannot satisfy an upper-division requirement.
